Contact dermatitis treated with new topical products: a case study.

Contact dermatitis, an inflammatory response of the skin to an irritant or an allergen, can affect hospital staff. Most clinicians are routinely exposed to irritants such as latex, detergents, and chemicals. Treatment with topical corticosteroids and avoidance of suspect irritants usually resolves the dermatitis. A case study is presented of a licensed practical nurse who developed persistent contact dermatitis. The dermatitis did not resolve with 15 months of traditional treatments. Only after 3 months of treatment with two investigational topical products, which are now available to the publ

A randomised investigation of film-forming silicone gel in superficial partial thickness face and neck burn patients: Indication of improved early scar pigmentation outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: Burns to the face and neck are a source of considerable distress and a challenge to manage with dressings. Further, these often superficial injuries pose a risk of scarring and altered pigmentation. Silicone gels have emerged as a potential solution to the challenges of conservative management for face and neck burn injuries. The aims of this study were to explore the effect of topical silicone compared to routine treatment of conservatively managed burns to the face and neck. METHODS: This single-blind, randomised, controlled trial compared topical silicone film-forming dressin

The role of high molecular weight hyaluronic acid in mucoadhesion on an ocular surface model.

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is frequently formulated in eye drops to improve the stability of the tear film by hydration and lubrication. Mucoadhesion is related to the ocular residence time and therefore to the effectiveness of the eye drops. The ocular residence time of the HA formulation is correlated with the ability of HA to create specific strong interactions in the ocular surface with the mucus layer, mainly composed of a mixture of secreted mucins (MUC; gel forming MUC5AC and MUC2) and shed membrane-bound soluble mucins (MUC1, MUC4, and MUC16). Dry eye disease (DED) is a multifactorial pathol

An algorithm for diagnosing IgE-mediated food allergy in study participants who do not undergo food challenge.

BACKGROUND: Food allergy diagnosis in clinical studies can be challenging. Oral food challenges (OFC) are time-consuming, carry some risk and may, therefore, not be acceptable to all study participants. OBJECTIVE: To design and evaluate an algorithm for detecting IgE-mediated food allergy in clinical study participants who do not undergo OFC. METHODS: An algorithm for trial participants in the Barrier Enhancement for Eczema Prevention (BEEP) study who were unwilling or unable to attend OFC was developed. BEEP is a pragmatic, multi-centre, randomized-controlled trial of daily emollient for th

Dermatologic Toxicity Occurring During Anti-EGFR Monoclonal Inhibitor Therapy in Patients With Metastatic Colorectal Cancer: A Systematic Review.

Monoclonal antibody inhibitors of the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) have been shown to improve outcomes for patients with metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) without RAS gene mutations. However, treatment with anti-EGFR agents can be associated with toxicities of the skin, nails, hair, and eyes. Because these dermatologic toxicities can result in treatment discontinuation and affect patient quality of life, their management is an important focus when administering anti-EGFR monoclonal antibodies. The present systematic review describes the current data reporting the nature and incide

[Diagnostic, prophylactic and therapeutic guidelines in patients with atopic dermatitis. Position paper by the task force of the National Specialists on Dermatology, Venereology and Allergology].

Treatment modalities of patients with atopic dermatitis (AD) are dependent on patient age, on the intensity of both skin symptoms and subjective signs of the disease i.e. itch and sleep disturbances, on the body surface involved with lesions, as well as on the type of sensitizing allergens. The characteristic of these allergens is crucial to start prophylaxis and to make decision about specific immunotherapy. In asymptomatic period of the disease the most important factor is to prevent dryness of the skin using emollients, which reconstruct integrity and continuity of stratum corneum. This pro

Evaluation of aloe vera gel gloves in the treatment of dry skin associated with occupational exposure.

OBJECTIVE: An examination glove that delivers aloe vera (AV) gel to the gloved hand was studied in 30 adult females with bilateral occupational dry skin with or without irritant contact dermatitis (with or without erythema, fissures, and excoriations). METHODS: All participants were factory assembly-line workers with repeated superficial skin trauma who attributed their dry, irritated, emollient-dependent skin to a common cause (occupational exposure). Participants were sequentially enrolled (after written informed consent, n = 29 evaluable participants) into an open, contralateral comparison

Sanhuang Fukang oil alleviates X-ray-induced skin injury by reducing inflammation and apoptosis: an in vivo study.

BACKGROUND: Radiation dermatitis is a significant dose-limiting toxicity of radiotherapy that compromises treatment efficacy and patient quality of life. Although topical anti-inflammatory agents and emollients provide symptomatic relief, they fail to address the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms. SHFKO, a botanical extract with documented antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, has been used in traditional medicine but its molecular mechanisms of action remain poorly characterized. This study systematically investigated the therapeutic potential of SHFKO in mitigating radiation-i

Granular parakeratosis associated with the use of laundry sanitizers containing benzalkonium chloride: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Granular parakeratosis (GP) is a rare benign inflammatory dermatosis that preferentially involves the axillae and other intertriginous, friction-prone skin sites and typically presents with pruritic erythema and scaling. Cases associated with benzalkonium chloride (BAC) exposure have rarely been systematically summarized, and further clinical evidence is needed. Herein, we report a case of generalized GP potentially associated with long-term exposure to a BAC-containing laundry sanitizer, with the aim of expanding the clinical spectrum of cutaneous adverse reactions associated with

A rare incidence of severe dermatological toxicities triggered by concomitant administration of all-trans retinoic acid and triazole antifungal in patients with acute promyelocytic leukemia: a case series and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: All-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) is an indispensable part of the treatment of acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL). Although, mild cutaneous toxicities like mucocutaneous xerosis, rash, and pruritus are well reported, ATRA associated severe dermatological toxicities are extremely rare. ATRA is primary metabolized by cytochrome P450 (CYP450) enzyme system, and triazole antifungals are notorious for their strong inhibitory effect on CYP450. CASE PRESENTATION: Three Asian APL patients experienced rare ATRA-induced severe dermatological toxicities: exfoliative dermatitis (ED) in cases 1 a

A multi-centre, parallel group superiority trial of silk therapeutic clothing compared to standard care for the management of eczema in children (CLOTHES Trial): study protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Eczema is a chronic, itchy skin condition that can have a large impact on the quality of life of patients and their families. People with eczema are often keen to try out non-pharmacological therapies like silk therapeutic garments that could reduce itching or the damage caused by scratching. However, the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of these garments in the management of eczema has yet to be proven. The CLOTHES Trial will test the hypothesis that 'silk therapeutic garments plus standard eczema care' is superior to 'standard care alone' for children with moderate to severe

Topical 0.5% ivermectin lotion for treatment of head lice.

BACKGROUND: The emergence of resistance to treatment complicates the public health problem of head-louse infestations and drives the need for continuing development of new treatments. There are limited data on the activity of ivermectin as a topical lousicide. METHODS: In two multisite, randomized, double-blind studies, we compared a single application of 0.5% ivermectin lotion with vehicle control for the elimination of infestations without nit combing in patients 6 months of age or older. A tube of topical ivermectin or vehicle control was dispensed on day 1, to be applied to dry hair, left

Reporting of concomitant and rescue topical therapies in randomized controlled trials evaluating a systemic treatment in atopic dermatitis: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) evaluating new systemic treatments for atopic dermatitis (AD) have increased dramatically over the last decade. These trials often incorporate topical therapies either as permitted concomitant or rescue treatments. Differential use of these topicals postrandomization introduces potential bias as they may nullify or exaggerate treatment responses. OBJECTIVES: To determine the proportion of RCTs that clearly report the allowance or prohibition of concomitant and rescue topical treatments; and to examine the reporting of specific key parameters for
