Infective endocarditis (IE) is a serious bacterial infection of the endocardium and/or heart valves that carries considerable morbidity and mortality. Often presenting with very non-specific symptoms, this disease presents many challenges to the emergency medicine practitioner. A 47-year-old male with no pertinent medical history presented to the emergency department complaining of shortness of breath. He stated that his symptoms had been persistent for the last three weeks and were associated with malaise and fatigue. CT of the abdomen/pelvis with IV contrast revealed a 7-cm hypodensity of th

From 2006 to 2009, crown gall and hairy root symptoms were observed on blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum cvs. O'Neil, Millennia, and Misty) plants from six nurseries in Tucumán, Concordia, Pilar, Morón, and Baradero, Argentina. Bacteria were isolated from galls of all three cultivars and from hairy roots of Millenia and O'Neil onto D1 and D1M agar media at 27°C. Typical Agrobacterium colonies developed in 5 days (2). Seven bacterial strains (five from galls and two from hairy roots) were studied further. All were gram negative, aerobic, and catalase positive with rod-shaped cells that synthesize

UNLABELLED: Listeria monocytogenes, a rod-shaped Gram-positive bacterium widely distributed in nature, can contaminate foods and represents a foodborne pathogen of public health significance causing a high mortality rate of 20%-30%. Rapid and reliable identification of foods and food-processing environments contaminated with L. monocytogenes is a crucial step in implementing effective intervention strategies to ensure food safety and limit the transmission of bacteria to humans. This study designed and refined a practical workflow to streamline and accelerate the detection of a low level of L.

UNLABELLED: Dermabacter hominis, a short gram-positive rod, is a part of the human skin flora, but can also cause infections (e.g., skin and soft tissue infections, bone and joint infections, abscesses, peritoneal dialysis-associated peritonitis, and bacteremia). Only limited data are available for antimicrobial resistance rates. Although CLSI does include coryneform genera in Corynebacterium spp. clinical breakpoints, they point out that only limited data are available on resistance rates. The aim of this study was to assess the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of clinical isolates of D

During May of 2008 (austral autumn), an uncharacterized disease was observed on Dieffenbachia picta (Lodd.) Schott and Aglaonema commutatum Schott in commercial greenhouses in Pontevedra (34°45'6″S, 58°42'42″W), Argentina. Affected plants showed irregular, brown lesions on leaves, approximately 15 to 20 mm in diameter, surrounded by water-soaked haloes that progressed inward from the margins. Water-soaked rotting symptoms were also observed in petioles. Disease incidence approached 80%. Abundant bacterial streaming was observed from lesions when examined at ×100. Bacteria consistently isolated

In June 1998, during a cool, humid period, typical bacterial spot symptoms were observed on basil plantlets (Ocimun basilicum L. 'Royal Louis' and 'Zaes') in a commercial greenhouse in La Plata, Argentina. Affected plants had dark brown to black lesions on cotyledons. Spots on leaves were first water soaked, then became necrotic and progressed inward from the margins. Disease incidence approached 30%. Symptoms were similar to those reported by Little et al. (2) on basil affected by Pseudomonas viridiflava. No pathogenic fungi or viruses were associated with symptomatic plants. Bacterial stream

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: 1. Foot infections in patients with diabetes cause substantial morbidity and frequent visits to health care professionals and may lead to amputation of a lower extremity. 2. Diabetic foot infections require attention to local (foot) and systemic (metabolic) issues and coordinated management, preferably by a multidisciplinary foot-care team (A-II). The team managing these infections should include, or have ready access to, an infectious diseases specialist or a medical microbiologist (B-II). 3. The major predisposing factor to these infections is foot ulceration, which is usu

UNLABELLED: Salmonella are Gram-negative, rod-shaped, entero-invasive foodborne bacteria and are frequently detected in chicken houses and facilities of poultry broiler complexes. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence, critical entry points, and movement pattern of Salmonella along different stages of a complex. A total of 1,071 environmental samples were collected from 38 production houses (8 pullet, 10 breeder, and 20 broiler), a hatchery, 6 transport trucks, and a processing plant. Samples were screened with 3M Molecular Detection System and were further processed for

BackgroundRising antimicrobial resistance rates may impact the efficacy of empirical antibiotic treatment for febrile neutropenia in high-risk cancer patients. Lacking contemporary data about the epidemiology, antibiotic resistance patterns, and clinical outcomes from bloodstream infections (BSIs) in US cancer patients, it is unclear if current guidelines remain relevant.MethodsIn a cross-sectional study, 14 US cancer centers prospectively identified BSIs in high-risk febrile neutropenic (FN) patients, including those receiving chemotherapy for hematologic malignancies or hematopoietic stem ce

Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) is one of the most frequent opportunistic microorganisms causing infections in oncological patients, especially those with neutropenia. Through its ability to adapt to difficult environmental conditions and high intrinsic resistance to antibiotics, it successfully adapts and survives in the hospital environment, causing sporadic infections and outbreaks. It produces a variety of virulence factors that damage host cells, evade host immune responses, and permit colonization and infections of hospitalized patients, who usually develop blood stream, respirato

IntroductionFebrile neutropenia (FN) is a major cause of mortality and morbidity in patients with malignancy post-chmotherapy. Current guidelines for managing FN recommend starting empiric antibiotic therapy (EAT) promptly. The choice of antibiotic is based on the patient's condition, local data on common microorganisms isolated, and their resistance patterns. Of note, there is a growing trend of isolating multi-drug-resistant gram-negative bacteria in these patients. In sub-Saharan Africa, there are insufficient data on the mortality rates of FN. There is also a lack of local epidemiologic da

Elizabethkingia meningosepticum (E. meningosepticum) is a ubiquitous microorganism previously known as Chryseobacterium meningosepticum. It is emerging as a pathogen responsible for bacteremia in the immunocompromised population, particularly in cancer patients and those with a history of prolonged hospital stay and frequent instrumentations. A retrospective chart review of all cases over 10 years at the Moffitt Cancer Center showed a total of three patients with E. meningosepticum infection. The first patient (history of multiple myeloma) underwent endoscopy complicated by aspiration pneumoni

BackgroundWe performed a prospective observational cohort study to evaluate the causative bacteria and to identify risk factors for mortality in febrile neutropenic (FN) patients with blood stream infection (BSI).Material/methodsWe conducted a prospective data collection on all patients with bacteremia or fungemia. The patients were assigned into low-risk and high-risk groups in accordance with the Multinational Association for Supportive Care in Cancer (MASCC) Risk Index.ResultsThroughout the study period, the patients developed 420 FN episodes. Out of 420 episodes, only 90 (21.4%) were found

BACKGROUND: Sphingobacterium multivorum is a gram-negative, non-fermentative, oxidase-positive, catalase-positive bacillus. S multivorum has been identified in urinary tract infections, respiratory tract infections, spontaneous peritonitis, septic arthritis, meningitis, bacteraemia and septic shock. Ours is the second case of skin and soft tissue infection sustained by S. multivorum (a case of necrotizing fasciitis with septic shock has been previously reported). In this paper, we furnish a review of the literature on all the cases of S multivorum described in the medical literature (with the

Diagnosis of infections in cancer patients is usually problematic since differentiating between infection and fever of unknown origin is often a considerable clinical challenge. In general, increase concentration of blood procalcitonin (PCT) is associated with severe bacterial infection. PCT with an optimal cutoff level of 0.5 ng/mL seems to be the most helpful biochemical parameter in detecting severe infections, mainly bloodstream infection, in patients with hematological cancers. In all clinical situations, the elevated level of PCT should be carefully analyzed, always with a thorough physi
