Extracorporeal shockwave therapy shows a number of treatment related chondroprotective effect in osteoarthritis of the knee in rats.

BACKGROUND: Extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) shows chondroprotective effect in osteoarthritis of the rat knees. However, the ideal number of ESWT is unknown. This study investigated the effects of different numbers of ESWT in osteoarthritis of the knee in rats. METHODS: Forty-five male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into five groups. Group I underwent sham arthrotomy without anterior cruciate ligament transection (ACLT) or medial meniscectomy (MM) and received no ESWT. Group II underwent ACLT + MM and received no ESWT. Group III underwent ACLT + MM, and received ESWT once a week for

Early Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction Is Associated With Decreased Risk of Osteoarthritis Compared With Delayed Reconstruction: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries are common, and ACL reconstruction (ACLR) restores stability and enables return to sport. To date, however, studies have failed to show that ACLR prevents long-term osteoarthritis, but the role of timing of ACLR in osteoarthritis has not been extensively examined in meta-analyses. PURPOSE: To compare the risk of long-term osteoarthritis after early versus delayed ACLR in the literature. STUDY DESIGN: Systematic review and meta-analysis; Level of evidence, 4. METHODS: The PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases were searched from 2

Meniscal Root Repair With Centralization.

BACKGROUND: Meniscal root tears compromise hoop stress resistance and lead to elevated tibiofemoral contact pressures, meniscal extrusion, and rapid progression of osteoarthritis. Prompt diagnosis and intervention are essential to prevent further degenerative changes. INDICATIONS: Meniscal root repair is indicated in patients with acute traumatic tears or chronic symptomatic root tears without advanced arthritis. Root repair has been shown to be beneficial regardless of the patient's age, even in the setting of early arthritis. Contraindications to root repair are severe osteoarthritis or poo

Using in vivo calcium imaging to examine joint neuron spontaneous activity and home cage analysis to monitor activity changes in mouse models of arthritis.

BACKGROUND: Studying pain in rodent models of arthritis is challenging. For example, assessing functional changes in joint neurons is challenging due to their relative scarcity amongst all sensory neurons. Additionally, studying pain behaviors in rodent models of arthritis poses its own set of difficulties. Commonly used tests, such as static weight-bearing, often require restraint, which can induce stress and consequently alter nociception. The aim of this study was to evaluate two emerging techniques for investigating joint pain in mouse models of rheumatoid- and osteo-arthritis: In vivo cal

Diagnosis and Treatment Strategies of Meniscus Root Tears: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Meniscus root tears comprise 10% to 21% of all meniscal tears. These tears alter knee biomechanics, elevating contact pressure, akin to a meniscectomy. Consequently, they are linked to advanced joint degeneration and cartilage damage in the affected compartment. PURPOSE: To systematically evaluate and relate the current literature describing the diagnosis and treatment strategies for meniscus root tears. STUDY DESIGN: Scoping review; Level of evidence, 4. METHODS: This review was conducted following the guidelines of the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews a

Enlarged colony housing promotes linear progression of subchondral bone remodeling in joint instability rat models.

Objective: Osteoarthritis (OA) is a disease with high prevalence and an unmet medical need for disease modifying treatments. In rat models, OA-like subchondral bone and cartilage changes can be induced by instability surgery with different severity levels. Factors which determine structural changes additionally comprise the study duration and activity-impacted joint loading. Methods: A medial meniscal tear (MMT) or anterior cruciate ligament transection with partial meniscectomy (ACLT+pMx) was induced unilaterally in rats housed in a rat colony cage (RCC), allowing high activity levels includi

Acute systemic macrophage depletion in osteoarthritic mice alleviates pain-related behaviors and does not affect joint damage.

BACKGROUND: Osteoarthritis (OA) is a painful degenerative joint disease and a leading source of years lived with disability globally due to inadequate treatment options. Neuroimmune interactions reportedly contribute to OA pain pathogenesis. Notably, in rodents, macrophages in the DRG are associated with onset of persistent OA pain. Our objective was to determine the effects of acute systemic macrophage depletion on pain-related behaviors and joint damage using surgical mouse models in both sexes. METHODS: We depleted CSF1R+ macrophages by treating male macrophage Fas-induced apoptosis (MaFIA

Fibrin clot augmentation of high-risk meniscal repairs may result in clinical healing in up to 90% of cases.

OBJECTIVE: While meniscal repair is preferable to meniscectomy, some cases may be at higher risk of failure if repaired. Incorporating fibrin clot (FC) into the repair has been proposed to improve healing rates. The purpose of this study was to determine the failure rates, patient reported outcome measures (PROMs) and complications of FC augmented meniscal repair for cases considered to be at higher risk of failure. METHODS: A retrospective case series of all patients undergoing FC augmented repair of isolated meniscus tears between January 2016 and September 2021 was undertaken. All cases we

A Single-Centre, Retrospective, Observational Study to Assess Safety and Functional Outcomes of Arthroscopic Meniscal Repair Using Surestitch All Inside Implant.

Introduction The meniscus plays a vital role in maintaining knee stability. It acts as a shock absorber and knee filler. The incidence of meniscal tears is estimated to be 60 per 100,000 people. Due to lack of awareness among patients, only 10% of the meniscus tears were treated through partial or total meniscectomy. Recently, the concept of meniscus preservation surgery has emerged to preserve early degeneration of the knee joint. In the current retrospective study, safety and functional outcomes of arthroscopic meniscal repair surgery using Surestitch All inside implants (Sironix Arthroscopy

Effect of Meniscal Treatment on Functional Outcomes 6 Months After Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: Meniscal injuries are commonly associated with anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears. Treatment of meniscal injuries can impart delayed weightbearing and range of motion restrictions, which can affect the rehabilitation protocol. The effect of meniscal treatment and subsequent restrictions on strength recovery after ACL reconstruction is unclear. PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: The purpose of this study was to compare strength, jumping performance, and patient-reported outcomes between patients who underwent isolated ACL reconstruction (ACLR) and those who underwent surgical intervention for

Long-term Minimum 15-Year Follow-up After Lateral Discoid Meniscus Rim Preservation Surgery in Children and Adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Discoid meniscus is a congenital variant typically affecting the lateral meniscus of the knee. Historically, surgical intervention when symptomatic consisted of total meniscectomy; however, after degenerative changes were observed, current treatments now focus on rim preservation with arthroscopic saucerization and meniscal repair for instability, when indicated. The purpose of our study was to examine long-term patient-reported outcomes of lateral discoid meniscus (LDM) treated with meniscal-preserving techniques. METHODS: Ninety-eight patients treated arthroscopically for LDM at

A Randomized Controlled Trial of Bone-Patellar Tendon-Bone Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction With and Without Lateral Extra-articular Tenodesis: 19-Year Clinical and Radiological Follow-up.

BACKGROUND: Arthroscopic anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction (ACLR) with a bone-patellar tendon-bone graft (BTB) is a reliable surgical option for the control of anterior knee laxity after ACL injury. The addition of a lateral extra-articular tenodesis (LET) may improve control of rotation knee laxity and improve short-term graft survival in high-risk patients. PURPOSE: The aims of this study were to compare long-term patient-reported outcomes, graft survival, and risk of osteoarthritis between ACLR with and without LET.
