Functional and Bioactive Benefits of Selected Microalgal Hydrolysates Assessed In Silico and In Vitro.

BIOPEP-UWM, a peptide database, contains 5128 peptides from a myriad of resources. Five listed peptides are Angiotensin-I-converting enzyme (ACE-1; EC3.4.15.1) inhibitory peptides derived from a red alga, while two from Chlorella vulgaris have anti-cancer and antioxidative bioactivities. Herein, we describe a process combining hydrolysis with two enzymes, Alcalase and Viscozyme, and filtration to generate protein-rich, bioactive peptide-containing hydrolysates from mixed species of Chlorella sp. and Scenedesmus sp. The potential of generated algal hydrolysates to act as food ingredients was de

Species- and reactor-aware machine learning for prediction and optimization of microalgal biomass productivity in photobioreactor-based bioresource systems.

Microalgal biomass productivity depends on the complex interactions between the microalgal species, cultivation factors, nutrients, and reactor design. Improving this productivity is important for algae-based bioresource production, biological CO2 utilization, and early-stage screening of photobioreactor operating conditions. This study developed a species- and reactor-aware machine-learning framework to predict and optimize volumetric biomass productivity of Chlorella vulgaris, Spirulina platensis, and Scenedesmus sp. using operational, nutritional, system-level, and reactor-design variables

Algal bioactive compounds for next-generation biopesticides: a multi-target resource for sustainable pest management.

The rapid growth in global population and the incessant demand for food warrant greater attention to sustainable agricultural practices. To ensure adequate food security, protection of crops from exposure to biotic agents (e.g., pathogens and insects) is imperative. Over the decades, synthetic pesticides have been used to control pests in agriculture. However, excessive and uncontrolled use of these chemical compounds causes serious environmental and health hazards. Therefore, algal biopesticides are used as biological agents to control soil-borne diseases and plant pests. The algae secrete a

Gambieroxides, a diverse metabolite class produced by the dinoflagellate genera Gambierdiscus and Fukuyoa.

Ciguatera poisoning (CP) is the most prevalent marine toxin illness globally and disproportionately affects people from circumtropical regions due to the occurrence of the causative microalgae, Gambierdiscus. Increased reports of CP cases globally are linked to changing ocean temperatures, localized outbreaks in new regions and importation of ciguatoxin-contaminated fish into non-endemic regions. Gambierdiscus spp. produce several classes of bioactive polyether metabolites in addition to ciguatoxins, including gambierones, maitotoxins, gambieroxide, gambierol and gambieric acids. Cascade-Amplifying Immunophototherapy Nanoplatform Integrating Cocktail Drug Delivery.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) offers the advantages of non-invasiveness, non-drug resistance, and high selectivity. However, its efficacy against melanoma is substantially limited by tumor hypoxia, elevated glutathione levels, and the strong antioxidant and light-absorbing properties of melanin. Herein, we developed a cascade-amplified biomimetic nanoplatform (Cyan-Cu) by assembling cyanobacteria (Cyan) and DSPE-PEG-NH2-decorated copper (II) phthalocyanine (CuPc) for enhanced melanoma therapy. Under 635 nm laser irradiation, the Cyan-Cu not only simultaneously generates both reactive oxygen speci

Riding the Storm: Microeukaryote Community Responses to Hurricane Disturbance.

Sandy beaches are dynamic ecosystems where terrestrial and marine organisms coexist, resulting in diverse communities where microeukaryotes (protists, microalgae, and meiofauna) are key drivers. Understanding their diversity patterns and responses to stressors is essential for elucidating ecological processes, yet information on this subject remains limited. Herein, microeukaryotic diversity in a sandy beach in Acapulco, Guerrero, was analyzed via ITS1 metabarcoding assessing community structure changes following hurricane Otis. Overall, the number of ASVs decreased substantially from 260 befo

Heat shock transcription factor-mediated thermal tolerance and cell size plasticity in marine diatoms.

Diatoms are a crucial component of marine ecosystems, recognized for their broad environmental adaptability and wide temperature tolerance. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying their adaptability to diverse temperatures are unknown. In this study, we discover that heat shock transcription factors (HSFs) are potentially important for thermal tolerance in diatoms. Our study focuses on PtHSF2, annotated as HSF2 in Phaeodactylum tricornutum's genome, which is ubiquitous in diatoms. Overexpression of PtHSF2 markedly enhances thermal tolerance and increases cell size; causes significant diff

Unveiling the integrated toxicological effects and underlying mechanisms of bisphenol A and cadmium, two hormesis-type endocrine disruptors, on Chromochloris zofingiensis.

Bisphenol A (BPA) and cadmium (Cd2 +) are typical endocrine-disrupting compounds (EDCs) that often coexist in aquatic environments and disrupt hormonal pathways, causing adverse effects on organisms. This study showed that both BPA and Cd2+ exhibited hormesis effects on Chromochloris zofingiensis, with promoting concentrations of 0.1 mg L-1 and 0.05 mg L-1, while inhibiting concentrations of 10 mg L-1 and 2.5 mg L-1, respectively. The combination of inhibiting concentrations of BPA and Cd2+ significantly elevated intracellular reactive oxygen species level, which resulted in more severe growth

Structured Triacylglycerol with Optimal Arachidonic Acid and Docosahexaenoic Acid Content for Infant Formula Development: A Bio-Accessibility Study.

Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), especially arachidonic acid (ARA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), are extremely important fatty acids for brain development in the fetus and early childhood. Premature infants face challenges obtaining these two fatty acids from their mothers. It has been reported that supplementation with triacylglycerols (TAGs) with an ARA:DHA (w/w) ratio of 2:1 may be optimal for preterm infants, as presented in commercial formulas such as Formulaid™. This study explored methods to produce TAGs with a 2:1 ratio (ARA:DHA), particularly at the more bioavailable sn-2 positi
