Causes of mortality in commercial organic layers in Denmark.

A longitudinal study investigated the courses of mortality in commercial free-range organic layer flocks in Denmark. In total, 15 organic egg-producing flocks from 11 farms were randomly selected among 80 farms registered in Denmark. Four farms with confined egg production on deep litter were included for comparison. Flock sizes ranged from 2260 to 5940 layers. The flocks were monitored from introduction to the layer farm until slaughter. Flock mortalities ranged from approximately 2% to 91%, with a mean of 20.8% for organic flocks compared with 7% for confined flocks on deep litter. In total,

Pneumonic pasteurellosis: examination of typable and untypable Pasteurella haemolytica strains for leukotoxin production, plasmid content, and antimicrobial susceptibility.

Plasmid DNA screening experiments were conducted to determine whether a relationship existed between the presence of plasmids and antibiotic resistance in Pasteurella haemolytica or the capability to produce hemolysin or leukotoxin (cytotoxin). Regardless of plasmid content, all P haemolytica isolates produced characteristic hemolysis on blood agar plates. Similarly, standardized suspensions of living bacteria and sterile concentrated (approx 200:1) culture supernatant from strains representing each of the 15 recognized P haemolytica serotypes and 7 field strains of P haemolytica (biotype A, s

Effects of high and low environmental temperatures on clinical course of fowl cholera in turkeys.

Turkeys inoculated with Pasteurella multocida either in the palatine air spaces or via drinking water were maintained t high (33.4-37.4 C), low (2.6-5.3 C), and moderate (19.8-22.4 C) temperatures in temperature-controlled chambers to determine the influence environmental temperature had on the pathogenesis of fowl cholera. In inoculated turkeys maintained at high temperatures, there was a delay in the onset of depression and, in most instances, in mortality in relation to those at low or moderate temperatures. In turkeys inoculated via drinking water and maintained at low temperatures, there

Quantifying trade-offs between therapeutic efficacy and resistance dissemination for enrofloxacin dose regimens in cattle.

The use of antimicrobial drugs in food-producing animals contributes to the selection pressure on pathogenic and commensal bacteria to become resistant. This study aims to evaluate the existence of trade-offs between treatment effectiveness, cost, and the dynamics of resistance in gut commensal bacteria. We developed a within-host ordinary differential equation model to track the dynamics of antimicrobial drug concentrations and bacterial populations in the site of infection (lung) and the gut. The model was parameterized to represent enrofloxacin treatment for bovine respiratory disease (BRD)

Factors associated with lung cytology as obtained by non-endoscopic broncho-alveolar lavage in group-housed calves.

BACKGROUND: Respiratory infections are the main indication for antimicrobial use in calves. As in humans and horses, studying inflammation of the deep airways by lung cytology raises the possibility of preventing respiratory disease and targeting its treatment in the future. Whether lung cytology findings coincide with clinical signs and lung ultrasonographic findings is currently unknown. Therefore, the objective of the present study was to determine the association of lung cytology with clinical signs, lung consolidation and broncho-alveolar lavage fluid (BALf) characteristics (including bac

[Bacterial resistance in bacteria isolated from the nasal cavity of Swiss dairy calves].

Fifty-six E. coli, 37 P. multocida und 8 M. haemolytica were isolated from 157 nasal swabs taken from calves in 52 dairy herds. The antibiotic susceptibility of the organisms was determined by measurement of the minimal inhibitory concentrations. Of the 56 E. coli isolates, 55.3% exhibited resistance to tetracyclines, 55.3% to sulfonamides, 39.3% to beta-lactams, 30.3% to aminoglycosides, 8.9% to fluorochinolones and 3.5% to 3rd generation cephalosporins. The 3rd generation cephalosporin- resistant isolates contained the extended spectrum-beta-lactamase gene blaCTX-M-14 and came from 2 farms w

Development of a time-resolved fluorescent lateral flow immunochromatographic strip for detection of Mycoplasma bovis antibodies.

Mycoplasma bovis (M. bovis), a significant etiological agent of Bovine Respiratory Disease (BRD), has exhibited a marked increase in global prevalence, manifesting as multi-systemic diseases including pneumonia, mastitis, and arthritis. These infections are characterized by protracted courses, antibiotic resistance, and high mortality, posing substantial threats to livestock health and causing severe economic losses. To address the current lack of rapid and accurate diagnostic methods, this study developed a time-resolved fluorescent microsphere-based immunochromatographic test strip (TRFM-ICT

Survey of susceptibility to marbofloxacin in bacteria isolated from diseased pigs in Europe.

A monitoring programme of marbofloxacin susceptibility of bacteria from Europe causing respiratory tract infection and meningitis in pigs has been active since 1994 and 2002, respectively. Monitoring digestive, metritis and urinary tract infection (UTI) in pigs has been active since 2005 and susceptibility results until 2013 are presented. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was determined by broth microdilution. For MIC interpretation, Vétoquinol-evaluated breakpoints were applied. For digestive pathogens, Escherichia coli and Salmonella species (1717 and 300 isolates, respectively) exhibi

Serologic survey for selected arboviruses and other potential pathogens in wildlife from Mexico.

During 1988 and 1989, a serologic survey of wildlife was conducted in northeastern Mexico to determine the presence, prevalence, and distribution of arboviruses and other selected disease agents. Eighty mammal specimens were tested. Antibodies to vesicular stomatitis-Indiana, Venezuelan equine encephalitis-Mena II, Rio Grande virus, and vesicular stomatitis-New Jersey were detected predominantly in small mammals. Deer and mouflon (Ovis musimon) had antibodies to bluetongue and epizootic hemorrhagic disease. Two species had serologic evidence of recent exposure to Francisella tularensis. A whit

Occurrence of respiratory and enteric bacteria and viruses in calves in Iceland.

BACKGROUND: Respiratory and gastrointestinal diseases in calves pose a significant challenge to the cattle industry due to their impact on mortality rates, economic losses, animal welfare, and antimicrobial usage. Understanding which pathogens are involved is crucial for optimizing both treatment and preventive measures. In Iceland, bovine respiratory disease in calves is relatively rare, whereas neonatal calf diarrhea is more frequent. However, limited diagnostic resources in the country have resulted in a lack of knowledge about the specific pathogens involved. This study aimed to investigat

First Detection and Genetic Characterization of Influenza D Virus in Cattle in Spain.

Influenza D virus (IDV) and co-circulating respiratory pathogens were investigated using RT-qPCR in 316 samples collected from 210 Spanish cattle farms with bovine respiratory disease (BRD) outbreaks between July 2023 and September 2024. Thirty-eight IDV-positive samples, from 30 farms across 15 provinces throughout Spain, were identified. IDV was significantly more frequent in bronchoalveolar lavage samples (22.1%) and nasal swabs (13.5%) compared to lung tissues (5%) and other sample mixtures (5%). All IDV-positive specimens exhibited co-infections, with most (94.7%) harboring three to seven

Comparative evaluation of trimethoprim-sulfonamide ratios and synergistic interactions against porcine respiratory pathogens.

INTRODUCTION: Potentiated sulfonamides are widely used in the treatment of porcine respiratory disease complex, but their synergistic activity depends on pathogen-related and pharmacodynamic factors, including the trimethoprim-to-sulfonamide ratio. This study aimed to systematically evaluate the effect of different ratios on in vitro antibacterial interactions against major porcine respiratory pathogens. METHODS: Trimethoprim was combined with sulfamethoxazole, sulfachloropyridazine, or sulfadiazine at four mass ratios (1:5, 1:10, 1:19, 1:40). Minimum inhibitory concentrations were determined

Identification of Mycoplasma Species in Cattle Associated with Bovine Respiratory Disease Mortality.

Approximately 30 distinct Mycoplasma species have been isolated from cattle, but only a few are pathogenic and can cause serious respiratory diseases. Consequently, this study aimed to identify Mycoplasma spp. infections in cattle with bovine respiratory disease (BRD), considering factors such as animal demographics, concurrent infections with other pathogens, post-mortem clinical findings and histological examinations, and seasonality. A total of 326 samples were collected from 322 cattle that had died from BRD in Northwestern Italy. A total of 54 animals (16.8%) tested positive for Mycoplasm

Genetic parameters of resistance to pasteurellosis using novel response traits in rabbits.

BACKGROUND: Pasteurellosis (Pasteurella infection) is one of the most common bacterial infections in rabbits on commercial farms and in laboratory facilities. Curative treatments using antibiotics are only partly efficient, with frequent relapses. Breeding rabbits for improved genetic resistance to pasteurellosis is a sustainable alternative approach. In this study, we infected 964 crossbred rabbits from six sire lines experimentally with Pasteurella multocida. After post-mortem examination and bacteriological analyses, abscess, bacteria, and resistance scores were derived for each rabbit base
