A high-resolution voxel model for predicting local tissue temperatures in humans subjected to warm and hot environments.

This work describes and presents results from a new three-dimensional whole-body model of human thermoregulation. The model has been implemented using a version of the "Brooks Man" anatomical data set, consisting of 1.3x10(8) cubic volume elements (voxels) measuring 0.2 cm/side. The model simulates thermoregulation through passive mechanisms (metabolism, blood flow, respiration, and transpiration) and active mechanisms (vasodilatation, vasoconstriction, sweating, and shivering). Compared with lumped or compartment models, a voxel model is capable of high spatial resolution and can capture a le

Lack of nonshivering thermogenesis in infants anesthetized with fentanyl and propofol.

BACKGROUND: Sweating, vasoconstriction, and shivering have been observed during general anesthesia. Among these, vasoconstriction is especially important because-once triggered-it minimizes further hypothermia. Surprisingly, the core-temperature plateau associated with vasoconstriction appears to preserve core temperature better in infants and children than adults. This observation suggests that vasoconstriction in anesthetized infants may be accompanied by hypermetabolism. Consistent with this theory, unanesthetized infants rely on nonshivering thermogenesis to double heat production when vas

Comparison of forced-air patient warming systems for perioperative use.

BACKGROUND: Perianesthetic hypothermia is common and produces several complications, including postoperative shivering, decreased drug metabolism and clearance, and impaired wound healing. Forced-air warming transfers more than 50 W to the body and is an efficient method for either preventing or reversing decreases in core temperature. METHODS: The authors compared the efficacy of four complete forced-air warming systems: (1) Bair Hugger 250/PACU Patient Warming System with 300 Warming Cover (Augustine Medical, Eden Prairie, MN); (2) Thermacare TC1000 Power Unit with TC1050 Comfort Quilt (Gay

Pharmacological effects and pharmacokinetics of atipamezole, a novel alpha 2-adrenoceptor antagonist--a randomized, double-blind cross-over study in healthy male volunteers.

1. Single doses (10, 30 and 100 mg) of atipamezole (MPV-1248), a new potent and selective imidazole-type alpha 2-adrenoceptor antagonist, and saline placebo were administered as 20 min intravenous infusions to six healthy male volunteers in a randomized double-blind, cross-over phase I study. Later, 100 mg atipamezole was given orally to the same subjects in an open fashion. 2. The i.v. doses resulted in linearly dose-related concentrations of atipamezole in plasma. Pharmacokinetic calculations revealed an elimination half-life of 1.7-2.0 h, an apparent volume of distribution of 3.0-3.5 l kg-1

Early BMP7 Exposure Enhances Brown Adipogenic Differentiation of Tonsil-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells.

BACKGROUND: Brown adipose tissue (BAT) dissipates energy via non-shivering thermogenesis, making it a promising therapeutic target for metabolic diseases. However, effective strategies for directing human stem cells toward brown adipocyte lineage remain to be fully established. Here, as an early commitment modulation study, we investigated whether stage-specific exposure to bone morphogenetic protein 7 (BMP7) during initial induction enhances brown adipocyte-like features and β-adrenergic responsiveness in tonsil-derived mesenchymal stem cells (TMSCs). METHODS: TMSCs were induced to different

Ice-water sheet coverage for rapid core temperature reduction in exertional heat stroke: A case series.

BACKGROUND: Exertional heat stroke (EHS) requires immediate cooling to prevent organ injury and death. Although cold-water immersion (CWI) is the recommended first-line cooling modality, it is often difficult to implement safely in the emergency department (ED), particularly in patients requiring airway management or ongoing resuscitation. This study aimed to describe an ice-water-soaked sheet coverage protocol and preliminarily evaluate its cooling efficacy and feasibility in patients with EHS. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study of patients with EHS admitted to the ED between May 20
