Sporotrichosis is a chronic fungal infection that most commonly involves the skin and lymphatics. It is classified into five forms: classic lymphocutaneous, fixed cutaneous, disseminated cutaneous, primary pulmonary, and systemic sporotrichosis. Its diagnosis is established by fungal culture or by direct immunofluorescence. Safe effective therapy for cutaneous sporotrichosis exists in the form of oral potassium iodide and local heat therapy. However, itraconazole, one of the newer triazole antimycotic agents, appears quite effective against Sporothrix schenckii and may provide a means of reduc

Sporotrichosis is frequently primary in the lungs, caused by inhalation or aspiration of spores of Sporothrix schenckii. The clinical features and roentgenographic changes are nonspecific and usually indistinguishable from reactivated pulmonary tuberculosis. Therefore, pulmonary sporotrichosis should be considered when the tuberculin test and sputum cultures for Mycobacterium tuberculosis are persistently negative. Direct fluorescent antibody is a reliable, rapid, and specific method of identifying organisms in specimens and tissue biopsies. While the agglutination test is very sensitive in de

BACKGROUND: Sporotrichosis is a chronic granulomatous infection caused by Sporothrichum schenckii. The disease has worldwide distribution. Majority of cases from India are reported from North-eastern states.
METHODS: The demographic, clinico-investigative profile and therapeutic results of nine patients with cutaneous sporotrichosis attending the Dermatology Outdoor Department between January 2005 and June 2006 have been compiled.
RESULTS: Out of nine (male-4, female-5) patients, five had lymphocutaneous-type sporotrichosis while four had fixed cutaneous sporotrichosis. The average age of th

Four antifungal agents, amphotericin B, SDZ 89-485, itraconazole, and terbinafine, were tested for efficacy in a murine model of systemic sporotrichosis. Survival in the groups treated with amphotericin B, SDZ 89-485, and itraconazole was significantly better than that of control infected mice. However, these agents did not wholly protect the infected mice, as tail and paw lesions, whole-body radiographs, and positive cultures from survivors showed evidence of dissemination. Terbinafine-treated mice had the same or poorer survival as control infected mice, despite documented drug absorption.

Sporotrichosis is a globally distributed subcutaneous mycosis caused by dimorphic Sporothrix species commonly found in soil, mosses, and decaying plant matter. The lymphocutaneous manifestation, historically associated with occupational activities and sapronotic transmission, has recently been observed to also occur through animal contact, particularly notable in Brazil. We describe a rare case of lymphocutaneous sporotrichosis with simultaneous pulmonary complications resulting from the scratching of a southern three-banded armadillo, Tolypeutes matacus, primarily inhabiting the arid forests

Ocular sporotrichosis is rare in Malaysia and Southeast Asia and is increasingly reported in endemic areas of Brazil and Peru. We describe six cases of ocular sporotrichosis involving the bulbar conjunctiva and lid with a literature review on ocular sporotrichosis in Southeast Asia. In these series, four patients presented with similar findings of granulomatous lesion at the palpebral conjunctiva within 1-3 weeks. There was one case mistakenly diagnosed as conjunctival concretion due to its multiple yellowish nodules on the palpebral conjunctiva and another case as chalazion due to swelling of

The present study aimed to detect Bartonella DNA in cats belonging to shelters, and to evaluate risk factors, clinical signs, and hematological abnormalities associated with infection. Complete blood counts and screening for the presence of Bartonella DNA were performed on cats' ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid anticoagulant-blood samples. Eighty-three cats (39.9%) were positive for Bartonella species. Bartonella DNA was also detected in fleas and in the blood of cats infested by positive flea. Cats that had not been sterilized, had outdoor access, had histories of fights, and had concurrent f

OBJECTIVE: Sporotrichosis is a common subcutaneous mycosis caused by an infection with dimorphic fungus Sporothrix schenckii. We present a series of patients with eyelid sporotrichosis and study the clinical and histopathological presentation, microbiology, treatment options, and outcome.
METHODS: A retrospective case-series study of patients with a clinical diagnosis of eyelid sporotrichosis. Records were examined to obtain information regarding patient demographics, presenting symptoms and signs, histopathological examination, microbiology, management, and outcomes.
RESULTS: Ten patients (

Syrian hamsters were infected with Sporothrix schenckii by subcutaneous footpad inoculation. Two types of infection could be uniformly induced: a self-limited, lymphatic infection resembling the classical disease in humans, and a generalized nonfatal infection. An infecting dose of approximately 5,300 yeast cells produced the localized subcutaneous-lymphatic disease which was limited to a single limb. In contrast, a 1,000-fold increase in the inoculum temporarily overwhelmed the animals' defense mechanisms, producing a systemic infection involving the liver and spleen. These models were used t

Brazil is an endemic region for both human and feline sporotrichosis, with Sporothrix brasiliensis being the main etiological agent. Currently, few effective antifungal agents are available for treating this mycosis in cats, and therapeutic studies remain limited. Itraconazole (ITZ) is the first-line drug; however, its effectiveness is variable. To evaluate the use of ITZ combined with β-glucans (Euglena gracilis) in feline sporotrichosis, a prospective, uncontrolled interventional study was conducted in 29 cats. Clinical cure was achieved in 21 animals (72.4%) with a median treatment duration

Sporotrichosis has multiple clinical manifestations, and its cutaneous-disseminated form is uncommon and, in most cases, related to immunosuppressive conditions. We report the case of a 47-year-old male patient who presented with multiple cutaneous nodules and ulcers on the left upper limb and the right thigh, with no other comorbidities. Until the diagnosis was confirmed, the patient was initially given empiric antifungal treatment with itraconazole, which showed unsatisfactory results at a local hospital. Then, he was treated with voriconazole, which led to the slow improvement of his skin l

Sporotrichosis is the most frequent and worldwide distributed subcutaneous mycoses. The aim of this article is to review the most recent aspects of sporotrichosis about its epidemiology, etiologic agents, mycologic characteristics, clinical features, diagnosis and treatment. The causative agents of sporotrichosis belong to five well defined species of dimorphic fungi of the called Sporothrix schenckii complex. Sporotrichosis and its etiologic agents have specific endemic areas, but it is possible to find epidemics of the disease in practically every continent, the entrance via is cutaneous due

Vesicular secretion of macromolecules has recently been described in the basidiomycete Cryptococcus neoformans, raising the question as to whether ascomycetes similarly utilize vesicles for transport. In the present study, we examine whether the clinically important ascomycete Histoplasma capsulatum produce vesicles and utilized these structures to secrete macromolecules. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) shows transcellular secretion of vesicles by yeast cells. Proteomic and lipidomic analyses of vesicles isolated from culture supernatants reveal a rich collection of macromolecules invol

We performed a serological study with sera from 92 patients with confirmed sporotrichosis registered between 1999 and 2004 in two hospitals in Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil. The clinical presentation of sporotrichosis was distributed as follows: lymphocutaneous, 67%; fixed cutaneous, 23%; disseminated cutaneous, 8%; and extracutaneous, 2%. Sera were assayed by ELISA against a cell wall antigen of Sporothrix schenckii, SsCBF, that we have previously described. The cross-reactivity was determined with 77 heterologous sera. The serological test showed a sensitivity of 90% and a global efficiency o
