Efficacy of emodepside plus toltrazuril (Procox(®) oral suspension for dogs) against Toxocara canis, Uncinaria stenocephala and Ancylostoma caninum in dogs.

The efficacy of emodepside plus toltrazuril (Procox® oral suspension for dogs) against different species of gastrointestinal nematodes (Toxocara canis, Ancylostoma caninum, Uncinaria stenocephala) was evaluated in nine randomised, blinded and placebo-controlled laboratory studies in naturally or experimentally infected dogs. The product was used at the proposed minimum dose of 0.45 mg emodepside and 9 mg toltrazuril per kg body weight. Efficacy was calculated based on worm counts after necropsy. Worm burdens in the control dogs ranged between 0 and 409 worms of the respective stage for T. canis

Toxoplasma gondii and Toxocara spp. co-infection.

Toxoplasma gondii and Toxocara spp. infections can cause systemic and ocular disease. To estimate the prevalence of infection with these organisms, we tested serum samples from persons > or = 12 years of age obtained in the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (1988-1994). Among those tested for both T. gondii and Toxocara spp. (n = 16,646), the age-adjusted T. gondii antibody prevalence was 23.6% (95% confidence limit [CL] = 22.1-25.1%) and the Toxocara spp. antibody prevalence was 14.0% (95% CL = 12.7-15.4%). Multivariate analysis controlling demographic and risk factors sh

Seasonal fluctuations in prevalence of dog intestinal parasites in public squares of Mar del Plata city, Argentina and its risk for humans.

The aim of this work is to analyze whether there is a seasonal prevalence of parasites in dog feces from public squares in Mar del Plata city, Argentina, and to evaluate the climatic conditions that promote the development of parasites and allow the transmission to people. The study was performed in 21 squares from June 2001 to May 2002. Samples were processed by the Willis technique. Differences in prevalence of parasites were examined for significance by the Chi-square test. Climatic data were obtained from the Library of the National Meteorological Service of Argentina. Total parasitic prev

[Standardization of ELISA IgM and IgA for immunodiagnosis of human trichinosis].

An ELISA test for trichinosis using as antigen a larvae soluble fraction from Trichinella spiralis was carried out for the detection of IgM and IgA specific antibodies in 45 serum samples from patients confirmed or suspected to have trichinosis by strong clinical and epidemiological evidences. All the patients had positive serology detected by precipitin test, bentonite floculation test, indirect hemagglutination test and ELISA IgG test. The cut-off value was determined using two criteria. Criterion A was determined in each plate, using three positive controls and two negative ones; the averag

Association between infection burden and adult height.

Although highly heritable, adult height is also associated with numerous environmental factors, including exposure to infection. Particularly in developing regions of the world, infection burden appears to slow growth during childhood. Using a large database representative of the US population, we examined associations between adult height and leg length and an infection-burden index based on past exposure to Toxocara species, Toxoplasmosis gondii, cytomegalovirus, hepatitis A, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, herpes simplex virus 1, and herpes simplex virus 2. In models controlled for age, sex, educ

Persistent airway hyper-responsiveness and inflammation in Toxocara canis-infected BALB/c mice.

BACKGROUND: Infection with Toxocara canis, the roundworm of dogs, has been associated with asthmatic manifestations. Clinical symptoms such as wheezing, coughing and episodic airflow obstruction have been described for patients infected with this helminth. OBJECTIVE: In order to characterize the effect of T. canis infection on the lungs, we monitored immune responses, pulmonary pathology and lung function over a period of 60 days in BALB/c mice. METHODS: Infection was performed by a single oral administration of 1000 T. canis embryonated eggs. Airway responsiveness was measured in conscious,

Enhanced inducible nitric oxide synthase expression and nitrotyrosine accumulation in experimental granulomatous hepatitis caused by Toxocara canis in mice.

The involvement of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and nitrotyrosine (NT) in pathogenesis of toxocaral granulomatous hepatitis (TGH) in a murine host was quantitatively determined by biochemical, parasitological, pathological, and immunohistochemical assessments in a 42-week investigation. Mice were sacrificed for serum collection and histological processing as well as acid-pepsin digestion of the liver in a larval recovery study. Significantly increased levels of total serum NO were found in the trial, indirectly suggesting iNOS activation in the liver. iNOS reactivity was predominantl

Small animal deworming protocols, client education, and veterinarian perception of zoonotic parasites in western Canada.

Questionnaires were mailed to veterinarians in western Canada to determine dog and cat deworming protocols and the association between perceived zoonotic risk and perceived prevalence of endoparasites and deworming protocols. Of the responding veterinarians (545), 13% and 39% recommended deworming protocols consistent with established guidelines for puppies and kittens, respectively. Mixed animal practitioners and high-perceived prevalence of Toxocara cati were associated with increased appropriate kitten deworming (P < 0.01 and P = 0.04, respectively). High-perceived zoonotic concern of Toxoc

Alteration in immune response of mice with dual infection of Toxocara canis and Japanese encephalitis virus.

Concurrent dual infections of mice with Toxocara canis and Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) showed a distinct synergistic effect of the parasite on sublethal JEV infection. Dose-dependent effects were evident in the mice infected dually and with T. canis alone; leucocytosis with suppression of eosinophilia in the peripheral blood and reduction in migration inhibition factor produced by spleen cells in response to T. canis and JEV antigens were recorded, particularly in the former group. These changes were accompanied by reductions in both antibody response to sheep erythrocytes and T cell num

Association between Alzheimer's disease and Toxocara infection/exposure: a case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Infections may contribute to Alzheimer's disease (AD) risk. Limited evidence suggests Toxocara spp. infection/exposure could influence AD development. METHODS: We investigated Toxocara seropositivity and AD in Iranian adults using a matched case-control study. Our sample included 90 AD cases and 91 healthy older adults. Anti-Toxocara immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies were assessed via enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. We computed the odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) through univariable and multivariable analyses, adjusting for potential confounders. RESULTS:

Childhood parasitic infections endemic to the United States.

Endemic parasitic infections in the United States are more frequent than is commonly perceived. Intestinal parasitic infection with Cryptosporidium, Dientamoeba, and Giardia occurs most often in children in northern states during the summer months. Zoonotic Toxocara and Toxoplasma parasitic infections are more frequent in southern states, in African Americans, and in populations with lower socioeconomic status. Approximately 300, 000 people in the United States have Trypanosoma cruzi infection. Local, vector-borne transmission of T cruzi and Leishmania infections has been documented in souther

[Toxocara canis cerebral vasculitis revealed by iterative strokes].

INTRODUCTION: Cerebral vasculitis is a rare and severe condition, posing problems for diagnosis and treatment. Toxocara canis cerebral vasculitis is exceptionally rare, with only 4 cases having been reported. We report an additional case revealed by iterative strokes. OBSERVATION: A 49-years-old Laotian man presented with right ACA infarction associated with contrast enhancement of cerebrospinal fluid, and multiple segmental stenoses in small and medium caliber encephalic arteries, in a context of hypereosinophilia and chronic headaches. Laboratory tests showed lymphocytic meningitis and T. c

Cross-reactions with Ascaris suum antigens of sera from mice infected with A. suum, Toxocara canis, and Angiostrongylus cantonensis.

Ascaris suum larval excretory-secretory (AsES) antigen and larval (AsLA) as well as adult somatic antigen (AsAA) which were thought to be possibly helpful in the diagnosis of visceral larva migrans (VLM) due to A. suum infection were investigated in the present study. Serum taken from mice orally inoculated with approximately 250 embryonated eggs of A. suum or Toxocara canis, or 40 third-stage larvae of Angiostrongylus cantonensis were assessed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) using the AsES antigen, AsLA or AsAA at 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 and 8 weeks post infection (WPI). The titer of serum

Prevalence of Toxocara eggs in sandpits in Tokushima city and its outskirts.

To demonstrate the prevalence of Toxocara eggs in sandpits in Tokushima Prefecture, Japan, sand samples were examined. Of 46 sandpits surveyed, 29 sandpits (63.3%) had Toxocara eggs. Sandpits in public parks and playgrounds in residential areas were more contaminated (87.5%) with the eggs than those in kindergartens, schools, and children's centers (36.4%). To examine the seasonal change in the contamination, sand samples obtained from five sandpits were examined monthly from May 1990 to April 1991. Toxocara eggs were found in the majority of sandpits (3/5-5/5) in the spring, early summer, and

The specificity of nematode allergens in the diagnosis of human visceral larva migrans.

Extracts of nematodes have been used as skin test antigens in the diagnosis of nematode infections for many years. Ascaris lumbricoides and Toxocara canis are two nematodes commonly involved in human parasitism, the latter being associated with the clinical condition of Visceral Larva Migrans. In vitro and in vivo experiments reported in this paper confirm experimentally, as well as clinically, the existence of cross-reacting antigens between T. canis and Ascaris spp., and probably between T. canis and other nematodes. These cross-reactions compromise the usefulness of skin tests in the diagno

Toxocara-induced eosinophilic inflammation. Airway function and effect of anti-IL-5.

The immunoinflammatory response to parasitic nematode infections and allergic diseases have some similarities, the most profound being the increases in eosinophils and serum total IgE concentration. Whether parasitic infections stimulate or inhibit allergic asthma is a matter of debate. We investigated the effect of Toxocara canis (T. canis) infection on airway function in BALB/c mice at various days post-infection. Within 24 h after infection, the trachea responded hyperreactive to carbachol stimulation. Eosinophils, and to a lesser degree lymphocytes, infiltrated the airways causing intersti

Computed tomography of the nonrhegmatogenous retinal detachment in the pediatric patient.

Nonrhegmatogenous retinal detachments occur in the pediatric population secondary to other ocular disorders. The most important cause to identify is retinoblastoma. Computed tomography has proven to be the most reliable ancillary diagnostic test in this pediatric population. A series of eighty patients, presenting with nonrhegmatogenous retinal detachments, was examined. The role of computed tomography and characteristic clinical findings are discussed.
