Susceptibility to Fear of Heights in Bilateral Vestibulopathy and Other Disorders of Vertigo and Balance.

Aims: To determine the susceptibility to visual height intolerance (vHI) in patients with acquired bilateral vestibulopathy (BVP). The question was whether postural instability in BVP, which is partially compensated for by visual substitution of the impaired vestibular control of balance, leads to an increased susceptibility. This is of particular importance since fear of heights is dependent on body posture, and visual control of balance at heights can no longer substitute vestibular input. For comparison susceptibility to vHI was determined in patients with other vestibular or functional dis

Psychological assessment in children and adolescents with Benign Paroxysmal Vertigo.

Migraine in childhood and adolescence has been associated with the presence of behavioural and emotional difficulties, but only few data are available with respect to unusual types of headache syndromes such as Benign Paroxysmal Vertigo of Childhood (BPVC). Aim of the present study was to evaluate the behavioural and emotional profiles of clinically referred children and adolescents suffering from BPVC and migraine, as compared to normal controls. According to the revised International Classification of Headache Disorders (ICHD-2) the BPVC belongs to the category of "primary headache", as a mi

Differential Involvement of Lateral Semicircular Canal and Otolith Organs in Common Vestibular Disorders.

Semicircular canal and otolith functions came to be evaluated recently, but comprehensive and comparative analysis of canal and otolith dysfunction in common vestibular disorders is lacking. We aimed to analyze the abnormal rates of canal and otolith function in common vestibular disorders. We enrolled 302 patients who were managed for 2 months in a dizziness clinic. Results of caloric, video head impulse test (vHIT), and cervical and ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potential (cVEMP and oVEMP) tests were analyzed and compared among various diagnoses. Vestibular disorders diagnosed included r

Eye movements in demyelinating, autoimmune and metabolic disorders.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: In the last three decades, the use of eye movements and vestibular testing in many neurological disorders has accelerated, primarily because of practical technologic developments. Although the acute vestibular syndrome is a prime example of this progress, more chronic neurologic and systemic disorders have received less attention. We focus here on recent contributions relating vestibular and ocular motor abnormalities in inflammatory, demyelinating, metabolic, and peripheral nervous system disorders RECENT FINDINGS: Vestibular abnormalities have been identified in acute demy

Review of unusual intraoperative and postoperative complications associated with endosseous implant placement.

OBJECTIVES: Common complications associated with dental implant surgery are well recognized and are usually explained to patients during the process of informed consent. For the general dental practitioner, the periodontist, and the oral and maxillofacial surgeon, it is relevant to also be familiar with less frequent complications. This review gathers unusual complications of this surgical procedure and presents unique complications from single case reports. METHOD AND MATERIALS: Studies were located using systematic searches in Medline and the Cochrane Library electronic databases. Key words

[Assessment of senses of hearing and balance in chronic suppurative otitis media].

Chronic suppurative otitis media is among the most frequent illnesses treated in ENT wards. To establish the diagnosis, otomicroscopy alone usually suffice. Assessing the sense of hearing, often the sense of balance, too, is mandatory. Assessment of hearing will show the extent of conductive and sensorineural hearing loss. Apart from this, sometimes, when the finding is not obvious, it is necessary to conduct audiological investigation in more detail in order to establish whether the diagnosis of chronic suppurative otitis media is correct. Existence and extent of conductive hearing loss or co

[Frequency of dizziness-related diagnoses and prescriptions in a general practice database].

INTRODUCTION: Dizziness can be due to multiple causes. However, the aetiology often remains unclear. At the same time, there is a lack of evidence-based treatment options. The aim of this study was to investigate the frequency of dizziness-related diagnoses, referrals and prescriptions in a general practice database. METHODS: Data from computerized patient records of 138 general practices participating in the MedViP project were used for cross-sectional analysis of the time period April 2001 until December 2002. The identification of dizzy patients was performed via ICD-10 diagnoses, free tex

[Imaging of the labyrinth and vestibular nerve. Clinical significance for differential diagnosis of vestibular diseases].

High resolution magnetic resonance imaging (HR-MRI) and computed tomography (HR-CT) of the inner ear are becoming more important for the diagnosis of peripheral vestibular lesions. Modern HR-MRI techniques allow visualization of detailed anatomic features of the vestibulo-cochlear regions as well as pathologic findings in the inner ear such as, neoplastic lesions (e.g., small intracanalicular acoustic neuromas), anomalies causing vertigo and hearing loss (e.g. Mondini's-malformation, perilymph fistula, vestibular paroxysmia), and inflammatory diseases (e.g., Cogan's syndrome, labyrinthitis, zo

Sense of direction in vestibular disorders.

BACKGROUND: Our sense of direction (SOD) ability relies on the sensory integration of both visual information and self-motion cues from the proprioceptive and vestibular systems. Here, we assess how dysfunction of the vestibular system impacts perceived SOD in varying vestibular disorders, and secondly, we explore the effects of dizziness, migraine and psychological symptoms on SOD ability in patient and control groups. METHODS: 87 patients with vestibular disorder and 69 control subjects were assessed with validated symptom and SOD questionnaires (Santa Barbara Sense of Direction scale and t

Exploring the Significance of Vitamin D Levels as a Biomarker in Ear Diseases: A Narrative Review.

This narrative review examines the role of vitamin D as a biomarker in ear disorders, including benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), otitis media, bell's palsy, Meniere's disease, and hearing loss. PubMed, The Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar were utilized to conduct a comprehensive literature search, and findings were combined from studies from 2014 to 2024. As highlighted in this review, there is a consistent association between vitamin D deficiency and an increased risk and recurrence of disease especially in BPPV and otitis media. Its importance as a prognostic biomarker is emp

Simultaneous Multifrequency (SiMFy) Stimulus: A Novel and Reliable Stimulus for Frequency Tuning of Ocular Vestibular-Evoked Myogenic Potentials.

BACKGROUND: Frequency tuning of ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potential (oVEMP) refers to the frequency of tone burst that produces the largest amplitude oVEMP. There is an ever-growing pool of published studies that found the frequency tuning of oVEMP distinctly different in Ménière's disease than the age-matched controls and benign paroxysmal positional vertigo. However, recording oVEMP in response to many frequencies makes an already lengthy vestibular test battery even more cumbersome and time-consuming. PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to develop a novel time-saving stimulus that p
