Impact of diabetes mellitus on adenolymphangitis episodes in patients with filarial lymphedema-Towards an integrated care approach.

BACKGROUND: Filarial lymphedema, caused by lymphatic filariasis, is characterized by chronic swelling and recurrent skin infections. Acute adenolymphangitis (ADL) episodes significantly exacerbate morbidity. Diabetes mellitus (DM) increases susceptibility to infections; however, the relationship between diabetes and ADL frequency and severity in filarial lymphedema patients remains unclear. This study investigated the influence of diabetes on ADL attacks and identified predictors influencing ADL episodes in patients with filarial lymphedema. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: This case-control s

The impact of acute adenolymphangitis in podoconiosis on caregivers: A case study in Wayu Tuka woreda, Oromia, Western Ethiopia. 'If she was healthy, I would be free.'.

BACKGROUND: Podoconiosis, also known as mossy foot or endemic non-filarial elephantiasis, is a preventable form of lower-leg lymphoedema caused by prolonged (typically barefoot) exposure to soil derived from volcanic rocks. Acute adenolymphangitis (also called 'acute attack') is a serious complication of podoconiosis resulting in significant symptoms and worsening disability. Despite the well-known morbidity associated with podoconiosis, to date there have been no studies looking at the impact, or burden, of podoconiosis on caregivers. This study explored the experiences and impact of acute at

A Rare Case of Emberger Syndrome Caused By a De Novo Mutation in the GATA2 Gene.

Emberger syndrome, or primary lymphedema with myelodysplasia, is a severe rare disease characterized by early primary lymphedema and blood anomalies including acute childhood leukemia. The syndrome is associated with heterozygous mutations in the GATA2 gene. We report on a 13-year-old boy who developed lymphedema of the right lower limb at age 6 years which was accompanied by severe panleukopenia and repeated episodes of erysipelas. The suspicion of Emberger syndrome was confirmed by detection of a new germinal line GATA2 mutation c.414_417del, p.Ser139Cysfs*78. Clinical treatment included a b

Assessing numbers and faces: a prerequisite for improving access to lymphatic filariasis morbidity care.

Concerted efforts to eliminate lymphatic filariasis worldwide have registered success; multiple rounds of mass drug administration have led to the interruption of transmission in many previously endemic areas. However, the management of patients with established clinical disease (e.g., lymphoedema, hydrocoele and acute dermatolymphangioadenitis) has not been addressed sufficiently. Two recent studies from Malawi underscore the need for accurate epidemiological and clinical data, and comprehensive morbidity assessments across various domains of daily life. Addressing these issues will guide the

[Prominent efficacy from capecitabine mono-therapy for a case with lymphangiosis carcinomatosa derived from recurrent breast cancer].

We met a 61-year-old woman who had been suffering from dyspnea due to pleuritis carcinomatosa derived from recurrent breast cancer for which no former chemotherapy had been effective. Capecitabine mono-therapy could exert a drastic anticancer effect for lymphangiosis carcinomatosa causing more severe symptoms of dyspnea. This therapeutic option could be selected for patients with recurrent breast cancer for which the first- or second-line chemotherapy could not provide a sufficient anti-cancer efficacy and possibly serve to sustain the life quality of the patients.

Pulmonary lymphangitic carcinomatosis from squamous cell carcinoma of the cervix.

INTRODUCTION: Pulmonary metastasis presenting as lymphangitic carcinomatosis arising from squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the cervix is a rare event. Poorly represented in the literature, this event is associated with a) difficulty in accurate diagnosis, b) grave prognosis, and the c) lack of recognized predisposing risk factors. CASE REPORT: A 50 year-old female presented at our practice with a three-month history of a productive cough associated with dyspnoea and shortness of breath. A chest x-ray and computed tomography (CT) scan revealed multiple bilateral patchy areas with subsegmental

Osteomyelitis and septic arthritis complicating hand injuries and infections: pathogenesis of roentgenographic abnormalities.

Osteomyelitis and pyarthrosis may complicate hand injuries and soft-tissue infections, resulting in characteristic radiographic findings. Evaluation of 78 patients revealed bone or joint abnormalities in 10% of individuals. Distinct pathways are available for spread of bacteria which become lodged in the soft tissues of the hand. Such routes include tendon sheaths, fascial planes and lymphatics. An understanding or pertinent anatomy allows the radiologist to predict the site and pattern of soft tissue, articular and osseous alterations.

Atypical mucocutaneous manifestations of MPOX: A systematic review.

MPOX is an orthopoxvirus whose infection has been declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern in 2022 and 2024. It proved to be a virus with markedly heterogeneous and varied clinical presentation. We performed a systematic PubMed review of articles reporting cases of different clinical manifestations of MPOX until October 2024. The infection has mainly affected men who have sex with men. After 4 to 10 days of incubation, it presents with mucocutaneus lesions and systemic symptoms. Some anatomical sites have shown clinical particularities. Genital edema is a potentially serious

A journey through the Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis proteome promotes insights into its functional genome.

BACKGROUND: Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis is a Gram-positive facultative intracellular pathogen and the etiologic agent of illnesses like caseous lymphadenitis in small ruminants, mastitis in dairy cattle, ulcerative lymphangitis in equines, and oedematous skin disease in buffalos. With the growing advance in high-throughput technologies, genomic studies have been carried out to explore the molecular basis of its virulence and pathogenicity. However, data large-scale functional genomics studies are necessary to complement genomics data and better understating the molecular basis of a give

Acute felon and paronychia: Antibiotics not necessary after surgical treatment. Prospective study of 46 patients.

Paronychia and felon are the most common infections of the hand. Surgical treatment is required once an abscess develops, but systematic use of postoperative antibiotic therapy remains open for discussion. Antibiotics both favor the selection of resistant bacteria and increase the cost of treatment. To our knowledge, no study has demonstrated their benefit following excision, yet many practitioners prescribe them systematically and empirically. In our current practices, we do not use antibiotic coverage following excision of uncomplicated paronychia or felon (no signs of arthritis, osteitis, f

Epidemiology of elephantiasis with special emphasis on podoconiosis in Ethiopia: A literature review.

Elephantiasis is a symptom of a variety of diseases that is characterized by the thickening of the skin and underlying tissues, especially in the legs, male genitals and female breasts. Some conditions having this symptom include: Elephantiasis nostras, due to longstanding chronic lymphangitis; Elephantiasis tropica or lymphatic filariasis, caused by a number of parasitic worms, particularly Wuchereria bancrofti; non-filarial elephantiasis or podoconiosis, an immune disease caused by heavy metals affecting the lymph vessels; proteus syndrome, the genetic disorder of the so-called Elephant Man,

Experimental enteric infection of gnotobiotic piglets with Chlamydia suis strain S45.

Enteric chlamydial infections of pigs with Chlamydia (C.) suis are frequent and often subclinical. The enteric pathogenicity of C. suis strain S45 was investigated in gnotobiotic piglets. Piglets from three litters (n=31) were inoculated with egg-grown chlamydiae at 2-3 days of age (n=17) or used as controls (n=14). They were observed for clinical signs, killed and necropsied sequentially at 2-13 days postinoculation (DPI). Feces were collected daily and investigated with an ELISA for chlamydial antigen. At necropsy, specimens were collected for histopathology and for immunohistochemical, PCR-

An antigen detection assay for diagnosing filariasis.

In this study we examined the diagnostic potential of monoclonal antibodies (MAb) reactive to antigens of adult Brugia malayi, their microfilariae and antigen of Dirofilaria immitis. The MAb of clone 17E10, which were of IgM isotype, reacted to the inner cuticles and internal content of both male and female worms and also to the sheath and internal content of microfilariae in utero. However, these MAb did not react to the sheath of blood circulating microfilariae. The MAb 17E10 produced a smear pattern between 37 to > 200 kDa in the Western blot analysis against a SDS-PAGE separated extract of

Parasitologic and clinical features of bancroftian filariasis in a community in East Sepik Province, Papua New Guinea.

Bancroftian filariasis has been reported in several areas of Papua New Guinea. The epidemiologic features and natural history of Wuchereria bancrofti infection in this geographic region, however, have not been well-defined. The objective of this study was to assess the parasitological and clinical features of bancroftian filariasis in a community in East Sepik Province, Papua New Guinea. In a village of 99 individuals, the overall prevalence of microfilaremia was 68%. The microfilarial carrier rate was high in those less than or equal to 10 years (62%), remained elevated in the 11-20, 21-30, a

Exploring resistance to initial chemotherapy in small cell lung cancer: The role of bone metastasis and other clinicopathologic characteristics.

Clinically, approximately 10% to 20% of small cell lung cancer (SCLC) patients do not respond well to initial platinum-based first-line chemotherapy. Knowledge about the clinicopathologic characteristics of these primary drug-resistant populations is limited. This study aimed to explore the clinicopathologic characteristics in SCLC populations insensitive to initial chemotherapy. This study enrolled SCLC patients with insensitivity to initial chemotherapy and analyzed their clinicopathological characteristics. Binary logistic regression analysis was used to determine the independent factors th
