BACKGROUND: Discoid meniscus is a congenital variant typically affecting the lateral meniscus of the knee. Historically, surgical intervention when symptomatic consisted of total meniscectomy; however, after degenerative changes were observed, current treatments now focus on rim preservation with arthroscopic saucerization and meniscal repair for instability, when indicated. The purpose of our study was to examine long-term patient-reported outcomes of lateral discoid meniscus (LDM) treated with meniscal-preserving techniques.
METHODS: Ninety-eight patients treated arthroscopically for LDM at

BACKGROUND: Arthroscopic anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction (ACLR) with a bone-patellar tendon-bone graft (BTB) is a reliable surgical option for the control of anterior knee laxity after ACL injury. The addition of a lateral extra-articular tenodesis (LET) may improve control of rotation knee laxity and improve short-term graft survival in high-risk patients.
PURPOSE: The aims of this study were to compare long-term patient-reported outcomes, graft survival, and risk of osteoarthritis between ACLR with and without LET.
STUDY DESIGN: Randomized controlled trial; Level of evidenc

OBJECTIVE: Persistent symptoms and poor quality of life (QoL) are common following anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR). We aimed to determine the influence of a combined ACL injury (i.e., concomitant meniscectomy and/or arthroscopic chondral defect at the time of ACLR and/or secondary injury/surgery to ACLR knee) and cartilage defects defined on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), bone marrow lesions (BMLs), and meniscal lesions on patient-reported outcomes 1 to 5 years after ACLR.
METHODS: A total of 80 participants (50 men; mean ± SD age 32 ± 14 years) completed the Knee Injury a

BACKGROUND: Prior to the annual National Football League (NFL) Draft, the top college football prospects are evaluated by medical personnel from each team at the NFL Scouting Combine. On the basis of these evaluations, each athlete is assigned an orthopaedic grade from the medical staff of each club, which aims to predict the impact of an athlete's injury history on his ability to participate in the NFL.
PURPOSE: (1) To identify clinical predictors of signs, symptoms, and subsequent professional participation associated with football-related injuries identified at the NFL Combine and (2) to a

INTRODUCTION: Subchondral bone cysts (SBC) have been identified in patients with knee osteoarthritis (OA) as a cause of greater pain, loss of cartilage and increased chance of joint replacement surgery. Few studies monitor SBC longitudinally, and clinical research using three-dimensional imaging techniques, such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), is limited to retrospective analyses as SBC are identified within an OA patient cohort. The purpose of this study was to use dual-modality, preclinical imaging to monitor the initiation and progression of SBC occurring within an established rodent m

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: Arthroscopic treatment of tibial plateau fractures may reduce morbidity compared to open articular surgery. But bony fixation is necessarily percutaneous and minimal. The purpose of our study was not only to assess immediate results but also long term functional and anatomic results after arthroscopic treatment of tibial plateau fractures, with special reference to radiographical results.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twenty-six patients (mean age 42 years, range 18 to 70 years, 17 men, 9 women) were arthroscopically treated for a fresh tibial plateau fracture. According to Scha

Background: It is known that meniscus root tears affect the biomechanics of the knee in a way that is equivalent to a total meniscectomy. Therefore, repair is increasingly favored for meniscal root tears. In our study, we aimed to investigate the clinical and radiological outcomes of meniscal root repairs with suture anchors. Materials and Methods: Patients who had undergone surgery for medial meniscus posterior root tear (MMPRT) using suture-anchors between 2018 and 2023 were retrospectively analyzed. Patients were excluded if they had a previous infection, a fracture and an operation on the

BACKGROUND: Donor-recipient sex mismatch for tissue and organ transplantation has been shown to negatively affect outcomes.
PURPOSE: To analyze the effect of sex mismatching on outcomes after meniscal allograft transplantation (MAT) and to determine if there is an association between the sex of the recipient and the sex of the donor and how this affects clinically significant outcome (CSO), reoperation, and failure rates after primary MAT.
STUDY DESIGN: Case series; Level of evidence, 4.
METHODS: Between 2003 and 2022, patients who underwent MAT were prospectively followed, with the inclusi

BACKGROUND: Degenerative medial meniscus tears are a common pathology in the general population. Recent randomized trials demonstrated non-superiority of arthroscopic partial meniscectomy over conservative management. However, there is a paucity of information regarding the outcomes of combined conservative treatments.
HYPOTHESIS: It was hypothesized that combined intra- and perimeniscal corticosteroid injections with structured physiotherapy, for degenerative medial meniscus tears, would result in high surgery-free and second injection-free survivorship.
METHODS: A retrospective review of 6

BACKGROUND: Due to difficult-to-access location and complex tear patterns, the management of meniscus injuries in isolation and in conjunction with anterior cruciate ligament injury may be challenging. The aim of this video is to present techniques and tips that may help surgeons perform arthroscopic all-inside repair of complex meniscus tears.
INDICATIONS: Indications for the presented repair techniques are young patients with high activity demands, symptomatic lateral and medial meniscus lesions, ligamentous knee instability, chondral changes grade 2 or less, neutral joint alignment, and bo

BACKGROUND: Injuries to the articular cartilage of the knee often fail to heal properly due to the hypocellular and avascular nature of this tissue. Subsequent disability can limit participation in sports and decrease quality of life. Subchondral bone perforations are used for the treatment of small defects. Filling out the central portion in larger lesions becomes difficult, and scaffolds can be used as adjuvants, providing a matrix onto which the defect can be filled in completely. Also, autogenous cartilage grafts can be combined, acting as an inducer and improving healing quality, all in a

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most prevalent degenerative joint disease in animals and humans. It is characterized by pain, articular cartilage damage and joint stiffness. It has been suggested that the status of the subchondral bone compartment plays an important role in the initiation and progression of OA. Bisphosphonates have been proposed as a potential disease-modifying treatment for OA, however their effectiveness is not yet clear. Twenty-four male adult New Zealand rabbits were used to evaluate the effects of risedronate on the subchondral bone quality and cartilage degradation in a long-

INTRODUCTION: Approximately 10% of men and 13% of women older than the age of 60 are affected by symptomatic osteoarthritis of the knee. Anatomic repair or reconstruction after knee injury has been a central tenet of surgical treatment to reduce the risk of osteoarthritis. The purpose of this study was to examine common sports medicine procedures of the knee and determine the proportion of patients who subsequently undergo total knee arthroplasty (TKA).
METHODS: The MarketScan database was queried from the period of January 2007 through December 2016. Patients were identified, who underwent a

OBJECTIVE: Aging and obesity contribute to the initiation and progression of osteoarthritis with little information on their relation to gene expression in joint tissues, particularly the meniscus. Here, we test the hypothesis that patient age and body mass index (BMI) correlate with the expression of osteoarthritis- and obesity-related gene signatures in the meniscus.
DESIGN: Meniscus was obtained from patients (N=68) undergoing arthroscopic partial meniscectomy. The mRNA expression of 24 osteoarthritis-related and 4 obesity-related genes in meniscus was assessed by quantitative real-time PC

PURPOSE: Avascular necrosis of the knee following arthroscopic surgery has been described. The purpose of this article is to report a large series of patients who developed avascular necrosis after arthroscopy of the knee in an effort to delineate casual factors and results of treatment.
TYPE OF STUDY: Case series.
METHODS AND MATERIALS: The charts, radiographs, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans of patients who developed osteonecrosis (ON) of the knee after routine arthroscopic surgery were reviewed. Only those patients with no evidence of ON on preoperative MRI performed 6 weeks or

INTRODUCTION: Beside other advantages that arthroscopic surgery has, comparing to the open surgery, there is one more--the risk of complications is present but a very little. The aim of this work is to present complications that we have had and to point at possibilities how to prevent and treat them.
MATERIAL, METHODS AND RESULTS: In the period from September 1990 to December 1998, 1071 arthroscopic surgeries were performed in our hospital. 817 patients (76%) were male and 254 (24%) female, average age 30.63 (12-69). Left knee was involved in 560, while the right in 511 cases. Among all arthr

PURPOSE: To characterize tibiofemoral contact mechanics in a rat knee under progressive varus loading, evaluate whether a statistical shape and appearance model (SSAM) can reproduce specimen-specific biomechanical behavior, and assess whether this meniscus-deficient computational-experimental framework can serve as a controlled preclinical platform for studying load redistribution.
METHODS: Three-dimensional rat knee models were reconstructed from micro-CT images of 10 hind limbs from 5 male Sprague Dawley rats. Each limb model was alternately designated as the target, while the remaining lim
