Conjunctival flora of clinically normal and diseased turtles and tortoises.

BACKGROUND: In captive breed turtles and tortoises conjunctival disease is common. Our aim was to investigate the bacterial and fungal flora present in the eyes of healthy and pathological chelonians and to compare findings in turtles with those in tortoises. RESULTS: Samples were taken from the conjunctival sacs of 34, diseased and healthy, chelonians (18 tortoises and 16 turtles) and submitted to bacterial and fungal investigation. All samples showed bacterial growth. Thirteen animals (38%), harboured a single bacterial species as sole isolate and twenty-one animals (62%) harboured more tha

Molecular epidemiological studies on avian pathogenic Escherichia coli associated with septicemia in chickens in India.

Bacterial septicemia causes huge economic losses in the poultry industry and there is no systematic research available in India on the connection of various pathogens associated with septicemia. The present molecular epidemiological study was conducted to investigate the association of different bacterial and immunosuppressive viral pathogens in septicemia suspected chickens. A total of 443 chicken carcasses with septicemic conditions from 71 different flocks were included in this study. Heart blood swabs were subjected to bacterial culture for Salmonella spp., Pasteurella multocida, Escherich

Body Imaging of Bacterial and Parasitic Zoonoses: Keys to Diagnosis.

Zoonotic infections, which are transmitted from animals to humans, have been a substantial source of human disease since antiquity. As the human population continues to grow and human influence on the planet expands, humans frequently encounter both domestic and wild animals. This has only increased as deforestation, urbanization, agriculture, habitat fragmentation, outdoor recreation, and international travel evolve in modern society, all of which have resulted in the emergence and reemergence of zoonotic infections. Zoonotic infections pose a diagnostic challenge because of their nonspecific

The evaluation of immunogenic impact of selected bacterial, recombinant Hsp60 antigens in DBA/2J mice.

Heat Shock Proteins (HSP) are highly conserved proteins that are widely spread throughout all organisms. They function in the cytoplasm as chaperones; however, they could be expressed on the cell surface. It has been shown that Hsp60 obtained from gram-negative bacteria are able to stimulate cells of the acquired and innate immune system. The aim of this study was the evaluation of the immunogenic properties of recombinant Hsp60 proteins derived from four common pathogenic bacteria: Escherichia coli, Histophilus somni, Pasteurella multocida and Salmonella Enteritidis. The analysis of the humor

Recent progress in novel macrolides, quinolones, and 2-pyridones to overcome bacterial resistance.

Macrolides, such as clarithromycin and azithromycin, having good activity against pathogens such as Legionella, Chlamydia, Campylobacter spp, Branhamella spp, Pasteurella multocida and streptococci, have gained wide acceptance for the treatment of both upper and lower respiratory tracts, as well as cutaneous infections. Emergence of bacterial resistance, particularly in gram-positive bacteria, has been observed. Macrolide-resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae and S. pyogenes are found in France and many other countries, resulting in failure of therapy for pneumonia, pharyngitis, and skin infectio

Dog, cat, and human bites: a review.

It is estimated that half of all Americans will be bitten by an animal or another human being during their lifetimes. The vast majority of the estimated 2 million annual mammalian bite wounds are minor, and the victims never seek medical attention. Nonetheless, bite wounds account for approximately 1% of all emergency department visits and more than $30 million in annual health care costs. Infection is the most common bite-associated complication; the relative risk is determined by the species of the inflicting animal, bite location, host factors, and local wound care. Most infections caused b

Pathogen detection and microbial community characterization in clinically symptomatic pigs from commercial farms.

Effective swine disease control requires continuous monitoring of major pathogens and a comprehensive understanding of microbial community dynamics under disease conditions. Here, we collected lung, oral fluid, and fecal samples from clinically symptomatic pigs on commercial farms in South Korea. Molecular diagnostics targeting major respiratory and enteric pathogens were performed to assess infection status, alongside 16S rRNA gene sequencing to simultaneously characterize respiratory and enteric microbiota. Most respiratory pathogens were detected at higher rates in oral fluid than in lung s

A bighorn sheep die-off in southern Colorado involving a Pasteurellaceae strain that may have originated from syntopic cattle.

We investigated a pasteurellosis epizootic in free-ranging bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis) wherein a Pasteurellaceae strain carried by syntopic cattle (Bos taurus) under severe winter conditions appeared to contribute to pneumonia in affected bighorns. Twenty-one moribund or dead bighorn sheep were found on the "Fossil Ridge" herd's winter range, Colorado, USA, between 13 December 2007 and 29 February 2008. Eight carcasses examined showed gross or microscopic evidence of acute to subacute fibrinous bronchopneumonia. All eight carcasses yielded at least one β-hemolytic Mannheimia haemolytica bi
