Systemic and maxillofacial characteristics of patients with Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome not treated with glossectomy.

INTRODUCTION: Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome (BWS) is a genetic disorder characterized by exomphalos, macroglossia and gigantism. Previous studies reported a wide variation in the skeletal and occlusal characteristics in individuals affected by BWS. However, these studies were performed by analyzing both individuals who had and those had not received a glossectomy, which has a high impact on the jaw growth and occlusion. To highlight the intrinsic characteristics of BWS, 7 Japanese affected individuals without glossectomy were analyzed in this study. METHODS: Seven individuals who had been diagn

Cephalometric assessment of cranial abnormalities in patients with acromegaly.

OBJECTIVE AND PATIENTS: Patients with acromegaly (12 women, 26 men) and a control group (36 women, 50 men) were chosen for cephalometry to assess the size, shape and positional characteristics of the craniofacial bones and the upper airways. RESULTS: When compared with the controls, patients of both sexes with acromegaly were found to have significant anomalies in the orofacial skeleton: increased facial height, elongated ascending ramus mandibulae and greater basion-supramentale distance, a negative difference between maxillary and mandibular protrusions, enlarged lower part of the gonion an

Thin-plate spline (TPS) graphical analysis of the mandible on cephalometric radiographs.

We describe two cases of Class III malocclusion with and without orthodontic treatment. A thin-plate spline (TPS) analysis of lateral cephalometric radiographs was used to visualize transformations of the mandible. The actual sites of mandibular skeletal change are not detectable with conventional cephalometric analysis. These case analyses indicate that specific patterns of mandibular transformation are associated with Class III malocclusion with or without orthopaedic therapy, and visualization of these deformations is feasible using TPS graphical analysis.

The language capability of Neanderthal man.

Considerable publicity has been given a recent article by Lieberman and Crelin ('71) which argues that Neanderthal man lacked the physical features necessary for speech. This present paper presents statistics on some modern men with normal speech who show physical features in common with Neanderthal man. The brain of Neanderthal man was as large as, or larger than, that of modern man. The brain reflected by endocranial cast of the La Chapelle-aux-Saints skull resembles that of modern man in an area important for speech and therapy suggests Neanderthal man had the neural development necessary f

Dental Implantology in Acromegaly: Pathophysiological Challenges, Biomaterial Interactions, and Future Directions-A Narrative Review.

INTRODUCTION: Acromegaly is a chronic endocrine disorder caused by excessive secretion of growth hormone (GH) and insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1). Acromegaly leads to a wide range of systemic alterations, including metabolic disturbances, abnormalities in bone microarchitecture, soft tissue overgrowth, and morphological changes in the maxilla and mandible. All these factors may significantly complicate the planning and success of implant therapy. STUDY AIM: This narrative review aimed to critically analyze the impact of acromegaly on bone healing and osseointegration, with particular emp

Functional morphology and ultrastructure of the mouth apparatus in the freshwater mite larvae Limnochares aquatica (L., 1758) (Acariformes, Limnocharidae).

The mouth apparatus in larvae of the freshwater mite Limnochares aquatica (L., 1758) (Acariformes, Limnocharidae), belonging to the lower Hydrachnidia, was studied with light microscopy, scanning (SEM) and transmission (TEM) electron microscopy, as well as with confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) to reveal its main morphological and functional characteristics. The gnathosoma, functioning as a mouth organ takes a prognathous position, and inclines to the body axial line at the angle of around 30°. The gnathosoma is composed of segments of the two pairs of anterior appendages and their der

Mandibular Spatial Reorientation and Morphological Alteration of Crouzon and Apert Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: From infancy to adulthood, the mandible develops increased ramus height, prominence of the chin, and laterally widened gonial angles. In Crouzon and Apert syndromes, both relative retrognathia and prognathic jaws have been reported. Growth is influenced by a variety of factors, including the growth and relative position of the skull base, functional coordination, and the spatial influence of the laryngopharynx. Thus, this study aimed to explore in detail the evolution of the mandible in both syndromes and its relationship with the entire facial structure and skull base. METHODS: O

Nasomaxillary hypoplasia with a congenitally missing tooth treated with LeFort II osteotomy, autotransplantation, and nickel-titanium alloy wire.

INTRODUCTION: In some skeletal Class III adult patients with nasomaxillary hypoplasia, the LeFort I osteotomy provides insufficient correction. This case report describes a 20-year-old woman with a combination of nasomaxillary hypoplasia and a protrusive mandible with a congenitally missing mandibular second premolar. METHODS: We performed a LeFort II osteotomy for maxillary advancement. Autotransplantation of a tooth was also performed; the donor tooth was used to replace the missing permanent tooth. To increase the chance of success, we applied light continuous force with an improved supere

An efficient biomechanical approach for the management of an impacted maxillary central incisor.

Treatment of an impacted maxillary central incisor poses a unique challenge to the orthodontist because of its position within the esthetic zone, requiring careful management of the soft tissues and an effective biomechanical setup for alignment. This article describes a novel method of extending an extrusion wire from cross tubes attached on the base archwire for forced eruption of impacted central incisors. The effectiveness and versatility of this method are demonstrated with 2 patients.

Skeletal Class III and anterior open bite treatment with different retention protocols: a report of three cases.

The treatment of skeletal class III and anterior open bite can be unstable and orthodontists frequently observe relapse. Here, we report on the management of three patients with skeletal class III profiles and open bites treated by orthodontic camouflage. Each received a retention protocol involving the use of two separate appliances during the night and day accompanied by myofunctional therapy. Long-term follow-up revealed a stable outcome.

Anterior open bite--simplified non surgical technique to correct in adults.

Skeletal Anterior open bite abnormality in adults is probably the most difficult to correct in orthodontics just behind Skeletal Class III abnormality. Literature research shows various techniques to correct this problem, often via orthognathic surgery, but it was difficult to find in the literatures a simplified non-surgical technique. This author propose, a simplified, non-surgical technique to correct skeletal anterior open bite in adults using non-ligating, frictionless brackets and vertical elastics. Some indications and contra-indications will be discussed

Surgical Accuracy of 3D Virtual Surgery and CAD/CAM-Assisted Orthognathic Surgery for Skeletal Class III Patients.

Orthognathic surgery is an effective surgical method to achieve functionality and facial esthetics for mandibular prognathism. If surgery is performed with a conventional method, errors may occur in the surgical preparation process and the surgical procedures, and there is a limitation in that the accuracy of surgery is determined according to the surgeon's experience and tactual sense. However, with the recent development of three-dimensional (3D) virtual planning and CAD/CAM technology, more 3D and predictable surgical planning and more accurate and time-saving surgery have become possible.
