With the use of circulating norepinephrine (NE) and epinephrine (E) levels, the sympathoadrenal activity as well as its local modulation by adrenoceptors were studied in normotensive (NT) and DOCA-salt hypertensive (HT) rats. The cardiovascular effects of catecholamines intrathecally (i.t.) injected at the T12-L1 level were analyzed in pentobarbital anesthetized rats. Pharmacological actions of (N-dicyclopropylmethyl)-amino-2-oxazoline (S 3341), an agonist of alpha-2 adrenoceptors, were examined in acute animal studies. In the normotensive anaesthetized dog S 3341 (0.3 mg/kg, i.v.) produced an initial transient increase followed by a marked, prolonged fall in mean arterial pressure (MAP) of 20 mmHg.
