Rhinal cortex removal produces amnesia for preoperatively learned discrimination problems but fails to disrupt postoperative acquisition and retention in rhesus monkeys.

To test whether the rhinal cortex (i.e., entorhinal and perirhinal cortex) plays a time-limited role in information storage, eight rhesus monkeys were trained to criterion on two sets of 60 object discrimination problems, one set at each of two different time periods separated by 15 weeks. After the monkeys had learned both sets, two groups balanced for preoperative acquisition rates were formed. One group received bilateral ablation of the rhinal cortex (n = 4), and the other was retained as an unoperated control group (n = 4). After a 2 week rest period, monkeys were assessed for retention o

Effect of the pre-training administration of beta-endorphin, leucine-, methionine- and [des-Tyr1] methionine-enkephalin on the acquisition and retention of a shuttle avoidance response by rats.

1. Intraperitoneal administration of beta-endorphin, leucine-, methionine- and [des-Tyr1] methionine-enkephalin 5 min prior to a 50-trial training session of shuttle avoidance conditioning in rats depressed avoidance performance both in the training session and in a retention test carried out after 24 h. All four peptides therefore depress both acquisition and retention of shuttle avoidance behavior. 2. There were, however, differences in sensitivity to the two effects of the peptides. Whereas the enkephalins depressed both acquisition and retention at the lowest dose tested (0.32 micrograms/k

Treating dysarthria following traumatic brain injury: investigating the benefits of commencing treatment during post-traumatic amnesia in two participants.

PRIMARY OBJECTIVE: The aims of this preliminary study were to explore the suitability for and benefits of commencing dysarthria treatment for people with traumatic brain injury (TBI) while in post-traumatic amnesia (PTA). It was hypothesized that behaviours in PTA don't preclude participation and dysarthria characteristics would improve post-treatment. RESEARCH DESIGN: A series of comprehensive case analyses. METHODS AND PROCEDURES: Two participants with severe TBI received dysarthria treatment focused on motor speech deficits until emergence from PTA. A checklist of neurobehavioural sequela

Hippocampus and medial prefrontal cortex contributions to trace and contextual fear memory expression over time.

Previous work has shown that damage to the dorsal hippocampus (DH) occurring at recent, but not remote, timepoints following acquisition produces a deficit in trace conditioned fear memory expression. The opposite pattern has been observed with lesions to the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC). The present studies address: (1) whether these lesion effects are observable within 30 d of training; (2) whether lesions of the ventral hippocampus (VH) produce temporally graded retrograde amnesia similar to DH lesions; and (3) whether the lesion-to-test interval critically contributes to these lesion de

[Self-reference effect and episodic memory in normal aging and Alzheimer's disease: myth or reality?].

The Self is defined as a dynamic structure of self-referent-cognitive processes and a set of multidimensional representations stored in memory. This paper aims to explore the links between the Self and memorization of information, thus we propose to review the Self-reference effect (SRE) on memory processes and its neural basis in young and older adults. The literature reports a strong benefit from self-referencing on the encoding and retrieval processes in episodic memory. Indeed, the individuals demonstrate a better retention of information previously processed in relation with their preexis

Percutaneous transretroperitoneal direct approach to occlude a major shunt in a patient with extrahepatic portal-systemic encephalopathy.

A 73-year-old woman had sudden dystrophy and amnesia in our hospital. Her serum ammonia level was high. Marked collateral vessels from the splenic vein to the left renal vein around the spleen were seen on a computed tomography (CT) scan with contrast enhancement. An abdominal angiogram showed that the direction of the splenic vein was hepatofugal on superior mesenteric arterial portography, with a marked splenorenal shunt on splenic arterial portography. Hepatic encephalopathy due to a marked extrahepatic portal-systemic shunt was diagnosed. Transjugular retrograde obliteration (TJO) was atte

Ophthalmic consequences of mid-facial trauma.

Fractures of the mid-face are commonly accompanied by injury to the visual system. Three hundred and sixty three patients who had sustained mid-facial fractures were assessed prospectively for evidence of such injury. The data have been used to devise a scoring system for the maxillofacial surgeon in order to help identify those patients at risk of eye injury. The scoring system has been evaluated on a further cohort of 100 patients with a similar spectrum of injury and the sensitivity and specificity of the system have been determined. The results of these studies have been reported in the ma

The influence of adrenergic receptor antagonists on the amnestic and antiamnestic actions of adrenaline and tyramine.

The posttraining IP administration of adrenaline (epinephrine) HCl (5.0 micrograms/kg) or tyramine HCl (1.0 mg/kg) causes retrograde amnesia for a one-way step-down inhibitory avoidance task in rats. The effect is cancelled by the simultaneous injection of the alpha 2-adrenergic receptor antagonist yohimbine HCl (2.0 mg/kg) or of the beta 1 - beta 2 blocker propranolol HCl (2.0 mg/kg). The amnestic effect of posttraining adrenaline or tyramine is counteracted by the administration of adrenaline or tyramine prior to testing: each drug has a greater antiamnestic effect against itself than agains

Sport-Related Structural Brain Injury in High School Soccer: Epidural Hemorrhage After a "Header".

BACKGROUND: Sports-related structural brain injury (SRSBI) is a rare, but potentially catastrophic, injury. Limited data exist outlining its epidemiology, pathophysiology, and outcomes. We have presented a case of an epidural hematoma (EDH) that occurred during a high school soccer game. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 16-year-old boy had experienced a head-to-ball collision and head-to-head collision with another player. He denied loss of consciousness, endorsed retrograde amnesia, and complained of a minor headache. On the sidelines, he subsequently passed brief orientation and physical exertion tests.

Cognitive trajectories during and after electroconvulsive therapy in patients with MDE: Taking different perspectives.

Cognitive function during an ECT care pathway is mainly investigated at the group level by analyzing mean cognitive test scores over time. However, there are important inter-individual differences, with some patients experiencing residual invalidating cognitive deficits. This study provides a nuanced examination of cognitive functioning during and after ECT by combining three approaches for data analysis. A cognitive test battery was assessed in seventy-three ECT-treated patients with a Major Depressive Episode (MDE) at up to five time points (baseline, immediately prior to the third session a

The role of medial temporal lobe in retrieving spatial and nonspatial relations from episodic and semantic memory.

This study examined the involvement of medial temporal lobe, especially the hippocampus, in processing spatial and nonspatial relations using episodic and semantic versions of a relational judgment task. Participants studied object arrays and were tested on different types of relations between pairs of objects. Three prevalent views of hippocampal function were considered. Cognitive map theory (O'Keefe and Nadel (1978) The Hippocampus as a Cognitive Map. USA: Oxford University Press) emphasizes hippocampal involvement in spatial relational tasks. Multiple trace theory (Nadel and Moscovitch (19

Time-dependent reorganization of brain circuitry underlying long-term memory storage.

Retrograde amnesia observed following hippocampal lesions in humans and animals is typically temporally graded, with recent memory being impaired while remote memories remain intact, indicating that the hippocampal formation has a time-limited role in memory storage. However, this claim remains controversial because studies involving hippocampal lesions tell us nothing about the contribution of the hippocampus to memory storage if this region was present at the time of memory retrieval. We therefore used non-invasive functional brain imaging using (14C)2-deoxyglucose uptake to examine how the

[Neuropathology of amnesic syndromes in man].

Controversies exist about the type of lesions observed in Korsakoff's syndrome or amnestic syndromes. A review of clinicopathologic data in the literature and findings in a personal series of 31 patients with amnestic syndromes (14 with alcoholism and nutritional deficiency, 8 with tumors including 2 with craniopharyngiomas, 5 with Pick's disease and presbyophrenic manifestations, 2 with vascular affections and one each with anoxia and herpetic encephalitis) were used to determine most frequently responsible lesions. Although it is generally accepted that there must be bilateral lesions diverg

Ultrasound evaluation of internal jugular valve incompetence (IJVI) in Egyptian patients with idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH).

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) is a clinical syndrome with no identified causative factor. Internal jugular valve incompetence (IJVI) has been linked to many neurological disorders such as idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH), transient global amnesia and cough-induced headache. Intact valves prevent efficiently retrograde flow into the internal jugular vein. AIM: The aim of this study is to evaluate the competence of the jugular vein valves and its relationship to age, BMI, opening CSF pressure and MRV findings in IIH patients. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Twenty-five

A mathematical model of aging-related and cortisol induced hippocampal dysfunction.

BACKGROUND: The hippocampus is essential for declarative memory synthesis and is a core pathological substrate for Alzheimer's disease (AD), the most common aging-related dementing disease. Acute increases in plasma cortisol are associated with transient hippocampal inhibition and retrograde amnesia, while chronic cortisol elevation is associated with hippocampal atrophy. Thus, cortisol levels could be monitored and managed in older people, to decrease their risk of AD type hippocampal dysfunction. We generated an in silicomodel of the chronic effects of elevated plasma cortisol on hippocampal
