Tart Cherry Supplement Enhances Skeletal Muscle Glutathione Peroxidase Expression and Functional Recovery after Muscle Damage.

INTRODUCTION: Montmorency cherry concentrate (MCC) supplementation enhances functional recovery from exercise, potentially due to antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. However, to date, supporting empirical evidence for these mechanistic hypotheses is reliant on indirect blood biomarkers. This study is the first to investigate functional recovery from exercise alongside molecular changes within the exercised muscle after MCC supplementation. METHODS: Ten participants completed two maximal unilateral eccentric knee extension trials after MCC or placebo (PLA) supplementation for 7 d before

Paradoxical effects of adenosine receptor ligands on hydroxyl radical generation by L-DOPA in the rat striatum.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder associated with selective loss of dopaminergic neurons in substantia nigra pars compacta. Among the proposed mechanisms of dopaminergic degeneration, oxidative stress is believed to play an important role. On the other hand, L-DOPA used as the main medication in PD and overproduction of dopamine (DA) in striatal neurons could elicit toxic effects due to formation of free radicals (FRs). Adenosine, an endogenous neuromodulator was shown in various experimental models to have neuroprotective properties. In our study, we investi

Protocatechuic acid attenuates intestinal inflammation through TLR4/p38 and NF-κB pathways in heat-stressed broilers.

Protocatechuic acid (PCA), a major active component found in Eucommia ulmoides Oliver, is involved in regulating oxidative stress and inflammation. Heat stress poses a significant threat to the poultry industry. In this study, we investigated the protective effect of PCA on intestinal homeostasis under heat stress. Our results indicated that PCA improved the growth performance of broilers during heat stress. Furthermore, PCA mitigated jejunal damage and attenuated the upregulation of inflammatory mediators, including TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-1β, triggered by heat stress. Concurrently, it restored t

Protocatechuic acid attenuates isoproterenol-induced cardiac hypertrophy via downregulation of ROCK1-Sp1-PKCγ axis.

Cardiac hypertrophy is an adaptive response of the myocardium to pressure overload or adrenergic agonists. Here, we investigated the protective effects and the regulatory mechanism of protocatechuic acid, a phenolic compound, using a mouse model of isoproterenol-induced cardiac hypertrophy. Our results demonstrated that protocatechuic acid treatment significantly downregulated the expression of cardiac hypertrophic markers (Nppa, Nppb, and Myh7), cardiomyocyte size, heart weight to body weight ratio, cross-sectional area, and thickness of left ventricular septum and posterior wall. Targeting HMGB1/TLR4/NF-κB signaling pathway by protocatechuic acid protects against l-arginine induced acute pancreatitis and multiple organs injury in rats.

Acute pancreatitis (AP) is a common pancreatic inflammation associated with substantial morbidity and mortality. AP may be mild or severe which can spread systemically causing multiple organs failure (MOF) and even death. In the current study, protocatechuic acid (PCA), a natural phenolic acid, was investigated for its possible protective potential against L-arginine induced AP and multiple organs injury (MOI) in rats. AP was induced by L-arginine (500 mg/100 g, ip). Two dose levels of PCA were tested (50 and 100 mg/kg, oral, 10 days before L-arginine injection). PCA successfully protected aga
