Trauma and "spiritual resilience" among Internally Displaced Women (IDW) victims of violence in the commune of Dédougou, Burkina Faso.

CONTEXT: Since 2015, Burkina Faso has been ravaged by the violence of armed terrorist groups (JNIM, EIGS), resulting in over 2 million internally displaced persons. In the Boucle du Mouhoun region, 63.17% of internally displaced persons (IDPs) are women (84,649 out of 133,994 in 2023). As prime targets of armed conflict, they suffer multifaceted violence used as a weapon of psychological warfare against communities. METHODS: The study uses a convergent mixed-methods design conducted in October 2023 in the commune of Dédougou. The total sample size is 1,056 participants, including 1,015 IDPs s

Feasibility and Safety of Somato-Cognitive Coordination Therapy for Cerebellar Ataxia Following Pediatric Brain Tumor Treatment.

BACKGROUND: Cerebellar ataxia after pediatric brain tumor treatment can cause persistent gait, balance, and speech impairment, yet no established rehabilitation strategy exists. Somato-cognitive coordination therapy (SCCT) is a virtual reality-guided intervention designed to promote sensorimotor integration through visually constrained reaching tasks. We evaluated the safety, feasibility, and preliminary functional observations of SCCT in this population. METHODS: This single-center retrospective pilot study included 12 consecutive pediatric patients with cerebellar ataxia following brain tum

Dimensional and Network Architecture of Catatonia in Schizophrenia Spectrum Disorders and Mood Disorders: Evidence from a Large, Deeply Phenotyped Sample.

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Catatonia is a transdiagnostic syndrome in schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSD) and mood disorders (MOD), but both its empirical structure and the frequency of its signs and symptoms remain insufficiently understood. STUDY DESIGN: We examined 465 patients with SSD or MOD from Mannheim (Germany) and Bern (Switzerland) using the 40-item Northoff Catatonia Rating Scale (NCRS); 336 patients were additionally assessed with the Bush-Francis Catatonia Rating Scale (BFCRS). We examined the frequency of catatonia signs and symptoms across subthreshold and syndromal present

Prospective Study of Different Diagnostic Criteria for Catatonia and Delirium in Internal Medicine and Neurology Admissions.

OBJECTIVE: The authors prospectively examined the relationship between catatonia and delirium in consecutive hospital admissions. Potentially confounding neuropsychiatric conditions for catatonia symptoms were also assessed. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study of 223 geriatric inpatients with or without delirium, the authors rated symptoms with Bush-Francis Catatonia Rating Scale (BFCRS) items to diagnose catatonia according to the BFCRS, DSM-5-TR, and Research Diagnostic Criteria for Catatonia (RDCC). The Delirium Rating Scale-Revised-98 (DRS-R-98) and other tools were used to assess neur

Electroencephalographic outcomes and predictors of epilepsy in autoimmune encephalitis.

BACKGROUND: An abnormal EEG is pivotal in diagnosis, exclusion of mimickers and prognosticating epilepsy in Autoimmune Encephalitis (AE). However, little is known about the short and long term electroencephalographic outcomes and predictors of epilepsy in AE. This study aims to describe the seizure characteristics and electrophysiological markers of various AE subtypes and assess the clinical and electrophysiological predictors of autoimmune epilepsy. METHODS: Clinical features and EEGs in 74 patients (acute phase=39 and post-acute phase defined after a minimum eight weeks after acute phase=3

Sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in adults over 80 years: a 10-year review of United Kingdom surveillance.

INTRODUCTION: Sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (sCJD) is a rapidly progressive neurodegenerative disease with public health implications. Mean age of onset is 68 years. Age-specific incidence declines after 80 years. This may arise from under-ascertainment or other biological features of the disease. Accurate characterisation of late-onset sCJD is important for early diagnosis, avoiding unnecessary investigations and improving ascertainment for public health purposes. OBJECTIVE: To phenotype the clinical features and investigation profile of sCJD in adults >80 years. METHODS: We analysed a

Gender differences in clinical presentation and illicit substance use during first episode psychosis: a natural language processing, electronic case register study.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether gender differences in symptom presentation at first episode psychosis (FEP) remain even when controlling for substance use, age and ethnicity, using natural language processing applied to electronic health records (EHRs). DESIGN, SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: Data were extracted from EHRs of 3350 people (62% male patients) who had presented to the South London and Maudsley NHS Trust with a FEP between 1 April 2007 and 31 March 2017. Logistic regression was used to examine gender differences in the presentation of positive, negative, depressive, mania and disorganis

Clinicopathological features and microsurgical outcomes for giant pediatric intracranial tumor in 60 consecutive cases.

PURPOSE: Giant pediatric intracranial tumor (GPIT) remains to be a challenging disease with high morbidity and mortality. METHODS: The clinical data of 60 patients under 18 years of age operated on with GPIT (≥5 cm in diameter) were retrospectively analyzed. RESULTS: Gross total resection was achieved in 46 cases (77%) and subtotal resection was obtained in 14 cases (23%). Ninety percent (47/52) of the cases with obstructive hydrocephalus were resolved remarkably and only 10% (5/52) of the patients needed a ventriculoperitoneal shunt after tumor resection. Variability in diagnosing Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease using standard and proposed diagnostic criteria.

INTRODUCTION: Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) is a rapidly progressive dementia with a median survival of 2-14 months. The diagnosis can only be made accurately by biopsy/autopsy. However, this is not always feasible or desirable. Thus, diagnostic criteria have been proposed by UCSF, European MRI-CJD Consortium, and WHO. We will compare these criteria. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Retrospective study of 31 patients (average age of 69.2 years) between 2003 to 2010 by ICD9 codes 046.1, 046.11, and 046.19. RESULTS: All patients presented with rapidly progressive dementia (mean duration of 4.25 months)

An autopsied case of V180I Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease presenting with panencephalopathic-type pathology and a characteristic prion protein type.

A 73-year-old Japanese woman showed slowly progressive aphasia, apraxia and dementia. She had no family history of prion disease or dementia. One year later she showed parkinsonism and corticobasal degeneration was initially suspected. On MRI, the left temporal neocortex seemed swollen on T2-weighted images in the initial stage, and a later high-signal intensity region was observed in the cerebral cortex in diffusion-weighted images. The patient developed myoclonus and an akinetic mutism state 15 months and 22 months after onset, respectively. Consecutive electroencephalography revealed no per

Presenilin 1 mutation in an african american family presenting with atypical Alzheimer dementia.

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer disease (AD) is characterized by memory and visuospatial deficits with relative sparing of personality. Mutations in 3 genes (presenilin 1 and 2 and amyloid precursor protein) are associated with presenile AD. Presenilin 1 gene mutations have not been described in African Americans. METHODS: We studied an African American family with autosomal dominant rapidly progressive dementia and psychosis occurring early in the fifth decade of life. We performed neurologic evaluations, psychometrics, and neuroimaging. We sequenced the amyloid precursor protein gene, presenilin 1 an

GJB2 mutations and additional disabilities in a pediatric cochlear implant population.

BACKGROUND: Children with severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss due to GJB2 mutations have often been deemed good cochlear implant candidates. Studies on children with GJB2 mutations and cochlear implants have typically excluded children with additional disabilities. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the presence of additional disabilities among children with and without GJB2 mutations in a cochlear implant population. METHODS: A retrospective chart review was performed of children with non-syndromic sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) who received a cochlear implant between 1993 and 2004. RE

An Autopsy Case of a Patient With Corticobasal Degeneration and a History of Acute Restlessness and Stupor.

Some patients with corticobasal degeneration (CBD) present with neuropsychiatric symptoms, including frontal lobe symptoms. However, stupor is rarely reported. Here, we report a case of acute restlessness at onset, which was clinically diagnosed as frontotemporal dementia (FTD) but was found to be CBD at autopsy. A 71-year-old woman with COVID-19 presented to our hospital. At the age of 62, she had suddenly become restless and confused without any preceding motor or psychiatric symptoms. She was treated with psychotropic drugs but subsequently entered stupor and was admitted to a psychiatric h

Sporadic adult-onset neuronal intranuclear inclusion disease without high-intensity signal on DWI and T2WI: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Neuronal intranuclear inclusion disease (NIID) is a rare neurodegenerative disease characterized by eosinophilic hyaline intranuclear inclusions in cells in the central and peripheral nervous system. High-intensity signal in the corticomedullary junction on diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) is supportive to the diagnosis of NIID. We describe a patient with sporadic adult-onset NIID but without any high-intensity signal on DWI and T2-weighted imaging (T2WI). CASE PRESENTATION: A 58-year-old woman without special family history developed mild persistent tremor in the right hand and d

[Progressive anarthria: an individual entity].

INTRODUCTION: First described 15 years ago, primary progressive anarthria is a focal cortical atrophy defined as a rare progressive impairment of speech associated with orofacial apraxia and leading to mutism with a frontal lobe syndrome. The aim of this study was to analyze clinical and neuropsychological data and results of complementary tests in a series of patients presented with primary progressive anarthria. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We, retrospectively, studied five patients with primary progressive anarthria. We particularly analyzed the following parameters: age at onset, age at the diag

[Clinicopathological characteristics of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease with a PrP V180I mutation and M129V polymorphism on different alleles].

We report an 80-year-old Japanese man with histologically-diagnosed Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD). The patient was admitted to our neurological unit because of sudden onset motor aphasia-like symptoms and right hemiparesis. His medical and family histories were unremarkable, and he had taken no medications. Urine, blood counts and blood chemistry were all within normal limits. Cerebrospinal fluid was normal except for elevation of neuron specific enolase (29.9 ng/ml). High-signal intensity was demonstrated in the cortex of the left temporal lobe on T2-weighted MRI images, and the lesion swel

Case Report: Atypical neuroleptic malignant syndrome induced by paliperidone palmitate-diagnostic challenges and clinical considerations.

Poor treatment adherence is common in schizophrenia and constitutes a major risk factor for relapse and clinical instability. Long-acting injectable (LAI) antipsychotics are frequently prescribed to mitigate this risk; however, their use can be associated with rare but serious adverse events, including neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS), with certain atypical presentations posing considerable diagnostic challenges. We report the case of a 51-year-old patient with schizophrenia who, during hospitalization for a psychotic relapse following prolonged refusal of all oral medications, received an
