Effects of muscarinic receptor modulators on ocular biometry of guinea pigs.

PURPOSE: This study investigated whether pilocarpine and cyclopentolate induce changes in ocular biometry of guinea pigs, in order to understand if guinea pigs have a similar response to these two agents as humans do. METHODS: Under general anaesthesia, refraction, axial components and surface curvature in various optical interfaces of the eye were measured in 10 guinea pigs (age of 2 weeks) at baseline (0 min) and different time points (5, 10, 20, 30, 60, 90 min) after topical administration of pilocarpine or cyclopentolate. The interval between the two drug treatments for the same animals w

Sympathetic ophthalmia following vitreoretinal surgery.

The objective is to discuss the characteristics of three patients who developed sympathetic ophthalmia following vitreoretinal surgery. The first case was a 29-year-old man who underwent placement of an encircling band, pars plana vitrectomy, foreign body removal, endolaser photocoagulation, transscleral cryotherapy, and silicone oil injection due to a retained foreign body 3 months after a corneoscleral rupture repair. He experienced visual loss in the fellow eye 2 months after the vitrectomy. An extensive exudative detachment was detected in the fellow eye. Sympathetic ophthalmia was diagnos

Stimulus-driven versus pilocarpine-induced biometric changes in pseudophakic eyes.

PURPOSE: Most trials that study the lens movement of accommodative intraocular lens (IOLs) use pilocarpine to stimulate ciliary muscle contraction. The aim of this study is to assess in vivo whether a more physiologic, stimulus-driven accommodation is comparable to pilocarpine-induced IOL movement. DESIGN: Controlled patient- and examiner-masked clinical trial. PARTICIPANTS: The study population included 38 eyes with accommodative IOL implants (1CU) and a control group of 28 eyes with conventional open-loop IOLs. METHODS: A high-precision biometry technique, partial coherence interferometry

Ocular leech infestation in a child.

PURPOSE: To describe a patient with manifestations of ocular leech infestation. METHOD: Case report. RESULTS: The ocular foreign body was identified as a leech, Limnatis nilotica, by parasitologic examination. The leech was extracted, and the patient began using topical antibiotic and cycloplegic agents. By the third day after extraction, the patient had no obvious symptoms or signs, except for a limited subconjunctival hemorrhage, and no epithelial defect on the cornea was observed. CONCLUSIONS: Ocular leech infestation should be considered in patients with a history of swimming in streams

Uveal effusion syndrome complicated by anterior ischemic optic neuropathy.

We report on a case of idiopathic uveal effusion syndrome complicated by AION. To our knowledge such an association hasn't been previously described. We suggest that scleral thickening caused obstruction of vortex veins followed by uveal effusion and compression of posterior ciliary arteries within their intrascleral tract, leading to AION. Nevertheless is can't be excluded that AION was the result of mechanical compression on ciliary vessels of optic disc by choroidal detachment.

Adie's syndrome: some new observations.

Adie's syndrome is a disease of unknown etiology. We known where the damage is, and which nerves are involved. We even know something of how the nerves react after the damage is done, but we don't known what causes the primary injury. The first step in working a jigsaw puzzle is to getall of the pieces right side up and take a good look at them. Some of the jigsaw pieces handled in this paper are listed below. Some of them are new observations; many of them are old concepts, partly modified and partly made secure by new facts. 1. Not all "tonic pupils" are due to "Adie's syndrome"; some are du

Predictive value of early treatment response for long-term outcomes after seven years on low-dose atropine.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: To determine whether first-year response to low-dose atropine predicts long-term myopia control and may guide treatment escalation in myopic children. METHODS: A retrospective chart review (2012-2025) identified children treated with atropine 0.01%-0.05% at a single practice with ≥54 months of treatment. Children were excluded with insufficient follow-up (<54 months of treatment), comorbidities that might affect myopia progression or concurrent baseline optical myopia-control therapy. First-year response was modelled as the spherical equivalent refraction (SER) progression ra

Development of a deep learning model to predict cycloplegic myopia and pre- myopia: based on a large-scale screening of school-aged children.

PURPOSE: This study aims to develop and validate practical deep learning (DL) and machine learning (ML) models to predict cycloplegic myopia, pre-myopia, and non-myopia in school-aged children using non-cycloplegic parameters, thereby facilitating early detection and intervention. METHODS: A cross-sectional study enrolled 3,077 children aged 6-10 years from Tianjin, China. Ocular parameters, including non-cycloplegic dioptre sphere (DS), axial length (AL), corneal curvature (K1, K2), and sex, were incorporated into four single multi-class classification models: CatBoost, XGBoost, Random Fores

Factors Affecting the Lifetime Cost of Myopia and the Impact of Active Myopia Treatments in Europe.

PURPOSE: There are an increasing number of effective myopia control options available; however, their financial impacts are unclear. We estimated lifetime costs of myopia under 5 scenarios in France and the United Kingdom (UK): traditional myopia management (single vision correction), low-dose atropine, anti-myopia spectacles, anti-myopia soft contact lenses, and orthokeratology. DESIGN: Model-based cost estimate. METHODS: Each modeled scenario began with an 8-year-old child presenting with -0.75 DS. Natural progression data were used to determine the likelihood of possible refractive outcom

Unusual presentation of subretinal cysticercosis with hypopyon uveitis.

Subretinal cysticercosis presenting with anterior uveitis and hypopyon is rare. A 7-year-old boy presented with pain and hypopyon in the right eye. Ultrasonography showed a cystic lesion with scolex. Because visual prognosis was poor, he was treated conservatively. Timely diagnosis would facilitate early therapy and prevent visual loss.

Pressure-induced stromal keratopathy as a result of ocular trauma after laser in situ keratomileusis.

IMPORTANCE: Pressure-induced stromal keratopathy is a rare kind of complication of laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) that may cause vision loss in affected eyes. Herein, we described the clinical features and treatment of 2 cases of pressure-induced stromal keratopathy due to traumatic hyphema in post-LASIK eyes. OBSERVATIONS: Two patients sought treatment for painful vision loss after blunt trauma on post-LASIK eyes. On examination, high intraocular pressure was found in the injured eyes. Hyphema was seen in the anterior chamber. High-resolution slitlamp biomicroscopy demonstrated interfa
