"Looking back to look forward": evaluation of a leadership program for prison staff designed to promote public health-focused culture change in US prisons.

PURPOSE: Prisons are associated with poor health outcomes for incarcerated people and correctional staff. Efforts to remedy harmful prison conditions typically focus on litigation, legislation and administrative policy changes; however, implementing these top-down mandates is often impeded by cultural barriers among prison staff. The purpose of this study was to evaluate a novel intervention grounded in public health and international correctional principles, to educate and motivate frontline prison staff to lead culture change initiatives in US prisons. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: Guided by

Genetic diversity and intercontinental dispersal of temperate and subarctic populations of Dibothriocephalus dendriticus (Cestoda; Diphyllobothriidea), a causative agent of dibothriocephalosis.

The diphyllobothriid tapeworm Dibothriocephalus dendriticus, one of the causative agents of the fish-borne zoonosis dibothriocephalosis, is mainly distributed in the Arctic/subarctic and temperate zones of the Northern Hemisphere (Europe, North America, and Asia), but also in the southern cone region of South America (Patagonia). The genetic structure and gene flow among 589 individuals of D. dendriticus, representing 20 populations, were studied using the mitochondrial cox1 gene as the first choice marker and 10 polymorphic nuclear microsatellite loci as a dominant molecular tool. The alcohol industry, the tobacco industry, and excise taxes in the US 1986-89: new insights from the tobacco documents.

BACKGROUND: The UCSF Industry Documents Library has provided public health researchers with key insights into the organization of political activities in the tobacco industry. Much less is known about the alcohol industry. In the US, there is some existing evidence of cooperation between the two industries, particularly in areas where there are mutual interests and/or policy goals at stake. Efforts to raise excise taxes on tobacco and alcohol products are one such example. METHODS: We systematically searched the UCSF Industry Documents Library for data on alcohol industry actors and their pol

Update and recommendations: Pharmacists' prescriptive authority for tobacco cessation medications in the United States.

To characterize state laws in the United States regarding the expansion of pharmacists' prescriptive authority for tobacco cessation medications, compare key components across different models, and discuss important considerations for states that are considering similar legislation or policies. Legislative language was reviewed and summarized for all states with pharmacist prescriptive authority for tobacco cessation medications, and state boards of pharmacy were contacted to determine the number of registered complaints or safety concerns received as a result of pharmacists' prescribing under

Unobtrusive Sensing Technology Detects Ecologically Valid Spatiotemporal Patterns of Daily Routines Distinctive to Persons With Mild Cognitive Impairment.

BACKGROUND: The ability to capture people's movement throughout their home is a powerful approach to inform spatiotemporal patterns of routines associated with cognitive impairment. The study estimated indoor room activities over 24 hours and investigated relationships between diurnal activity patterns and mild cognitive impairment (MCI). METHODS: One hundred and sixty-one older adults (26 with MCI) living alone (age = 78.9 ± 9.2) were included from 2 study cohorts-the Oregon Center for Aging & Technology and the Minority Aging Research Study. Indoor room activities were measured by the numbe

Working your SOCS off: The role of ASB10 and protein degradation pathways in glaucoma.

Evidence is accumulating to suggest that mutations in the Ankyrin and SOCS Box-containing protein-10 (ASB10) gene are associated with glaucoma. Since its identification in a large Oregon family with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG), ASB10 variants have been associated with disease in US, German and Pakistani cohorts. ASB10 is a member of the ASB family of proteins, which have a common structure including a unique N-terminus, a variable number of central ankyrin (ANK) repeat domains and a suppressor of cytokine signaling (SOCS) box at the C-terminus. Mutations in ASB10 are distributed through

Are There Indications for Total Pancreatectomy in 2016?

An elective total pancreatectomy (TP) was first performed by Eugene Rockey of Portland, Oregon, in 1942. In the 1960s and 1970s, TP was the routine resection for pancreatic cancer in many centers because of fear of a leaking pancreatojejunostomy and multicentricity of the disease but the result used to be dreadful (in today's perspective). However, more recently, postoperative mortality and morbidity after pancreatic resections have improved due to better anastomotic technique and pre-, peri- and postoperative care. Today, TP - despite being a more extensive operation - can be offered with abo

Top five industries resulting in injuries from acute chemical incidents—Hazardous Substance Emergency Events Surveillance, nine states, 1999-2008.

PROBLEM/CONDITION: Because industries using and/or producing chemicals are located in close proximity to populated areas, U.S. residents are at risk for unintentional chemical exposures. REPORTING PERIOD: 1999-2008. DESCRIPTION OF SYSTEM: The Hazardous Substances Emergency Events Surveillance (HSEES) system was operated by the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry during January 1991-September 2009 to collect data that would enable researchers to describe the public health consequences of chemical releases and to develop activities aimed at reducing the harm from such releases. Deep two-photon brain imaging with a red-shifted fluorometric Ca2+ indicator.

In vivo Ca2+ imaging of neuronal populations in deep cortical layers has remained a major challenge, as the recording depth of two-photon microscopy is limited because of the scattering and absorption of photons in brain tissue. A possible strategy to increase the imaging depth is the use of red-shifted fluorescent dyes, as scattering of photons is reduced at long wavelengths. Here, we tested the red-shifted fluorescent Ca2+ indicator Cal-590 for deep tissue experiments in the mouse cortex in vivo. In experiments involving bulk loading of neurons with the acetoxymethyl (AM) ester version of Ca

Wolbachia-mediated antibacterial protection and immune gene regulation in Drosophila.

The outcome of microbial infection of insects is dependent not only on interactions between the host and pathogen, but also on the interactions between microbes that co-infect the host. Recently the maternally inherited endosymbiotic bacteria Wolbachia has been shown to protect insects from a range of microbial and eukaryotic pathogens. Mosquitoes experimentally infected with Wolbachia have upregulated immune responses and are protected from a number of pathogens including viruses, bacteria, Plasmodium and filarial nematodes. It has been hypothesised that immune upregulation underpins Wolbachi

Environmental management with knowledge of uncertainty: a methylmercury case study.

In Oregon's Willamette River Basin, health advisories currently limit consumption of fish that have accumulated methylmercury to levels posing a potential health risk for humans. Under the Clean Water Act, these advisories represent an impairment of the beneficial use of fish consumption and create the requirement for a mercury total maximum daily load. A percent load reduction for total mercury was determined by comparing mercury levels in surface water to a water column guidance value linked to the protection of specified beneficial uses. In this case study, we discuss how probabilistic (Mon

Calcium in sympathetic boutons of rat superior cervical ganglion during facilitation, augmentation and potentiation.

The sympathetic preganglionic nerve terminals of the rat superior cervical ganglion were loaded with the calcium indicator oregon green 488 BAPTA-1 to measure the change in calcium concentration in the terminal boutons, (delta[Ca2+]b) following short (1 or 5 impulses) and long (200 impulses) trains at 30 Hz. The delta[Ca2+]b after a single action potential or a short train declined in two phases: a fast phase with a time constant of 530+/-30 ms and a moderate phase with a time constant of 4.0+/-0.2 s. The delta[Ca2+]b following a long train eventually declined with a time constant of 127+/-34

An overview of plague in the United States and a report of investigations of two human cases in Kern county, California, 1995.

Plague was confirmed in the United States from nine western states during 1995. Evidence of Yersinia pestis infection was identified in 28 species of wild or domestic mammals. Thirteen of the plague positive species were wild rodents; 15 were predators/carnivores. Yersinia pestis was isolated from eight species of fleas. Seven confirmed cases of human plague were reported in 1995 (New Mexico 3; California 2; Arizona and Oregon 1 each). Five of the seven cases were bubonic; one was septicemic and one a fatal pneumonic case. Months of onset ranged from March through August. In California, during

Syphilis, sex and crack cocaine: images of risk and morality.

A new epidemic of syphilis in the Portland, Oregon metropolitan region mirrors a national trend in the United States. The epidemic is centered in urban areas, is associated with heterosexual transmission, and disproportionately affects people of color, especially African-Americans. The epidemic has been linked to sexual activity among users of crack cocaine, and particularly to the practice of trading sex and crack. Here, we report an analysis of in-depth interviews of 40 respondents, of whom 31 have used crack cocaine, 12 have experience as professional sex workers (prostitutes), and 12 are c

Clinical Symptoms of Dengue Infection among Patients from a Non-Endemic Area and Potential for a Predictive Model: A Multiple Logistic Regression Analysis and Decision Tree.

Under-recognition of dengue infection may lead to increased morbidity and mortality, whereas early detection is shown to help improve patient outcomes. Recent incidence and outbreak reports of dengue virus in the United States and other temperate regions where dengue was not typically seen have raised concerns regarding appropriate diagnosis and management by healthcare providers unfamiliar with the disease. This study aimed to describe self-reported clinical symptoms of dengue fever in a non-endemic cohort and to establish a clinically useful predictive algorithm based on presenting features
