The nonimmobilizer 1,2-dichlorohexafluorocyclobutane does not affect thermoregulation in the rat.

Inhaled and other anesthetics profoundly affect the central nervous system, causing amnesia, immobility in the face of noxious stimulation, and depression of thermoregulation. Nonimmobilizers, inhaled compounds whose lipophilicity suggests that they should be anesthetics, do not produce immobility, but they do cause amnesia. Their effects on thermoregulation were the subject of the present study. We gave eight rats isoflurane on one occasion and the nonimmobilizer 2N (1,2-dichlorolhexafluorocyclobutane) on another. We measured the effect of various concentrations of each compound on thermoregu

Exercise Regimen for Mitigation of Neck Pain in Military Aircrew and Support Personnel.

INTRODUCTION: Operators of rotary wing aircraft and high-performance jet aircraft often face musculoskeletal pain and cervical spine injury risks due to flight-related factors, including heavy vibrational and g-loading, abrupt head maneuvering, and a large number of flight hours. This study explores the use of a portable lightweight resistance band exercise device (PLED) to strengthen and stretch neck musculature, potentially mitigating these risks. METHODS: A multi-aircraft study building on an initial pilot study of 10 high-performance jet aircraft aviators involved both active-duty aviator

GPCR in Adipose Tissue Function-Focus on Lipolysis.

Adipose tissue can be divided anatomically, histologically, and functionally into two major entities white and brown adipose tissues (WAT and BAT, respectively). WAT is the primary energy depot, storing most of the bioavailable triacylglycerol molecules of the body, whereas BAT is designed for dissipating energy in the form of heat, a process also known as non-shivering thermogenesis as a defense against a cold environment. Importantly, BAT-dependent energy dissipation directly correlates with cardiometabolic health and has been postulated as an intriguing target for anti-obesity therapies. In

Reactogenicity of COVID-19 vaccine in hemodialysis patients: a single-center retrospective study.

Introduction: Some hemodialysis patients are reluctant to undergo COVID-19 vaccination for the fear of developing adverse events (AEs). The aim of this study was to verify the safety of the mRNA-1273 vaccine in hemodialysis patients. Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis of in-center hemodialysis patients who underwent mRNA-1273 vaccine from March 1st to April 30th, 2021. All AEs occurring after the first and the second doses were collected and classified as local or systemic. Results: Overall, 126 patients on chronic maintenance dialysis without a prior COVID-19 diagnosis were vaccin

Electroacupuncture and Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation Induced Sensations in Bell's Palsy Patients: A Quantitative Current Intensity Analysis.

BACKGROUND: The intensity of electrical acupoint stimulation such as electroacupuncture (EA) and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) is regulated by the observation of skin shivering or the participant's comfort response. However, the specific intensity and spatial scope following EA or TENS stimulation are unclear. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to test the stimulatory current intensities of lower and upper sensation thresholds in TENS- and EA-based treatment of Bell's palsy patients. Also, the spatial scope of the stimulation at these current intensities was simulated and measur

The dangers of accepting a single diagnosis: case report of concurrent Plasmodium knowlesi malaria and dengue infection.

BACKGROUND: Dengue and malaria are two common, mosquito-borne infections, which may lead to mortality if not managed properly. Concurrent infections of dengue and malaria are rare due to the different habitats of its vectors and activities of different carrier mosquitoes. The first case reported was in 2005. Since then, several concurrent infections have been reported between the dengue virus (DENV) and the malaria protozoans, Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax. Symptoms of each infection may be masked by a simultaneous second infection, resulting in late treatment and severe complicat

Diffuse pulmonary haemorrhage accompanied by haemothorax as a rare presentation of primary lung angiosarcoma.

Yellow fever (YF) is an acute viral communicable disease transmitted by an arbovirus of the Flavivirus genus. It is primarily a zoonotic disease, especially the monkeys. Worldwide, an estimated 200,000 cases of yellow fever occurred each year, and the case-fatality rate is ~15%. Forty-five endemic countries in Africa and Latin America, with a population of close to 1 billion, are at risk. Up to 50% of severely affected persons from YF die without treatment. During 2009, 55 cases and 18 deaths were reported from Brazil, Colombia, and Peru. Brazil reported the maximum number of cases and death,

Significant head cooling can be achieved while maintaining normothermia in the newborn piglet.

BACKGROUND: Hypothermia has been shown to be neuroprotective in animal models of hypoxia-ischaemia. It is currently being evaluated as a potentially therapeutic option in the management of neonatal hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy. However, significant hypothermia has adverse systemic effects. It has also recently been found that the stress of being cold can abolish the neuroprotective effects of hypothermia. It is hypothesised that selective head cooling (SHC) while maintaining normal core temperature would enable local hypothermic neuroprotection while limiting the stress and side effects of

Comparison of the thermoregulatory responses to intracerebroventricularly injected dopamine, noradrenaline and 5-hydroxytryptamine in the goat.

The thermoregulatory responses to dopamine (DA), noradrenaline (NA) and 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT), injected into the third cerebral ventricle of goats at 20 degrees C ambient temperature (Ta) or during cold exposure, were compared before and after pretreatment with the DA receptor blocker haloperidol or the 5-HT receptor blocker methysergide. At 20 degrees C Ta, intracerebroventricular (i.c.v.) injection of DA (800 microgram), NA (200 microgram) or 5-HT (800 microgram) induced a decrease in body temperature (Tb) and dilatation of the ear vessels. After DA and 5-HT, but not after NA, panting w

Translational Pharmacology and Physiology of Brown Adipose Tissue in Human Disease and Treatment.

Human brown adipose tissue (BAT) is experimentally modeled to better understand the biology of this important metabolic tissue, and also to enable the potential discovery and development of novel therapeutics for obesity and sequelae resulting from the persistent positive energy balance. This chapter focuses on translation into humans of findings and hypotheses generated in nonhuman models of BAT pharmacology. Given the demonstrated challenges of sustainably reducing caloric intake in modern humans, potential solutions to obesity likely lie in increasing energy expenditure. The energy-transfor

The effectiveness of strategies for the management and/or prevention of hypothermia within the adult perioperative environment: systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Inadvertent hypothermia is common in patient's undergoing surgical procedures. Hypothermia within the perioperative environment may have many undesired physiological effects that are associated with significant postoperative morbidity. Patient's temperature drops to below 35°C during the first hour of anaesthesia because of impaired thermoregulatory mechanism and patient getting cold in the operating theatre. For this reason, health care professionals working in the perioperative environment need to know what are the most effective strategies for treating or preventing hypothermia

Effect of unilateral intrathecal prilocaine-fentanyl versus bupivacaine-fentanyl on postoperative spontaneous voiding in ambulatory male patients undergoing inguinal hernioplasty: a randomized double-blinded comparative study.

Ambulatory inguinal hernia repair requires anesthetic techniques that provide reliable intraoperative analgesia while facilitating rapid recovery and timely discharge. Postoperative spontaneous voiding is a critical determinant of discharge readiness. This study compared unilateral intrathecal prilocaine-fentanyl with bupivacaine-fentanyl in male patients undergoing elective inguinal hernioplasty. In this randomized comparative trial, 70 male patients (ASA I-II, aged 18-60 years) scheduled for elective unilateral inguinal hernia repair were allocated to receive either intrathecal prilocaine 40

Bronchial artery embolization before endobronchial resection to avoid severe bleeding in central airway obstruction: a single-center retrospective pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Bronchoscopic resection represents a facilitated alternative option for restoration of airway patency in selected cases. However, the procedure is susceptible to complications arising from severe hemorrhaging. This single-center retrospective pilot study aimed to evaluate the safety and feasibility of bronchial artery embolization (BAE) prior to endobronchial resection in patients with central airway obstruction (CAO). METHOD: Patients with CAO caused by hypervascular tumors with strong enhancement on computed tomography (CT) and/or hemoptysis were included in the study. All neopla

Perioperative Temperature Monitoring in Anesthesia: A Review of Current Evidence and Clinical Practice.

Perioperative hypothermia remains common during anesthesia and surgery. It is associated with higher rates of surgical site infection, blood loss, transfusion, cardiac events, postanesthetic shivering, delayed recovery, and longer hospital stay. Temperature monitoring is therefore an important part of safe anesthesia care when it is linked to thermal management. This article is a narrative review of perioperative temperature monitoring in anesthesia. The aim was to review the physiology of perioperative heat loss, the clinical effects of hypothermia, the performance of common monitoring sites

Cold water exposure therapy and effects on insulin: a scoping review.

CONTEXT: Cold water exposure (CWE) is a growing trend among health and wellness communities due to its effects on brown adipose tissue (BAT) activation and neurotransmitter modulation. However, its impact on insulin sensitivity and glucose metabolism in humans remains underexplored. OBJECTIVES: This scoping review aims to evaluate the existing literature on the effects of CWE on insulin-related metabolic markers in humans and to identify the knowledge gaps that currently exist in this field of study. METHODS: A scoping review was conducted by two authors (JG and BM) according to the Joanna B

Changes in Plasma Glycine Concentration in General Anesthesia With Remifentanil: A Prospective Observational Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: Remifentanil-based anesthesia has been associated with postanesthetic shivering (PAS) and postoperative pain consistent with opioid-induced hyperalgesia (OIH). PAS and OIH have been suggested to involve N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor signaling. Glycine participating in the NMDA receptor functions as a co-agonist. Commercial remifentanil formulations contain glycine as an excipient, raising the question of whether perioperative exposure to this medication increases circulating glycine levels, potentially including those in the central nervous system. OBJECTIVE: The objective
