Efficacy of traditional Chinese medicine in improving nutritional status among Chinese maintenance hemodialysis patients: a meta-analysis of the last decade.

BACKGROUND: Malnutrition is a common and severe complication in maintenance hemodialysis patients, which significantly increases the risk of adverse clinical outcomes. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has emerged as a promising adjunctive therapy for nutritional improvement, yet its efficacy and underlying mechanisms require systematic clarification. This study synthesized the evidence to explore the role of TCM in managing malnutrition in hemodialysis populations. These findings aim to inform evidence-based decisions regarding its clinical applicability. METHOD: A systematic literature sea

CRP, NLR, and PLR Dynamics in Non-Metastatic Breast Cancer Patients Receiving Chemotherapy: Associations With Nutritional and Clinical Factors.

BACKGROUND: Systemic inflammatory biomarkers such as C-reactive protein (CRP), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) are increasingly studied in breast cancer, but their within-treatment dynamics and relationship with anthropometric context during chemotherapy remain underexplored. This study aimed to evaluate early-to-intermediate, within-treatment changes in inflammatory biomarkers (CRP, NLR, PLR) and examine their associations with sociodemographic, clinical, and anthropometric variables among women with stage I-III non-metastatic breast cancer receivi

Acceptability and Feasibility of Health Measures in Preteens: Findings From the ROLO Longitudinal Birth Cohort Study.

INTRODUCTION: Limited research has investigated young people's opinions on health measures that are used in clinical and research settings. This study aimed to describe young people's views on research methods utilised in a longitudinal birth cohort. It also aimed to explore the feasibility of (i) blood pressure and a fitness assessment as a substitute for blood biomarkers; (ii) foot length as a substitute for maternal-reported stage of puberty and (iii) neck and mid-upper arm circumference as a substitute for body composition analysis in preteens (9-11-year-olds). METHODS: This is a mixed-me

Maternal dietary quality, inflammatory potential and childhood adiposity: an individual participant data pooled analysis of seven European cohorts in the ALPHABET consortium.

BACKGROUND: Mounting evidence suggests that maternal diet influences pregnancy and birth outcomes, but its contribution to the global epidemic of childhood obesity has not as yet been definitively characterized. We investigated whether maternal whole diet quality and inflammatory potential influence childhood adiposity. METHODS: We harmonized and pooled individual participant data from 16,295 mother-child pairs in seven European birth cohorts. Maternal pre-, early-, late-, and whole-pregnancy (any time during pregnancy) dietary quality and inflammatory potential assessed with the Dietary Appr

Predictors of Difficult Intubation with the Bonfils Rigid Fiberscope.

BACKGROUND: Endotracheal intubation is commonly performed via direct laryngoscopy (DL). However, in certain patients, DL may be difficult or impossible. The Bonfils Rigid Fiberscope® (BRF) is an alternative intubation device, the design of which raises the question of whether factors that predict difficult DL also predict difficult BRF. We undertook this study to determine which demographic, morphologic, and morphometric factors predict difficult intubation with the BRF. METHODS: Four hundred adult patients scheduled for elective surgery were recruited. Patients were excluded if awake intubat

Effect of a 12-Week Hybrid Mode Exercise Protocol on Obesity Indices and Health-Related Quality of Life in Diabetic Dyslipidemia.

Background Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a chronic metabolic condition defined by sustained elevated blood glucose and impaired insulin action, conditions that frequently give rise to diabetic dyslipidemia. This lipid disorder encompasses dangerous alterations in blood fat levels, most notably elevated triglycerides and depressed high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, which together substantially heighten cardiovascular disease risk. Since abdominal adiposity amplifies these metabolic disturbances, structured lifestyle changes, especially exercise, are considered essential pillars of

Food Insecurity Determinants, Coping Strategies, and Association With Nutritional Status Among Hemodialysis Patients in Pahang, Malaysia: Protocol for a Mixed Methods Study.

BACKGROUND: Food insecurity involves the lack of physical and economic access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food that meets an individual's dietary needs. Patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) undergoing hemodialysis have specific dietary needs, but food insecurity may hinder them from adhering to prescribed guidelines and preserving their nutritional status. However, no research has been conducted to elucidate food insecurity among patients undergoing hemodialysis in Malaysia. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the prevalence of food insecurity, its determinants, and its asso

Serum Biomarkers for Nutritional Monitoring in Motor Neuron Disease: A Longitudinal Cohort Study.

Background: Malnutrition and metabolic dysregulation are common in motor neuron disease (MND) and contribute to accelerated functional decline and reduced survival. Routine serum biochemical analytes can be used to assess nutritional status; however, their interpretation in MND is confounded by systemic inflammation and disease-related metabolic changes. This study investigated the relationship between serum biochemical analytes, inflammatory status, disease severity, progression, and body composition in people living with MND. Methods: In this single-centre, longitudinal prospective cohort st

Impact of maternal iron deficiency anaemia on the expression of the newly discovered multi-copper ferroxidase, Zyklopen, in term placentas.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

In the present study, we investigated the effect of maternal iron deficiency anaemia (IDA) on expression of the newly discovered iron transporter, Zyklopen in term placenta, in 200 pregnant women. Placental expression of Zyklopen was studied by mRNA analysis and immunohistochemistry for the protein. In addition neonatal anthropometric parameters were also analysed. 58.8% of 200 subjects were anaemic. Both Zyklopen mRNA as well as protein expression in the placenta showed a statistically significant increase with increasing severity of anaemia. Although all the neonatal anthropometric parameter

Body composition changes in patients with head and neck cancer under active treatment: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Head and neck cancer patients have the second highest malnutrition prevalence, when compared with other oncological patients. They experience significant weight loss before diagnosis, during and after treatment, and even during the first year of follow-up. However, the prognostic value of weight loss depends on body mass index, and this may be associated with low skeletal muscle mass, masking its loss. Thus, weight loss itself poorly predicts outcome in head and neck cancer patients when compared with depleted skeletal muscle mass, illustrating the inadequacy of body mass index as

Effect of a behavioural intervention in obese pregnant women (the UPBEAT study): a multicentre, randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Behavioural interventions might improve clinical outcomes in pregnant women who are obese. We aimed to investigate whether a complex intervention addressing diet and physical activity could reduce the incidence of gestational diabetes and large-for-gestational-age infants. METHODS: The UK Pregnancies Better Eating and Activity Trial (UPBEAT) is a randomised controlled trial done at antenatal clinics in eight hospitals in multi-ethnic, inner-city locations in the UK. We recruited pregnant women (15-18 weeks plus 6 days of gestation) older than 16 years who were obese (BMI ≥30 kg/m(

Peripheral vascular response to mild indirect cooling in patients with homozygous sickle cell (SS) disease and the frequency of painful crisis.

1. In homozygous sickle cell (SS) disease, skin cooling is a common precipitating factor of the painful crisis which is associated with avascular necrosis of active bone marrow. Since skin cooling does not directly induce sickling, we have investigated the nature of the reflex vascular responses to mild cooling in SS patients in a steady state of the disease and compared them with their history of painful crises. 2. Experiments were performed in Jamaica on 60 male SS patients and 30 matched control subjects with normal haemoglobin (AA) genotype. Forearm blood flow (FBF) was measured by venous

Elevated serum Activin A in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease with skeletal muscle wasting.

OBJECTIVE: Muscle wasting contributes to the reduced quality of life and increased mortality in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Muscle atrophy in mice with cachexia was caused by Activin A binding to ActRIIB. The role of circulating Activin A leading to muscle atrophy in COPD remains elusive. METHODS: In the present study, we evaluated the relationship between serum levels of Activin A and skeletal muscle wasting in COPD patients. The expression levels of serum Activin A were measured in 78 stable COPD patients and in 60 healthy controls via ELISA, which was also used to determi

Obesity in achondroplasia patients: from evidence to medical monitoring.

Achondroplasia is a rare genetic disease representing the most common form of short-limb dwarfism. It is characterized by bone growth abnormalities that are well characterized and by a strong predisposition to abdominal obesity for which causes are unknown. Despite having aroused interest at the end of the 20 h century, there are still only very little data available on this aspect of the pathology. Today, interest is rising again, and some studies are now proposing mechanistic hypotheses and guidance for patient management. These data confirm that obesity is a major health problem in achondro

Growth, physical, and cognitive function in children who are born HIV-free: School-age follow-up of a cluster-randomised trial in rural Zimbabwe.

BACKGROUND: Globally, over 16 million children were exposed to HIV during pregnancy but remain HIV-free at birth and throughout childhood by 2022. Children born HIV-free (CBHF) have higher morbidity and mortality and poorer neurodevelopment in early life compared to children who are HIV-unexposed (CHU), but long-term outcomes remain uncertain. We characterised school-age growth, cognitive and physical function in CBHF and CHU previously enrolled in the Sanitation Hygiene Infant Nutrition Efficacy (SHINE) trial in rural Zimbabwe. METHODS AND FINDINGS: The SHINE trial enrolled pregnant women be

Cytokine release syndrome was an independent risk factor associated with hypoalbuminemia for patients with relapsed/refractory hematological malignancies after CAR-T cell therapy.

Background & aimsThis study aims to assess the nutritional status of patients during the different phases of the Chimeric Antigen Receptor (CAR)-T cell therapy and to identify prominent risk factors of hypoalbuminemia in patients after CAR-T treatment. The clinical consequences of malnutrition in cancer patients have been highlighted by growing evidence from previous clinical studies. Given CAR-T cell therapy's treatment intensity and possible side effects, it is important to provide patients with sufficient medical attention and support for their nutritional well-being.MethodsThis study was c
