Relationship Between a Plant-Based Dietary Portfolio and Risk of Cardiovascular Disease: Findings From the Women's Health Initiative Prospective Cohort Study.

Background The plant-based Dietary Portfolio combines established cholesterol-lowering foods (plant protein, nuts, viscous fiber, and phytosterols), plus monounsaturated fat, and has been shown to improve low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and other cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors. No studies have evaluated the relation of the Dietary Portfolio with incident CVD events. Methods and Results We followed 123 330 postmenopausal women initially free of CVD in the Women's Health Initiative from 1993 through 2017. We used Cox proportional-hazard models to estimate adjusted hazard ratios (H

Complementary feeding: new styles versus old myths.

Early life feeding habits may potentially alter future metabolic programming and body composition. Complementary feeding is the period of time when infants introduce food different from milk in their diet, together with a gradual reduction of the intake of milk (either breast milk or formula), to finally acquire the diet model of their family. This period is important in the transition of the infant from milk feeding to family foods, and is necessary for both nutritional and developmental reasons. The timing for introducing complementary foods and the method of feeding have changed over time.

Effects of dietary intervention on IGF-I and IGF-binding proteins, and related alterations in sex steroid metabolism: the Diet and Androgens (DIANA) Randomised Trial.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the effects of a comprehensive change in dietary composition on endogenous hormone metabolism. The specific aim was to examine whether this intervention could lead to favourable changes in insulin sensitivity, levels of IGF-I and IGF-binding proteins (IGFBPs), and total and bioavailable testosterone and estradiol, that would be expected to reduce breast cancer risk. DESIGN: Randomised dietary intervention study; duration of 5 months. SUBJECTS: From a total of 99 postmenopausal women, who had elevated baseline plasma testosterone levels, 49 women were randomly assigned to

Rickets, growth, and alkaline phosphatase in urban adolescents.

Calciferol therapy for 12 months in white, Asian, and West Indian schoolchildren resulted in a highly significant increase in height and weight when compared with schoolchildren not so treated. The rate of fall of serum alkaline phosphatase was similar in both the treated and untreated schoolchildren and in other children treated in hospital for rickets. Dietary studies on 9% of the total survey by weighed inventory methods showed a low average intake of vitamin D, while random estimates of 25-hydroxycalciferol levels on 6% of the children were less than 3.8 ng/ml in 40% of those studied (prin

Comparative Analysis of Diet Quality, Iron Intake, and Supplementation Among Vegan and Omnivorous Amateur Runners Living in Urban Areas.

Plant-based diets, including vegan and vegetarian patterns, are gaining popularity among physically active individuals, including amateur runners. While such diets may offer health benefits, they also carry a risk of inadequate intake of key nutrients, among which iron plays a crucial role. This study compared diet quality, iron intake, and dietary supplementation among vegan, lactovegetarian, and omnivorous amateur runners in Warsaw, Poland. One hundred runners (52 males, 48 females; aged 18-65) were classified into vegan (n = 36), lactovegetarian (n = 10), and omnivorous (n = 54) groups. Die

A Structured Narrative Review of Contemporary Dietary Strategies Following Acute Coronary Syndromes.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Acute coronary syndromes (ACS) remain a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Although a Mediterranean-style diet is recommended for secondary prevention following ACS, patients are increasingly interested in alternative dietary approaches. This structured narrative review critically compares the evidence supporting eight dietary patterns for secondary prevention following ACS. METHODS: A structured literature search of PubMed/MEDLINE was performed from database inception through October 2025. Randomized controlled trials evaluating Mediterranean, Dietary Approac

Molecular Features, Effective Sources, and Physiological Effects of Omega-3 Unsaturated Fatty Acids on Cardiovascular, Neurological, and Muscular Health, and Clinical Relevance for Several Conditions: A Narrative Review.

Omega-3 fatty acids, essential for various physiological functions, are well recognized for their benefits in cardiovascular, neurological, and inflammatory health. In this narrative review we analyzed and compared the primary sources of omega-3 fatty acids, including plant-derived alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), derived from flaxseed, chia, walnuts, and canola oil; and marine-derived eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), derived from microalgae, fish oil, and krill oil; with a focus on their bioavailability, clinical effects, and practical applications. The findings revealed

Association of Christian Orthodox Fasting with Sociodemographic, Anthropometric and Lifestyle Factors and Serum Biochemical Indices: A Cross-Sectional Study on Patients with Metabolic Diseases.

Christian Orthodox fasting, a type of time-restricted diet, which presents some similarities to the Mediterranean Diet, also including certain similarities with periodic vegetarianism or other time-restricted diets (e.g., intermittent diet and Ramadan fasting), may cumulatively be related to the same or even better beneficial healthy effects as these well-recognized dietary patterns. The present study aimed to explore the potential beneficial impact of Christian Orthodox fasting in patients with metabolic disorders, such as diabetes mellitus type 2, excessive obesity, hypothyroidism and osteop

Effect of Moderate Red Meat Intake Compared With Plant-Based Meat Alternative on Psychological Well-Being: A 10-Wk Cluster Randomized Intervention in Healthy Young Adults.

BACKGROUND: A healthy diet has been proposed to support good mental health, but the addition of either red meat or meat alternatives is nuanced. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to determine if psychological and physiological well-being is differentially affected by consuming recommended weekly amounts of either lean red meat or plant-based meat alternatives (PBMAs) supplemented with a plant-rich diet. METHODS: The trial was a parallel 2-arm randomized intervention of 10 wk duration. Eighty healthy omnivorous young adults were clustered as 40 cohabitating household pairs. Each pair was randomly assigned

Knowledge, Attitudes and Application of Critical Nutrient Supplementation in Vegan Diets among Healthcare Professionals-Survey Results from a Medical Congress on Plant-Based Nutrition.

Plant-based diets are associated with numerous health benefits but also bear risks of micronutrient deficiencies if inadequately planned. The risk of nutrient deficiencies can be reliably reduced by supplementation but requires risk-awareness. We distributed a paper-and-pencil questionnaire to n = 902 healthcare professionals attending a congress on plant-based nutrition (VegMed 2018, Berlin). On the day of the survey (21 April 2018), n = 475 questionnaires were returned and analyzed descriptively. Of the n = 213 strict vegan participants, 2% (n = 5) took no supplements at all. All supplementi

Potassium Intake in India: Opportunity for Mitigating Risks of High-Sodium Diets.

INTRODUCTION: Most Indians are vegetarian or eat very little meat, which could imply high potassium intake. Because a high-potassium diet could counterbalance the adverse health effects of high-sodium intake, this study aimed to describe potassium relative to sodium intake and investigate the relationship between blood pressure and potassium intake relative to sodium intake in rural and urban India. METHODS: Investigators collected 24-hour urines from 1,445 participants in a subset of 2 population-based surveys in North India in 2012-2013. Standardized questionnaires were used to collect info

Diagnosing hypovitaminosis D: serum measurements of calcium, phosphate, and alkaline phosphatase are unreliable, even in the presence of secondary hyperparathyroidism.

OBJECTIVE: To ascertain the ability of routine biochemical markers of bone turnover to predict vitamin D insufficiency. METHODS: Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was used to assess the value of serum alkaline phosphatase, calcium, and phosphate concentrations in the detection of hypovitaminosis D (< 20 nmol/l) in 467 patients between 1998 and 2000 (Cohort 1). The same analysis was repeated in a subsequent group of 719 patients between 2001 and 2003 (Cohort 2), in whom values of parathyroid hormone (PTH) were also available. Samples with elevated parathyroid levels from Cohort

Development of a Portfolio Diet Score and Its Concurrent and Predictive Validity Assessed by a Food Frequency Questionnaire.

The Portfolio Diet, a plant-based portfolio of cholesterol-lowering foods, has been shown to reduce low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and other cardiovascular risk factors, in randomized controlled trials (RCTs). It is not known if these beneficial effects translate to a lower incidence cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. To support examinations between Portfolio Diet adherence and disease, a Portfolio Diet score (PDS) was developed and its predictive and concurrent validity was assessed within the Toronto Healthy Diet Study, a six-month RCT in overweight adults. Predictive validity

Neanderthal behaviour, diet, and disease inferred from ancient DNA in dental calculus.

Recent genomic data have revealed multiple interactions between Neanderthals and modern humans, but there is currently little genetic evidence regarding Neanderthal behaviour, diet, or disease. Here we describe the shotgun-sequencing of ancient DNA from five specimens of Neanderthal calcified dental plaque (calculus) and the characterization of regional differences in Neanderthal ecology. At Spy cave, Belgium, Neanderthal diet was heavily meat based and included woolly rhinoceros and wild sheep (mouflon), characteristic of a steppe environment. In contrast, no meat was detected in the diet of
