A novel coronavirus of ferrets was first described in 1993. This coronavirus caused an enteric disease called epizootic catarrhal enteritis (ECE). While international guidelines on oncofertility practice have been published in developed countries, there is limited information available on oncofertility practice in developing countries, which often face limitations in their cancer health support networks. As survival rates improve in the field of cancer and other diseases, there is a growing need for stronger oncofertility services in developing countries. Given that 50% of cancer patients are under the age of 65, many of these patients are of reproductive age and preserving their fertility health prior to starting treatment is valuable.

The COVID-19 pandemic has created unprecedented hurdles to the delivery of care to patients with cancer. Patients with hematologic malignancies appear to have a greater risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection and severe disease due to myelosuppression and lymphopenia. The first challenge, therefore, is how to continue to deliver effective, curative therapy to vulnerable patients and at the same time avoid exposing them, and their health care teams (HCT), to SARS-CoV-2. An additional challenge is the timely completion of the diagnostic and staging studies required to formulate appropriate treatment plans.
