Spectroscopic characterization of heme iron-nitrosyl species and their role in NO reductase mechanisms in diiron proteins.

Nitric oxide (NO) plays an important role in cell signalling and in the mammalian immune response to infection. On its own, NO is a relatively inert radical, and when it is used as a signalling molecule, its concentration remains within the picomolar range. However, at infection sites, the NO concentration can reach the micromolar range, and reactions with other radical species and transition metals lead to a broad toxicity. Under aerobic conditions, microorganisms cope with this nitrosative stress by oxidizing NO to nitrate (NO3−). Microbial hemoglobins play an essential role in this NO-detox

Evaluation of an oil-producing green alga Chlorella sp. C2 for biological DeNOx of industrial flue gases.

NOx, a significant portion of fossil fuel flue gases, are among the most serious environmental issues in the world and must be removed in an additional costly gas treatment step. This study evaluated the growth of the green alga Chlorella sp. C2 under a nitrite-simulated NOx environment and the removal rates of actual flue gas fixed salts (FGFSs) from Sinopec's Shijiazhuang refinery along with lipid production. The results showed that nitrite levels lower than 176.5 mM had no significant adverse effects on the cell growth and photosynthesis of Chlorella sp. C2, demonstrating that this green al

Nitrogen starvation coupled with extended anoxic time induces rapid growth of ammonia oxidizers and enrichment of anammox bacteria in low-ammonium wastewater.

Partial nitrification-anammox (PNA) is an energy-efficient autotrophic nitrogen removal process, yet its application to low-ammonium wastewater remains challenging due to the difficulty in selectively suppressing nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB) while maintaining ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) bacteria. Here, we developed a chemical-free strategy based on sequential nitrogen starvation and extended anoxic operation to successfully establish one-stage PNA. Long-term reactor operation and cyclic nitrogen conversion performance demonstrated that repeat

Co-utilization of manganous nitrate and pyrolusite enables concurrent mitigation of arsenic mobilization and greenhouse gas emissions in paddy-field wetlands.

Constructed wetlands face the dual challenge of arsenic (As) mobilization and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions under flooded anoxic conditions. Moving beyond single-process remediation, this study developed a synergistic strategy through the co-application of manganous nitrate (Mn(NO3)2) and pyrolusite (MnO2) in microcosms simulating As-contaminated paddy-field wetlands. The results demonstrated that the Mn(NO3)2+MnO2 treatment achieved near-complete As(III) immobilization in the overlying water, significantly outperforming other amendments (KNO3-alone, MnO2-alone and KNO3+MnO2) during a 24d-inc

Microbial dynamics along nutrient flow and removal in an integrated multitrophic aquaculture system.

Microbial community assembly in marine integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA) systems remains poorly understood, particularly across interconnected extractive compartments spanning spatial and temporal scales. Two-step biofilters that incorporate seaweeds and multi-species biofilms (periphyton) are widely used to remove excess nitrogen and phosphorus from aquaculture effluents while simultaneously generating protein-rich, edible biomass. Variations in nutrient composition along these biofilters suggest that microbial diversity and functionality may be differentially shaped within the syst

Partial manure substitution mitigates nitrogen environmental loss and improves maize yield via reconfiguring rhizosphere-bulk soil microbial functional differentiation.

Fertilization and rhizosphere effects co-regulate soil N cycling and bacterial succession, with mechanistic understanding being key to improving crop yield and N transformation in intensive farmland. Based on a 16-year field experiment, six fertilization treatments with urea (U) and manure (M) alone or in combination (CK, U200, U100, M200, M100, and U100M100; subscript numbers denote nitrogen application rates in kg N ha-1) were established to clarify the responses of bacterial communities in two components (bulk and rhizosphere) and their associations with N dynamics and maize yield. Diagnosing activated sludge dysfunction: A full-scale wastewater treatment study.

Activated sludge systems treating municipal wastewater frequently experience performance dysfunction, yet conventional diagnostics rely on isolated parameter monitoring that is difficult to integrate for prioritising interventions. Here, we report an integrated diagnostic framework combining machine learning interpretation, microbial community profiling, and multi-parameter assessment to characterise and prioritise the likely drivers of critical operational failures in a full-scale plant (50,000 m3/day). Adaptation mechanisms of ANAMMOX bacteria to extreme environments.

Anaerobic ammonium oxidation (ANAMMOX) bacteria (AnAOB) play a vital role in the global nitrogen cycle and have emerged as a promising alternative for sustainable nitrogen removal in wastewater treatment. They directly convert ammonium and nitrite into dinitrogen gas under anaerobic conditions, without the need for high energy and external carbon associated with conventional nitrification-denitrification. With increasing global demands to mitigate nutrient pollution and improve water quality, a deeper understanding of AnAOB has become both scientifically significant and practically necessary.

Impact of Chamaecrista rotundifolia cover cropping on soil elemental cycling in karst agroecosystems.

Karst desertification causes severe soil erosion, hydrological imbalance, and biodiversity loss, thereby threatening ecosystem resilience and agricultural productivity. Soil carbon (C), nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and sulfur (S) cycling underpin ecosystem stability, yet how agricultural management practices regulate multi-element cycling in degraded karst agroecosystems remains poorly understood. Here, we conducted a four-year field trial in a karst mango orchard in southwestern China and integrated metagenomic sequencing with comprehensive soil environmental profiling to investigate how C.

Nitrogen Redox Controls on Greenhouse Gas Production in Yedoma Taliks.

Large carbon and nitrogen pools are disproportionately concentrated in the icy, Pleistocene-aged silt deposits of Arctic Yedoma permafrost. Upon thaw, these undergo microbial mineralization, releasing greenhouse gases (GHGs) including carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O). Here, we present combined geochemical data with microbial function and community dynamics from deep (7-m) talik soil boreholes in water-unsaturated yedoma upland in interior Alaska. Our results reveal significant in situ seasonal shifts in microbial function, community composition, and diversity throug

Increased snowpack enhances ecological functions of cold-region constructed wetlands via plant-microbe interactions.

Snowpack variations in cold regions exert profound influences on the ecological functioning of constructed wetlands (CWs), particularly with respect to GHG emissions and nutrient removal. However, the underlying mechanisms have yet to be clarified. This study established pilot-scale vertical subsurface flow CWs in Northeast China, with Phragmites australis and Iris sibirica, and applied doubled snowpack (DS) and natural snow cover (CK) during winter. DS created highly moist, strongly reducing, and alkaline conditions during the dormant period, significantly inhibiting microbial aerobic respira

In situ electrocatalytic nitrate-to-nitrite conversion-driven anammox in MBRs for extremely efficient ammonium-containing wastewater treatment.

Nitrogen removal is crucial for global wastewater recycling and reuse. Anaerobic ammonia oxidation (anammox) is a revolutionary wastewater treatment technology, offering sustainable and cost-effective nitrogen removal solutions. However, the generation of 11 % nitrate (NO3-) as a byproduct remains a critical bottleneck, as it limits nitrogen-removal efficiency and requires external electron donors for further denitrification. To overcome this limitation, we propose an innovative integration of a green electrocatalytic reduction system, featuring a copper mesh-embedded membrane cathode, into th

Impact of iron-modified biochars on soil nitrous oxide emissions: Variations with iron salts and soil fertility.

Nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from soils are a significant environmental concern due to their contribution to greenhouse gas emissions. Biochar has been considered as a promising soil amendment for its potential to influence soil processes. Iron modification of biochar has been extensively discussed for its ability to enhance adsorption of pollutants, yet its impact on mitigating soil N2O emissions remains poorly understood. In the present study, corn straw (CB) and wood (WB) biochars were treated with FeSO4/FeCl3 (SCB and SWB) and Fe(NO3)3 (NCB and NWB). The effects of these biochars on soil

Spatial distribution characteristics and interaction effects of DOM and microbial communities in kelp cultivation areas.

The influence of macroalgae cultivation on aquaculture carbon sinks is significant, with microbial carbon (C) pumps contributing to a stable inert dissolved carbon pool in this context. Concurrently, dissolved organic matter (DOM) exchange at the marine sediment-water interface profoundly affects global ecosystem element cycling. However, the interactions between DOM and bacterial communities at the sediment-water interface in kelp cultivation areas, especially regarding microbial function prediction, have not been fully explored. This study analyzed the DOM characteristics, environmental fact

Holed up, but thriving: Impact of multitrophic cryoconite communities on glacier elemental cycles.

Cryoconite holes (water and sediment-filled depressions), found on glacier surfaces worldwide, serve as reservoirs of microbes, carbon, trace elements, and nutrients, transferring these components downstream via glacier hydrological networks. Through targeted amplicon sequencing of carbon and nitrogen cycling genes, coupled with functional inference-based methods, we explore the functional diversity of these mini-ecosystems within Antarctica and the Himalayas. These regions showcase distinct environmental gradients and experience varying rates of environmental change influenced by global clima

Insights into remediation effects and bacterial diversity of different remediation measures in rare earth mine soil with SO4 2- and heavy metals.

The increased demand for rare earth resources has led to an increase in the development of rare earth mines (REMs). However, the production of high-concentration leaching agents (SO4 2-) and heavy metals as a result of rare earth mining has increased, necessitating the removal of contaminants. Here, a series of experiments with different remediation measures, including control (CK), sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) alone (M), chemicals (Ca(OH)2, 1.5 g/kg) plus SRB (CM-L), chemicals (Ca(OH)2, 3.0 g/kg) plus SRB (CM-M), and chemicals (Ca(OH)2, 4.5 g/kg) plus SRB (CM-H), were conducted to investig

Mechanisms of high ammonium loading promoted phosphorus release from shallow lake sediments: A five-year large-scale experiment.

The unprecedented global increase in the anthropogenic-derived nitrogen (N) input may have profound effects on phosphorus (P) dynamics and may potentially lead to enhanced eutrophication as demonstrated in short-term mesocosm experiments. However, the role of N-influenced P release is less well studied in large-scale ecosystems. To gain more insight into ecosystem effects, we conducted a five-year large-scale experiment in ten ponds (700-1000 m2 each) with two types of sediments and five targeted total N concentrations (TN) by adding NH4Cl fertilizer (0.5, 1, 5, 10, and 25 mg N L-1). Hydrologic flushing rates drive nitrogen cycling and plant invasion in a freshwater coastal wetland model.

Coastal wetlands intercept significant amounts of nitrogen (N) from watersheds, especially when surrounding land cover is dominated by agriculture and urban development. Through plant uptake, soil immobilization, and denitrification, wetlands can remove excess N from flow-through water sources and mitigate eutrophication of connected aquatic ecosystems. Excess N can also change plant community composition in wetlands, including communities threatened by invasive species. Understanding how variable hydrology and N loading impact wetland N removal and community composition can help attain desire

Effect of low temperature on abiotic and biotic nitrate reduction by zero-valent Iron.

The effect of low temperatures on abiotic and biotic nitrate (NO3-) reduction by zero-valent iron (ZVI) were examined at temperatures below 25 °C. The extent and rate of nitrate removal in batch ZVI reactors were determined in the presence and absence of microorganisms at 3.5, 10, 17, and 25 °C. Under anoxic conditions, NO3- reduction rates in both ZVI-only and ZVI-cell reactors declined as temperature decreased. In ZVI-only reactor, 62% and 17% of initial nitrate concentration were reduced in 6 days at 25 and 3.5 °C, respectively. The reduced nitrate was completely recovered as ammonium ions

Paracoccus denitrificans possesses two BioR homologs having a role in regulation of biotin metabolism.

Recently, we determined that BioR, the GntR family of transcription factor, acts as a repressor for biotin metabolism exclusively distributed in certain species of α-proteobacteria, including the zoonotic agent Brucella melitensis and the plant pathogen Agrobacterium tumefaciens. However, the scenario is unusual in Paracoccus denitrificans, another closely related member of the same phylum α-proteobacteria featuring with denitrification. Not only does it encode two BioR homologs Pden_1431 and Pden_2922 (designated as BioR1 and BioR2, respectively), but also has six predictive BioR-recognizable
