Gut microbiome and serum metabolome alterations associated with lactose intolerance (LI): a case‒control study and paired-sample study based on the American Gut Project (AGP).

UNLABELLED: Lactose intolerance (LI) is a prevalent condition characterized by gastrointestinal symptoms that arise following lactose consumption. Recent evidence suggests that the gut microbiome may influence lactose levels in the gut. However, there is limited understanding regarding the alterations in microbiota and metabolism between individuals with LI and non-LI. This study conducted a paired-sample investigation utilizing data from the American Gut Project (AGP) and performed metagenomic and untargeted metabolomic analyses in a Chinese cohort to explore the interaction between the gut m

Weaning Age and Its Effect on the Development of the Swine Gut Microbiome and Resistome.

Piglets are often weaned between 19 and 22 days of age in North America, although in some swine operations this may occur at 14 days or less. Piglets are abruptly separated from their sow at weaning and are quickly transitioned from sow's milk to a plant-based diet. The effect of weaning age on the long-term development of the pig gut microbiome is largely unknown. Here, pigs were weaned at either 14, 21, or 28 days of age, and fecal samples were collected 20 times from day 4 (neonatal) through marketing at day 140. The fecal microbiome was characterized using 16S rRNA gene and shotgun metagen

Gastrointestinal microbial populations can distinguish pediatric and adolescent Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) at the time of disease diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: An estimated 15,000 children and adolescents under the age of 19 years are diagnosed with leukemia, lymphoma and other tumors in the USA every year. All children and adolescent acute leukemia patients will undergo chemotherapy as part of their treatment regimen. Fortunately, survival rates for most pediatric cancers have improved at a remarkable pace over the past three decades, and the overall survival rate is greater than 90 % today. However, significant differences in survival rate have been found in different age groups (94 % in 1-9.99 years, 82 % in ≥10 years and 76 % in ≥15 y

Dietary Polyphenols as Modulators of Bifidobacterium in the Human Gut Microbiota.

BackgroundPolyphenols-bioactive compounds abundant in plant-based foods-are increasingly recognised for their capacity to modulate the gut microbiota. As the gut microbiome plays a central role in metabolic regulation, immune function, and disease prevention, understanding how specific polyphenol subclasses influence microbial diversity and functionality remains essential. Despite growing evidence of their benefits, the precise effects of flavonoids, phenolic acids, and anthocyanins on gut microbial composition are not yet fully clarified.ObjectiveThis study aimed to evaluate the impact of die

Exploring medical food supplementation as an adjunct strategy for microbiota restoration and seizure reduction in CDKL5 deficiency disorder.

OBJECTIVES: CDKL5 deficiency disorder (CDD) is a developmental and epileptic encephalopathy characterized by early-onset, treatment-resistant seizures and severe neurodevelopmental impairment. Increasing evidence suggests that alterations in the gut-brain axis may contribute to disease pathophysiology, raising interest in microbiota-targeted interventions. In this study, we evaluated the effects of a prebiotic-based nutritional intervention on clinical outcomes, gut microbiota composition, and fatty acid profiles in individuals with CDD. METHODS: Thirteen participants with drug-resistant epil

Integrated Multiomics Reveals Gut-Brain Axis Dysregulation and Phenotype-Specific Metabolic Signatures in Children with Febrile Seizures.

Background: Febrile seizures (FSs) are the most common neurological emergency in early childhood; however, the biological basis of disease heterogeneity remains poorly understood. Although growing evidence suggests that gut-brain axis dysregulation contributes to seizure susceptibility, it remains unclear whether gut microbiota-associated metabolic disturbances are linked to clinical phenotypes, particularly simple FS (SFS) and complex FS (CFS). Methods: An integrated multiomics study was conducted in clinically characterized pediatric cohorts, comprising 50 children with FS and 50 healthy con

Gut Microbiota Composition in Maintenance Hemodialysis Patients: Associations with Sex, Age, and Body Composition.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Patients receiving maintenance hemodialysis (HD) commonly exhibit chronic low-grade inflammation, nutritional disturbances, altered body composition, and metabolic imbalance. Gut dysbiosis may contribute to these abnormalities through the gut-kidney axis; however, the relationship between the gut microbiota composition and host phenotype in HD patients remains incompletely characterized. This study aimed to characterize the gut microbiota composition in maintenance HD patients and assess its cross-sectional associations with demographic, inflammatory, nutritional, dialys

Gut, Oral, and Fungal Microbiota in Hypertension: A Multi-Compartment Systematic Review.

The gut microbiota is an established modulator of blood pressure, but the oral bacteriome and the fungal mycobiome have been examined largely in isolation from it and from each other. No previous synthesis has evaluated all three compartments within one analytical framework, or treated sex and ethnicity as primary analytical axes rather than adjustment covariates. Systematic review reported according to PRISMA 2020 and, for the synthesis, the SWiM guideline. PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus, and Web of Science were searched from inception to 30 June 2026. Five-Year Follow-Up of Photobiomodulation in Parkinson's Disease: A Case Series Exploring Clinical Stability and Microbiome Modulation.

Background: Parkinson's disease (PD) involves progressive neurodegeneration with clinical or subclinical disturbance of the gut-brain axis, including altered gastrointestinal motility and enteric nervous system involvement. Clinical studies have reported gut microbiome alterations in PD, with shifts in taxa associated with inflammatory signalling and short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) metabolism. Photobiomodulation (PBM), a non-invasive light therapy, has been investigated as a potential adjunctive treatment for PD, with proposed effects on neural, metabolic, and immune pathways.
