Short-form video, cognitive and mental health outcomes: a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Short-form video (SFV) platforms, such as TikTok, Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts, dominate online engagement among Generation Z. Their rapid, algorithm-driven and emotionally salient design raises concerns about potential associations with cognitive functioning and mental health. To our knowledge, no systematic review has synthesised evidence jointly on both cognitive and mental health outcomes in Generation Z young adults. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review in accordance with Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) 2020 and Cochran

Experiences of the attention training technique delivered in groups as treatment for anxiety and depression in patients with coronary heart disease: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Clinically significant anxiety and depression symptoms are common in patients with coronary heart disease (CHD) and associated with a range of negative outcomes. Preliminary evidence suggests that the attention training technique (ATT), a component of metacognitive therapy (MCT), delivered in a group format, is feasible and potentially effective in reducing symptoms of anxiety and depression in these patients. Patients' experiences of treatment including facilitators and barriers are useful in order to further develop effective intervention. We are not aware of any previous qualita

Cognitive Remediation in Bipolar (CRiB2): study protocol for a randomised controlled trial assessing efficacy and mechanisms of cognitive remediation therapy compared to treatment as usual.

BACKGROUND: A substantial proportion of people with bipolar disorder (BD) experience persistent cognitive difficulties associated with impairments in psychosocial functioning and a poorer disorder course. Emerging evidence suggests that cognitive remediation (CR), a psychological intervention with established efficacy in people with schizophrenia, can also benefit people with BD. Following a proof-of-concept trial showing that CR is feasible and potentially beneficial for people with BD, we are conducting an adequately powered trial in euthymic people with BD to 1) determine whether an individ

"Retrieval potentiates new learning: A theoretical and meta-analytic review": Correction to Chan, Meissner, and Davis (2018).

Reports an error in "Retrieval potentiates new learning: A theoretical and meta-analytic review" by Jason C. K. Chan, Christian A. Meissner and Sara D. Davis (Psychological Bulletin, 2018[Nov], Vol 144[11], 1111-1146). In the article, the Appendix and Supplemental Materials contained errors. Specifically, some of the data were mis-sorted, so that the effect sizes for some studies were misattributed to other studies, with most of the errors occurring in the intrusion data. These errors were confined to the table presented in the article's Appendix and Supplemental Materials, and they were not p

Can service members with mild traumatic brain injury learn to develop implementation intentions for self-identified goals?

PURPOSE: Goal achievement relies heavily on executive functions, which may be compromised following mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). Implementation intentions (II) have been found to help people act in accordance with their goals. II are written statements that describe a behavior that a person plans to enact when they encounter some form of anticipated trigger or stimulus. We evaluated the feasibility of teaching participants with mTBI to develop II for self-identified goals within the context of cognitive rehabilitation. METHODS: Soldiers with mTBI were recruited from a traumatic brain i

Language and literacy outcomes from a pilot intervention study for children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders in South Africa.

This pilot study investigated the efficacy of a classroom language and literacy intervention in children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) in the Western Cape Province of South Africa. The study forms part of a larger, ongoing study that includes metacognitive and family support interventions in addition to language and literacy training (LLT). For the LLT study, 65 nine-year-old children identified as either FASD or not prenatally exposed to alcohol, were recruited. Forty children with FASD were randomly assigned to either a LLT intervention group or FASD control group (FASD-C). Tw

Integrated Decentering: Validating an Automated Measure of Decentering Expression Across Seven Independent Samples.

Objectives. Decentering---relating to one's thoughts and emotions as passing mental events rather than being fused with them---is difficult to measure at scale. We test whether Integrated Decentering (ID), an automated measure of the decentering expressed in short reflective text, shows construct validity as one fixed scoring model. Methods. A purpose-trained language-model ensemble scored texts from seven independent samples (self-report, community, essay, diary, and online-argument samples, and two contemplative-practice cohorts). One cohort was a post-hoc secondary analysis of a registered

The association between generative AI use and university students' critical thinking: a moderated mediation model of GenAI feedback literacy and reflective thinking.

Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) has rapidly become an everyday learning resource for university students, yet evidence on whether such use is associated with stronger or weaker critical thinking is sharply divided. Recent work documents both cognitive scaffolding and "metacognitive laziness" effects, suggesting that the AI-cognition relationship is contingent on how students engage with AI-generated feedback. Drawing on the extended-mind framework, cognitive load theory and feedback-literacy theory, we test a cross-sectional moderated mediation model in which GenAI feedback literacy

Generative AI in music learning: A mixed-method study of skill development, AI dependence, and the moderating role of AI literacy.

This study examines how generative AI (Gen-AI) is associated with music learning outcomes by shaping underlying cognitive and self-regulatory mechanisms. Drawing on Self-Regulated Learning (SRL) and Cognitive Load Theory (CLT), the study investigates how students' use of Gen-AI is associated with music-specific domain skills and dependence on AI tools, and how these dual pathways are associated with the quality of musical performance. It further explores the moderating role of AI literacy in shaping these associations. A mixed-method approach was employed. Quantitative data were collected from

Schema therapy versus treatment as usual for outpatients with difficult-to-treat depression: study protocol for a parallel group randomized clinical trial (DEPRE-ST).

BACKGROUND: About one third of patients with depression are in a condition that can be termed as "difficult-to-treat". Some evidence suggests that difficult-to-treat depression is associated with a higher frequency of childhood trauma and comorbid personality disorders or accentuated features. However, the condition is understudied, and the effects of psychotherapy for difficult-to-treat depression are currently uncertain. The aim of this trial is to investigate the beneficial and harmful effects of 30 sessions of individual schema therapy versus treatment as usual for difficult-to-treat depre

Novel Psychological Formulation and Treatment of "Tic Attacks" in Tourette Syndrome.

One important, but underreported, phenomenon in Tourette syndrome (TS) is the occurrence of "tic attacks." These episodes have been described at conferences as sudden bouts of tics and/or functional tic-like movements, lasting from 15 min to several hours. They have also been described by patients in online TS communities. To date, there are no reports of tic attacks in the literature. The aim of this article is to stimulate discussion and inform clinical practices by describing the clinical presentation of 12 children (mean age 11 years and 3 months; SD = 2 years and 4 months) with TS and tic

Cardiac rehabilitation for children and young people (CardioActive): protocol for a single-blind randomised feasibility and acceptability study of a centre-based cardiac rehabilitation programme versus usual care in 11-16 years with heart conditions.

BACKGROUND: Congenital heart conditions are among the most common non-communicable diseases in children and young people (CYP), affecting 13.9 million CYP globally. While survival rates are increasing, support for young people adjusting to life with a heart condition is lacking. Furthermore, one in three CYP with heart conditions also experiences anxiety, depression or adjustment disorder, for which little support is offered. While adults are offered cardiac rehabilitation (CR) to support their mental and physical health, this is not offered for CYP.One way to overcome this is to evaluate a CR

Lessons in clinical reasoning - pitfalls, myths, and pearls: a woman brought to a halt.

OBJECTIVES: Limitations in human cognition commonly result in clinical reasoning failures that can lead to diagnostic errors. A metacognitive structured reflection on what clinical findings fit and/or do not fit with a diagnosis, as well as how discordance of data can help advance the reasoning process, may reduce such errors. CASE PRESENTATION: A 60-year-old woman with Hashimoto thyroiditis, diabetes, and generalized anxiety disorder presented with diffuse arthralgias and myalgias. She had been evaluated by physicians of various specialties and undergone multiple modalities of imaging, as we

GenAI-mediated immersive dialogue practice in liaison interpreting: a mixed-methods investigation of cognitive-affective outcomes and interactional processes.

INTRODUCTION: Liaison interpreting competence encompasses working memory management, executive control, self-efficacy, and affect regulation, yet its development remains constrained by the linguistic inconsistency and variable cognitive-affective demands of conventional peer role-play. Drawing on an integrated framework, this quasi-experimental mixed-methods study investigates whether Generative AI (GenAI)-mediated immersive dialogue practice can create a more cognitively authentic and affectively facilitative practice environment for interpreter-learners. METHOD: Seventy undergraduate studen

Can explainable AI scaffolding reduce cognitive load and enhance embodied expression? A quasi-experimental study of multilingual vocal learning in Bel Canto education.

Exploring how artificial intelligence technology can effectively support music education has become a critical issue in the digital era. This study addresses the high cognitive load and embodied expression difficulties faced by bel canto students when learning multilingual vocal works, designing and validating the educational effectiveness of an explainable AI scaffolding learning system. The study employed a 2 × 3 mixed-factor quasi-experimental design, with 64 college students from the Conservatory of Music allocated to the XAI scaffolding group and the traditional AI-assisted group through

Neurodegenerative Disease Death Certification Among National Football League Players With Dementia.

IMPORTANCE: Researchers frequently use death certificate data to evaluate occupational risks among National Football League (NFL) players, demonstrating elevated neurodegenerative mortality risk. Robust epidemiologic data suggest deaths attributable to neurodegenerative disease (NDD) are frequently underreported on death certificates, leading to substantial underascertainment of neurodegenerative mortality. Better characterization of the factors underlying neurodegenerative death certification is critical to addressing underreporting of NDDs, informing disease surveillance and resource allocat

Integrative Intelligence as an Operative Mode: Cognitive Integration through Self-Ethnographic Dialogue with AI.

This paper proposes Integrative Intelligence as an operative mode of human judgment in which temporal integration (past-present-future), contextual integration (roles, relationships, life domains), and embodied integration (body, emotion, thought, meaning-making) function simultaneously without fragmentation. It is not introduced as a new ability or developmental stage but as a mode already latent in ordinary judgment that becomes legible under particular conditions. Unlike psychometric or multiple-intelligences frameworks, this study reframes intelligence as a situationally emergent configura
