Effect of flunixin meglumine on the pharmacokinetics of enrofloxacin and marbofloxacin in preweaning calves.

BACKGROUND: Bovine respiratory disease is a major cause of illness in dairy calves. Fluoroquinolones such as enrofloxacin and marbofloxacin are commonly co-administered with flunixin meglumine, yet NSAID-related pharmacokinetic interactions in preweaning calves remain poorly defined. This study evaluated flunixin's effects on these drugs' pharmacokinetics and pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic (PK/PD) indices against key bovine respiratory pathogens of clinical relevance. METHODS: Ten healthy Holando Argentino calves (20-30 days old) received enrofloxacin (5 mg/kg intramuscularly) or marbofloxac

Hydrolases enzymes for oral biofilm reduction: Lipase, lysozyme, and amylase as promising candidates for canine oral health applications.

Oral biofilms are common in dogs and are a major cause of periodontal disease with potential systemic effects, largely due to the limited efficacy of conventional oral antiseptics against the extracellular matrix. Enzymatic degradation has emerged as a promising alternative approach that directly targets this structure. This study evaluated the individual and combined activities of four enzymes, lipase from Burkholderia cepacia (BC lipase), lipase from Candida rugosa (CR lipase), α-amylase from Bacillus licheniformis, and egg white lysozyme, against monospecies biofilms formed by eight oral-as

Streptococcus suis infection in swine: a retrospective study of 256 cases. Part II. Clinical signs, gross and microscopic lesions, and coexisting microorganisms.

A retrospective study of 256 cases of naturally acquired Streptococcus suis infections in swine submitted to the Indiana Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory from 1985 to 1989 was undertaken to describe the clinical signs, lesions, and coexisting organisms associated with S. suis serotypes 1-8 and 1/2. Infected pigs generally had clinical signs and gross lesions referable to either the respiratory system or to the central nervous system (CNS), but not both. Neurologic signs were inversely related to gross lesions in the respiratory tract (R2 = -0.19, P = 0.003), as were respiratory signs and g

Bacteria identified from deep nasopharyngeal swabs and non-endoscopic bronchoalveolar lavage in calves on farms with a history of bronchopneumonia.

BACKGROUND: We describe the occurrence of bacteria associated with bovine respiratory disease (BRD) on Austrian beef operations and compare bacterial culture results from double guarded deep nasopharyngeal swab (DNS) and non-endoscopic bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) samples. Fifty pre-weaned beef calves from 13 conveniently selected commercial beef operations with a history of BRD were sampled between April and August 2024. From each calf a DNS and a BAL sample was obtained and cultured for Pasteurella multocida, Mannheimia haemolytica, Histophilus somni, Bibersteinia trehalosi, Mannheimia spp.

Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor versus placebo in addition to penicillin G in a randomized blinded study of gram-negative pneumonia sepsis: analysis of survival and multisystem organ failure.

Sepsis is a common cause of morbidity and mortality. Neutrophils are the major defense against bacterial invasion, and granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) augments both neutrophil number and function. In our study, 160 rabbits were inoculated transtracheally with 0.5 mL of a solution containing 10(4) colony forming units per milliliter of Pasteurella multocida. Twenty-four hours later, chest x-rays and quantitative blood cultures demonstrated pneumonia and bacteremia. Therapy was then begun with penicillin G and either recombinant human G-CSF (rG-CSF; 5 to 8 micrograms/kg subcutaneou

Amoxicillin-current use in swine medicine.

Amoxicillin has become a major antimicrobial substance in pig medicine for the treatment and control of severe, systemic infections such as Streptococcus suis. The minimum inhibitory concentration 90% (MIC 90) is 0.06 μg amoxicillin/ml, and the proposed epidemiological cut-off value (ECOFF) is 0.5 μg/ml, giving only 0.7% of isolates above the ECOFF or of reduced susceptibility. Clinical breakpoints have not been set for amoxicillin against porcine pathogens yet, hence the use of ECOFFs. It has also been successfully used for bacterial respiratory infections caused by Actinobacillus pleuropneum

Results of the antimicrobial agent susceptibility study raised in a representative, cross-sectional monitoring study on a national basis.

The use of antimicrobial substances in human and veterinary medicine inevitably results in a selection pressure for drug resistance in exposed bacteria. Preventive measures, apt to avoid the consequent development of new resistances and selection for existing ones, respectively, have to be elaborated. Moreover, it has to be ensured that neither resistant bacteria nor resistance genes are spread to and consequently via the food chain. Respiratory diseases as well as mastitis in dairy cattle belong to the most frequently occurring diseases in food-producing animals. For the first time in Germany

Development and validation of a multiplex TaqMan real-time quantitative PCR assay for the simultaneous detection of six major bacterial respiratory pathogens in goats.

BACKGROUND: Respiratory disease caused by bacterial and mycoplasmal pathogens is an important threat to goat health, and mixed infections complicate etiological diagnosis. Rapid multiplex detection is therefore valuable for clinical investigation and surveillance. METHODS: Two triplex TaqMan real-time quantitative PCR (qPCR) panels were established for the simultaneous detection of six major caprine respiratory pathogens. Panel I targeted Mycoplasma ovipneumoniae (Mo), Mycoplasma mycoides subsp. capri (Mmc), and Mycoplasma capricolum subsp. capripneumoniae (Mccp), whereas Panel II targeted Pa

Diagnosing bronchopneumonia in calves. A latent class analysis of the accuracy of clinical examination, thoracic ultrasonography and bacterial culturing from bronchoalveolar lavage fluid.

Accurate detection of bronchopneumonia in calves is essential for management under field conditions. This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy and agreement of three methods for detecting bronchopneumonia: clinical examination including auscultation (CE), thoracic ultrasonographic examination (TUS) (with positivity threshold ≥1 cm consolidation depth), and bacterial culturing from bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BAL) (with a dominant or pure culture of ≥10 colonies of Pasteurella multocida, Mannheimia haemolytica, and/or Histophilus somni). Development and Validation of an In-House Indirect ELISA for Serological Detection of Gallibacterium anatis in Laying Hens Using Local Field Isolates.

Gallibacterium anatis is an emerging opportunistic pathogen associated with respiratory and reproductive tract infections in poultry, causing reduced egg production and economic losses in laying hens. Serological detection is important for surveillance; however, no validated in-house enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) based on local Indonesian isolates is available. This study aimed to develop and validate an indirect ELISA for detecting antibodies against G. anatis in laying hens. Five archived isolates were characterized by PCR targeting gyrB, gtxA, and flfA virulence-associated genes

Exploring the indoor airborne microbiome and resistome in layer barns across Alberta, Canada.

The air in poultry barns carries a diverse range of microbial communities including potential opportunistic pathogens, which are important for both animal and human health. Bacteria carrying antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) can become airborne within poultry barns and be transmitted to animals and poultry workers, presenting a serious One Health concern. This study was aimed at characterizing the microbiome and resistome of bioaerosols sampled from layer chicken barns across Alberta. In total, 15 barns (9 cage housed and 6 floor housed) were sampled in this study using a microbial air sam

Antimicrobial Resistance in Bacteria Isolated From Cats and Dogs From the Iberian Peninsula.

Pet animals are assumed to be potential reservoirs in transferring antimicrobial resistance (AMR) to humans due to the extensively applied broad-spectrum antimicrobial agents and their close contact with humans. In this study, microbiological data and antimicrobial susceptibility results of dog (n = 5,086) and cat (n = 789) clinical samples from a private Laboratory of Diagnosis in Barcelona were analyzed. Samples came from different counties of the Iberian Peninsula during 2016-2018. In dogs, clinical samples were most commonly from otitis, and in cats from wounds, respiratory tract infection

The essential oil extracted with superheated steam extraction from Cinnamomum cassia from Pakistan has potential antimicrobial and antioxidant applications.

Pharmaceutical, food, beverage, cosmetics, and other industries face severe challenges from bacterial infections and oxidative degradation of active molecules. Their prevention has led to a large use of synthetic preservatives that, however, impact negatively on human health. Natural antioxidants and antimicrobial agents are therefore actively sought, and essential oils (EOs) from different plants are among the natural products with such potentialities. In this context, aimed at finding the method of choice for producing an essential oil (EO) from a Cinnamomum cassia bark from Pakistan with su
