From the archives of the AFIP: Lung disease in premature neonates: radiologic-pathologic correlation.

Pulmonary disease is the most important cause of morbidity in preterm neonates, whose lungs are often physiologically and morphologically immature. Surfactant deficiency in immature lungs triggers a cascade of alveolar instability and collapse, capillary leak edema, and hyaline membrane formation. The term respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) has come to represent the clinical expression of surfactant deficiency and its nonspecific histologic counterpart, hyaline membrane disease. Historically, chest radiographs of infants with RDS predictably demonstrated decreased pulmonary expansion, symmetr

Differential short-term changes in GABAergic or glycinergic synaptic efficacy on rat hypoglossal motoneurons.

Using whole cell patch-clamp recording from hypoglossal motoneurons of a neonatal rat brain slice preparation, we investigated short-term changes in synaptic transmission mediated by GABA or glycine. In 1.5 mM extracellular Ca(2+) [Ca(2+)](o), pharmacologically isolated GABAergic or glycinergic currents were elicited by electrical stimulation of the reticular formation. At low stimulation frequency, glycinergic currents were larger and faster than GABAergic ones. GABAergic currents were strongly facilitated by pulse trains at 5 or 10 Hz without apparent depression. This phenomenon persisted af…

Craniofacial alterations following electrolytic lesions of the trigeminal motor nucleus in actively growing rats.

The objective of this study was to define further the role of the trigeminal motor nucleus (TMNu) in the postnatal ontogeny of the mammalian … the opposite side from all other lesioned animals was correlated with unique damage to its pontine reticular formation; this suggested that the observed morphological alterations of the craniofacial complex may have been due not only to TMNu damage, but also to changed expressions of the masticatory central pattern generator (CPG). Morphological alterations of the c …

LL37/FPR2 regulates neutrophil mPTP promoting the development of neutrophil extracellular traps in diabetic retinopathy.

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is characterized by chronic, low-grade inflammation. This state may be related to the heightened production of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) induced by high glucose (HG). Human cathelicidin antimicrobial peptide (LL37) is an endogenous ligand of G protein-coupled chemoattractant receptor formyl peptide receptor 2 (FPR2), expressed on neutrophils and facilitating the formation and stabilization of the structure of NETs. In this study, we detected neutrophils cultured under different conditions, the retinal tissue of diabetic mice, and fibrovascular epiretinal m

Closing the Loop in the Carbon Cycle: Enzymatic Reactions Housed in Metal-Organic Frameworks for CO2 Conversion to Methanol.

The preparation of value-added chemicals from carbon dioxide (CO2) can act as a way of reducing the greenhouse gas from the atmosphere. Industrially significant C1 chemicals like methanol (CH3OH), formic acid (HCOOH), and formaldehyde (HCHO) can be formed from CO2. One sustainable way of achieving this is by connecting the reactions catalyzed by the enzymes formate dehydrogenase (FDH), formaldehyde dehydrogenase (FALDH), and alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) into a single cascade reaction where CO2 is hydrogenated to CH3OH. For this to be adaptable for industrial use, the enzymes should be immobiliz

Cerebellar Inputs in the American Alligator (Alligator mississippiensis).

Crocodilians (alligators, crocodiles, and gharials) are the closet living relatives to birds and, as such, represent a key clade to understa … onavian reptiles and birds. Retrograde labeled cells were found in the spinal cord, inferior olive, reticular formation, vestibular and cerebellar nuclei, as well as in nucleus ruber and surrounding tegmentum. Additionally, we found no retrogradely labeled cells in the anterior rhombencephalon which suggest that, like other nonavian reptiles, crocodilians may lack po …

RELATIONSHIP between prandial drinking behavior and supersensitivity of salivary glands after superior salivatory nucleus lesions in RATS.

Prandial drinking, an increase in the number of drinking responses and secondary or non-homeostatic polydipsia in the presence of dry food, … l drinking. These data support the idea that there is in fact a functional link between the lateral reticular formation of the brainstem (the region associated with the SSN) and S-S salivary glands.

Thin-Section CT Features of Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis Correlated with Micro-CT and Histologic Analysis.

Purpose To elucidate the underlying lung changes responsible for the computed tomographic (CT) features of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) and to gain insight into the way IPF proceeds through the lungs and progresses over time. Materials and Methods Micro-CT studies of tissue cores obtained from explant lungs were examined and were correlated 1:1 with a CT study obtained immediately before transplantation. Samples for histologic analysis were obtained from selected cores. Results In areas with no or minimal abnormalities on CT images, small areas of increased attenuation located in or nea

Atlastin GTPases are required for Golgi apparatus and ER morphogenesis.

The hereditary spastic paraplegias (SPG1-33) comprise a cluster of inherited neurological disorders characterized principally by lower extremity spasticity and weakness due to a length-dependent, retrograde axonopathy of corticospinal motor neurons. Mutations in the gene encoding the large oligomeric GTPase atlastin-1 are responsible for SPG3A, a common autosomal dominant hereditary spastic paraplegia. Here we describe a family of human GTPases, atlastin-2 and -3 that are closely related to atlastin-1. Interestingly, while atlastin-1 is predominantly localized to vesicular tubular complexes an

The differential effects of pelvic and vagal inputs on the supraspinal cystitis viscero(noci)ceptive-related axis.

Recently the development of the cyclophosphamide (CP, 100 mg/kg/i.p.) model has added an important element to the study of neural activities accompanying cystitis genesis. CP cystitis genesis results in the dual activation of the pelvic and vagal sensory afferent systems, which in turn activate a supraspinal network comprising the ventrocaudal bulbar reticular formation (vcBRF), the sensory subdivisions of the dorsal vagal complex (DVC) and its subcortical telencephalic targets, the dorsolateral subdivision of the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BSTLd) and the nucleus centralis of the amy…

Distribution of alpha 1a-, alpha 1b- and alpha 1d-adrenergic receptor mRNA in the rat brain and spinal cord.

The technique of in situ hybridization with specific ribonucleotide probes was used to determine the distribution patterns of mRNA encoding the alpha 1a-, alpha 1b- and alpha 1d-adrenoceptor (AR) subtypes in rat brain and spinal cord. The expression pattern of alpha 1a-AR mRNA has not been reported previously, and was found to be widespread throughout the rat central nervous system. High levels were found in regions of the olfactory system, several hypothalamic nuclei, and regions of the brainstem and spinal cord, particularly in areas related to motor function. Regions expressing moderate lev

Central poststroke pain and Wallenberg's lateral medullary infarction: frequency, character, and determinants in 63 patients.

We determined t … contralateral to the infarct are referable to the crossed trigeminothalamic tract in the medullary reticular formation medial to the infarcted lateral medulla. We conclude that this argues for the theory that central pain is caused by denervation sensitivity of the "paleo"-reticulothalamic connections due to a selective "neo"-spinothalamic lesion.

Localization of type II phospholipase A2 messenger RNA and immunoactivity in human placenta and fetal membranes.

Although Type II phospholipase A2 (PLA2) immunoactivity has been identified in homogenates of human placenta and fetal membranes, there is a paucity of information concerning the sites of synthesis of this secreted PLA2 isozyme. The aim of this study, therefore, was to establish the cellular localization of Type II PLA2 messenger RNA (mRNA) in human term placental and fetal membranes by in situ hybridization. In addition, the co-localization of immunoreactive Type II PLA2 in gestational tissues was determined, and the effect of labour status and pre-eclampsia on immunolabelling intensity were
