Serological evidence of single and mixed infections of Rift Valley fever virus, Brucella spp. and Coxiella burnetii in dromedary camels in Kenya.

Camels are increasingly becoming the livestock of choice for pastoralists reeling from effects of climate change in semi-arid and arid parts of Kenya. As the population of camels rises, better understanding of their role in the epidemiology of zoonotic diseases in Kenya is a public health priority. Rift Valley fever (RVF), brucellosis and Q fever are three of the top priority diseases in the country but the involvement of camels in the transmission dynamics of these diseases is poorly understood. We analyzed 120 camel serum samples from northern Kenya to establish seropositivity rates of the t

Two novel dromedary camel bocaparvoviruses from dromedaries in the Middle East with unique genomic features.

The recent emergence of Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) coronavirus and its discovery from dromedary camels has boosted interest in the search for novel viruses in dromedaries. While bocaparvoviruses are known to infect various animals, it was not known that they exist in dromedaries. In this study, we describe the discovery of two novel dromedary camel bocaparvoviruses (DBoVs), DBoV1 and DBoV2, from dromedary faecal samples in Dubai. Among 667 adult dromedaries and 72 dromedary calves, 13.9 % of adult dromedaries and 33.3 % of dromedary calves were positive for DBoV1, while 7.0 % of a

Rift Valley fever outbreak in livestock in Kenya, 2006-2007.

We analyzed the extent of livestock involvement in the latest Rift Valley fever (RVF) outbreak in Kenya that started in December 2006 and continued until June 2007. When compared with previous RVF outbreaks in the country, the 2006-07 outbreak was the most extensive in cattle, sheep, goats, and camels affecting thousands of animals in 29 of 69 administrative districts across six of the eight provinces. This contrasted with the distribution of approximately 700 human RVF cases in the country, where over 85% of these cases were located in four districts; Garissa and Ijara districts in Northeaste

The EmsB tandemly repeated multilocus microsatellite: a new tool to investigate genetic diversity of Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato.

Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a widespread and severe zoonotic disease caused by infection with the larval stage of the eucestode Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato. The polymorphism exhibited by nuclear and mitochondrial markers conventionally used for the genotyping of different parasite species and strains does not reach the level necessary for the identification of genetic variants linked to restricted geographical areas. EmsB is a tandemly repeated multilocus microsatellite that proved its usefulness for the study of genetic polymorphisms within the species E. multilocularis, the causativ

Prevalence of Trypanosoma evansi infection and associated risk factors in camels in eastern Chad.

A cross-sectional study was conducted to estimate the prevalence of Trypanosoma evansi infection (Surra) in herds of camels from the eastern area of Chad. The risk factors associated with disease were also identified. From August 1997 to April 1998, a random sample of 2831 camels from 136 herds was selected. Blood samples were collected and examined for the presence of T. evansi using an antibody (card agglutination test-CATT/T. evansi) and a parasite detection test (buffy-coat technique-BCT). Standardized questionnaires with information about the host and management practices were collected a

Siglec-1 expression and localization in the male reproductive tract of the dromedary camel during the rutting season.

Dromedary camels are of increasing economic importance; however, their reproductive efficiency remains suboptimal, and the immunological mechanisms underlying male reproductive function are still poorly understood. Sialic acid-binding immunoglobulin-like lectin 1 (Siglec-1) is an important immunomodulatory receptor in several mammalian tissues, but its expression and localization in the male reproductive tract (MRT) of camels have not previously been investigated. This study aimed to characterize the expression and localization of Siglec-1 in the MRT of adult dromedary camels during the ruttin

Molecular insights, resistance profiling, and in silico structural modeling of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing E. coli in camels.

The global surge of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Escherichia coli (E. coli) imposes an unnoticed but significant threat, fueling antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Being a neglected host, camels suffering from subclinical mastitis (SCM) caused by ESBL-producing E. coli present a crucial one-health hazard. The current study investigated the prevalence, associated risk factors, in silico structural modeling, and antimicrobial resistance profiling of ESBL-producing E. coli strains isolated from SCM in camels. A total of 384 milk samples were evaluated by the California mastitis

Camel Milk Protein Ameliorates Ulcerative Colitis by Modulating Gut Microbiota and Amino Acid Metabolism.

The protective effects of the milk fat globule membrane (MFGM) in alleviating inflammation have been reported. However, limited attention has been paid to the key fraction of milk fat globule membrane protein (MFGMP). This study investigated the protective effects of camel MFGMP against dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced ulcerative colitis (UC) in mice. The results revealed that administering 50 mg/kg MFGMP significantly alleviated colonic inflammation, as evidenced by a marked decrease in IL-6, IL-1β, and TNF-α levels, along with pathological damage in DSS-induced mice with UC. MFGMP supple
