Genetics of alcoholism: rapid development of a new high-ethanol-preferring (HEP) strain of female and male rats.

A genetically based animal model of alcoholism has been developed in a relatively short period of 3 years. The new strain is characterized by an intense preference for ethanol over water as well as unique behavioral, neurochemical and other attributes. This new strain, termed high-ethanol-preferring (HEP) rats, was derived initially from selective cross-breeding of a variant strain of female Harlan Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats with the outbred Wistar line of male ethanol-preferring (P) rats. In this study, drinking patterns of both genders were obtained over 10 days by presenting water and ethanol

Remote psychophysical evaluation of olfactory and gustatory functions in early-stage coronavirus disease 2019 patients: the Bologna experience of 300 cases.

BACKGROUND: An objective evaluation of coronavirus disease 2019 in the first days of infection is almost impossible, as affected individuals are generally in home quarantine, and there is limited accessibility for the operator who should perform the test. To overcome this limitation, a recently validated psychophysical self-administered test was used, which can be performed remotely in the assessment of early-stage coronavirus disease 2019 patients. METHODS: Olfactory and gustatory functions were objectively assessed in 300 patients in the first 7 days from coronavirus disease 2019 symptom on

Bacteriological Profile of Patients With Stroke-Associated Pneumonia and Antimicrobial Susceptibility of Pathogens: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Stroke-associated pneumonia (SAP) is the aftermath of aspiration of oropharyngeal secretions or stomach content. Mechanical ventilation and lowered immunity and consciousness facilitate the etiopathogenesis of SAP. Antibiotic prophylaxis and repeated culture and sensitivity testing dampen the drug susceptibility patterns of the pathogens. We accomplished this study to determine the bacteriological profile of patients with SAP and the antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of the pathogenic bacteria. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was executed from August 2022 to

Defining clinical diagnosis and treatment of puerperal metritis in dairy cows: A scoping review.

Although puerperal metritis (PM) is a common infectious disease in dairy cattle, there are currently discrepancies between clinical case definitions within and between available peer-reviewed literature and on-farms practices. The inconsistent use of PM criteria across studies and on-farms practices can result in disparities related to recommendations for treating cows, affecting judicious use of antimicrobials. The objective of this study was to systematically review the peer-reviewed literature for clinical signs used for case definition of PM. The criteria used included local (e.g., vaginal

[A case of Peritonitis Caused by Wickerhamomyces anomalus (Candida pelliculosa) Related to Peritoneal Dialysis].

Fungal peritonitis is less commonly seen than bacterial peritonitis in patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis (PD), but it is a serious complication with high morbidity and mortality. It often results in catheter loss and modifying therapy from PD to hemodialysis. The causative organisms are often Candida species. In this report, a PD-associated peritonitis caused by Wickerhamomyces anomalus (Candida pelliculosa), a rare fungal infection agent with increasing clinical importance by causing different clinical pictures was presented. An outpatient peritoneal fluid culture was sent from a 48-yea

Abdominal Pain Caused by Occlusion of the Celiac Trunk and Superior Mesenteric Artery in Addition to Irritable Bowel Syndrome: Case Series and Literature Review.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a benign condition of the gastrointestinal tract causing abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhea, and/or constipation. Symptoms of IBS usually improve on passing flatus and defecation. There is no known identifiable underlying pathology; however, several risk factors are known to contribute to the development of IBS, which include a stressful lifestyle and certain foods such as bread, coffee, alcohol, pasta, and chocolates. Intestinal bacteria may also contribute to symptoms of IBS. IBS is diagnosed clinically and treated with various medications to control the sym

Epidemiological Review of Francisella Tularensis: A Case Study in the Complications of Dual Diagnoses.

INTRODUCTION: Tularemia is a rare but potentially fatal disease that develops in numerous wild and domestic animals, including lagomorphs, rodents, cats, and humans.  Francisella tularensis bacterium, the causative agent of tularemia, was identified by veterinary personnel at Fort Riley, Kansas during a routine post-mortum evaluation of a domestic feline. However, before formal diagnosis was confirmed, the sample was sent and prepared for rabies testing at the Department of Defense (DoD) U.S. Army Public Health Command Central (PHC-C), Food Analysis and Diagnostic Laboratory (FADL).  This case

Olfactory ability and object memory in three mouse models of varying body weight, metabolic hormones, and adiposity.

Physiological and nutritional state can modify sensory ability and perception through hormone signaling. Obesity and related metabolic disorders present a chronic imbalance in hormonal signaling that could impact sensory systems. In the olfactory system, external chemical cues are transduced into electrical signals to encode information. It is becoming evident that this system can also detect internal chemical cues in the form of molecules of energy homeostasis and endocrine hormones, whereby neurons of the olfactory system are modulated to change animal behavior towards olfactory cues. We hyp

Microbial Diversity and Infection Burden in Central Nervous System (CNS) Shunt and Drain Devices: A Prospective Observational Study.

INTRODUCTION: Device-associated central nervous system infections are a subgroup of healthcare-associated infections that occur when either a temporary or permanent surgically implanted device becomes a source of infection. These devices are used to treat raised intracranial pressure due to hydrocephalus. These surgically implanted devices may become a source of infection due to colonization of microbes or contamination from the hospital environment. To determine the diversity of organisms involved in infection using MALDI-TOF-based identification, to assess the antimicrobial profiles of isola

Proteinuria Is Independently Associated with Impaired Gallbladder Emptying in Biopsy-Proven Glomerular Disease with Preserved Kidney Function: A Case-Control Ultrasonographic Study.

Background/Objectives: Gallbladder emptying is primarily regulated by postprandial cholecystokinin release. In proteinuric glomerular diseases, renal loss of peptide hormones, hormone-binding proteins, or related regulatory proteins may affect biliary motility. However, gallbladder function has not been adequately investigated in individuals with proteinuric glomerular disease. This study evaluated the association between proteinuria and gallbladder emptying in patients with preserved kidney function and biopsy-proven glomerular disease. Methods: This single-center ultrasonographic case-contro

Bacterial profile and antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of isolates from inanimate objects used by healthcare professionals at Debre Markos Comprehensive Specialized Hospital, Northwest Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Healthcare-associated infections occur in patients under medical care, which is a major public health issue in hospitals worldwide. The prevalence is two to three folds higher in developing countries compared to developed countries. Inanimate objects used by healthcare professionals such as gowns, mobile phones, and stethoscopes are highly prone to bacterial contamination from the healthcare setting. In Ethiopia, there is a paucity of published data on the bacterial profile and susceptibility patterns of an isolates. OBJECTIVE: To determine the bacterial profile and antimicrobial

Asymptomatic nasopharyngeal bacterial carriage, multi-drug resistance pattern and associated factors among primary school children at Debre Berhan town, North Shewa, Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Nasopharyngeal carriage of bacteria is the main source for transmission of pathogens across individuals and horizontal spread of organisms in the community. It is an important risk factor for the acquisition of community-acquired respiratory tract infection. It is the major public health problem among children. The asymptomatic carriage of nasopharyngeal bacteria is different globally, particularly in Africa, carriage is higher in children and decreases with increasing age, 63.2% in children less than 5 years, 42.6% in children 5-15 years, and 28.0% in adults older than 15 years.

Methicillin and inducible clindamycin resistance in Gram-positive cocci among GeneXpert-positive pulmonary tuberculosis patients and apparently healthy individuals in Northwest Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) remains a major cause of morbidity and mortality globally. Gram-positive cocci (GPC) among tuberculosis patients may complicate clinical outcomes and contribute to antimicrobial resistance. Methicillin resistance and inducible clindamycin resistance mediated by macrolide-lincosamide-streptogramin B (MLSB) phenotypes pose significant therapeutic challenges by limiting effective treatment options and contributing to treatment failure. In Ethiopia, data on methicillin resistance and inducible clindamycin resistance in Gram-positive cocci among PTB patients

[A New Case of Fournier's Gangrene Caused by Actinotignum schaalii].

Actinotignum schaalii (formerly known as Actinobaculum schaalii) is an anaerobic or facultative anaerobic gram-positive bacillus that can be found commensally in the urogenital region. It can be overlooked because it grows slowly and is difficult to identify with classical microbiology laboratory techniques. Colonies become visible after 48-72 hours of incubation on blood agar in anaerobic or CO₂-rich media. While it typically causes urinary tract infection in older individuals, cases of bacteremia, vertebral osteomyelitis, endocarditis and cellulitis have been reported. Fournier's gangrene ca

History as a tool in identifying "new" old drugs.

To trace the history of a natural product and its use, it is necessary to identify to correct plant among around a half-million species. One must also know how and when harvest the plant and the morphology of location and extraction. Within the same species plant chemistry varies, depending upon climatic and soil conditions, stage of maturity and even diurnal factors. To all of these variations must be added the diagnostic ability of physicians and native healers (to distinguish between Hippocratically-trained Western physicians and whose knowledge is less formally taught). Bladder Endometriosis: Management by Cystoscopic and Laparoscopic Approaches.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Endometriosis of the urinary system accounts for less than 1% of all endometriosis, wherein bladder endometriosis is the most common. Bladder endometriosis is defined as endometriosis infiltrating the detrusor muscle and represents 85% of urinary tract endometriosis [1,2]. Segmental bladder resection/partial cystectomy is the bladder-preserving surgery and offers the complete removal of bladder endometriotic nodules [3,4]. Laparoscopic/robotic excision increases the chances of complete removal of nodules but may lead to inadvertent removal of excess bladder wall and increase t
