Chloroform extract of turmeric inhibits biofilm formation, EPS production and motility in antibiotic resistant bacteria.

In the form of biofilms, bacteria exhibit more resistance to antibiotics. Biofilm formers can withstand severe conditions and the host's defense system. Therefore, it is necessary to search for effective biofilm inhibitors. In this study, we investigated the effect of a chloroform extract of turmeric on biofilm formation against antibiotic resistant bacteria. The extract exhibited its antibiofilm effect by altering adherence, motility, extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) production and cell surface hydrophobicity; important attributes of biofilm formation. Cell attachment assays indicated

Curcumin regulates cell fate and metabolism by inhibiting hedgehog signaling in hepatic stellate cells.

Accumulating evidence indicates that Hedgehog (Hh) signaling becomes activated in chronic liver injury and plays a role in the pathogenesis of hepatic fibrosis. Hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) are Hh-responsive cells and activation of the Hh pathway promotes transdifferentiation of HSCs into myofibroblasts. Targeting Hh signaling may be a novel therapeutic strategy for treatment of liver fibrosis. We previously reported that curcumin has potent antifibrotic effects in vivo and in vitro, but the underlying mechanisms are not fully elucidated. This study shows that curcumin downregulated Patched a

Dietary supplementation of young broiler chickens with Capsicum and turmeric oleoresins increases resistance to necrotic enteritis.

The Clostridium-related poultry disease, necrotic enteritis (NE), causes substantial economic losses on a global scale. In the present study, a mixture of two plant-derived phytonutrients, Capsicum oleoresin and turmeric oleoresin (XT), was evaluated for its effects on local and systemic immune responses using a co-infection model of experimental NE in commercial broilers. Chickens were fed from hatch with a diet supplemented with XT, or with a non-supplemented control diet, and either uninfected or orally challenged with virulent Eimeria maxima oocysts at 14 d and Clostridium perfringens at 1

Downregulation effects of beta-elemene on the levels of plasma endotoxin, serum TNF-alpha, and hepatic CD14 expression in rats with liver fibrosis.

It has been demonstrated that β-elemene could protect against carbon tetrachloride (CCl(4))-induced liver fibrosis in our laboratory work, and the aim of this paper is to reveal the protective mechanisms of β-elemene. The hepatic fibrosis experimental model was induced by the hypodermical injection of CCl(4) in Wistar male rats. β-elemene was intraperitoneally administered into rats for 8 weeks (0.1 mL/100 g bodyweight per day), and plasma endotoxin content was assayed by biochemistry. The serum TNF-α level was detected using radioactive immunity. CD14 expression in rat livers was measured by

Smart nanoparticle delivery systems for curcumin: a targeted strategy to enhance anticancer efficacy and bioavailability.

Curcumin, a natural polyphenol derived from Curcuma longa, exhibits potent multimodal anticancer activity by modulating critical oncogenic pathways (e.g., NF-κB, STAT3, PI3K/Akt/mTOR), inducing apoptosis, suppressing angiogenesis, and reversing multidrug resistance (MDR). However, its clinical translation is severely hindered by poor aqueous solubility, rapid metabolism, and negligible oral bioavailability (typically <1% in serum), which result in subtherapeutic concentrations at tumor sites. Smart nanoparticle delivery systems have emerged as a transformative strategy to overcome these limita

The dynamic trajectory of circulating exosome components in high-fat diet-induced metabolic-associated steatotic liver disease and its modulation by curcuminoids.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Circulating exosomes have emerged as promising non-invasive carriers of disease biomarkers, particularly in metabolic-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). Curcuminoids derived from Curcuma longa L. have shown potential in regulating lipid metabolism. However, most studies focus on late-stage disease, overlooking the dynamic metabolic changes during early progression, and the effect of curcuminoids on circulating exosomal components remains unknown. This study aimed to characterize the dynamic trajectory of circulating exosome components in high-fat diet (HFD)-i

Protective effects of curcumin and Ginkgo biloba extract combination on a new model of Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is one of the most prevalent neurodegenerative illnesses, and yet, no workable treatments have been discovered to prevent or reverse AD. Curcumin (CUR), the major polyphenolic compound of turmeric (Curcuma longa) rhizomes, and Ginkgo biloba extract (GBE) are natural substances derived from conventional Chinese herbs that have long been shown to provide therapeutic advantages for AD. The uptake of curcumin into the brain is severely restricted by its low ability to cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB). Meanwhile, GBE has been shown to improve BBB permeability. The presen

Curcumol Alleviates Obesity-Related Insulin Resistance and Inflammation in Skeletal Muscle via the SRC/PI3K/AKT Axis.

Background/Objectives: In obese skeletal muscle, impaired insulin signalling and persistent low-grade inflammation frequently arise together, jointly driving metabolic dysfunction; yet a single intracellular node capable of simultaneously correcting both defects has not been identified. Curcumol is the principal active sesquiterpene of the traditional Chinese herb Curcuma zedoaria (Christm.) Rosc. We therefore sought to determine whether curcumol modulates obesity-driven insulin resistance and inflammatory activation in skeletal muscle, and to delineate the responsible molecular pathway.
