Acute orbital pseudotumors: classification and CT features.

Acute orbital pseudotumors are inflammatory lesions of unknown etiology that may affect part or, less often, all of the tissue within the orbit. A retrospective computed tomographic (CT) study of 16 patients demonstrated that these lesions occur in one of five specific anatomic patterns: anterior, posterior, diffuse, lacrimal, or myositic. The most common location was lacrimal followed by anterior pseudotumors. Posterior, most common location was lacrimal followed by anterior pseudotumors. Posterior, diffuse, and myositic pseudotumors were equally frequent. Localization on the basis of clinica

Lacrimal Intubation in the Management of Congenital Nasolacrimal Duct Obstruction: A Prospective Comparative Study.

BACKGROUND: Congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction (CNLDO) is a common cause of epiphora in children. Lacrimal intubation is often performed when probing fails, but the optimal approach remains debated. This study compared the outcomes of nasal endoscopy-guided and blind closed lacrimal intubation in pediatric patients with CNLDO. METHODS: This prospective comparative study (single-center retrospectively registered) was conducted on 63 eyes of 39 children under 16 years. Participants were randomly assigned to blind closed intubation (n = 31) or nasal endoscopy-guided intubation (n = 32). Ou

Extension of Masses Involving the Lacrimal Sac to Above the Medial Canthal Tendon.

PURPOSE: Retention mucoceles of the lacrimal sac almost always expand below the medial canthal tendon (MCT), whereas the very much rarer malignancies involving the lacrimal sac may progress to form a mass above the tendon. In this study, the incidence of malignancy was determined for patients with a preoperative decision to undergo biopsy for a clinically suspect, hard lacrimal sac mass, together with the proportion having a tumor extending above the MCT. METHODS: Patients thought-on the basis of having a firm, immobile mass centered on the lacrimal sac fossa-to possibly have lacrimal sac mal

[Ocular infections of the elderly].

A CLINICAL ASPECT DEPENDING ON THE PHYSIOPATHOGENESIS: Ocular infections are a frequent motive for ophthalmological consultations in geriatric settings because of the mechanical factors related to age (modifications in palpebral dynamics and lacrymal function) and in local and general immune factors leading to the rapid and/or more severe development of infections. The mechanism of microbial contamination of the eye also determines the clinical damage: predominantly local (dirty hands, traumas) with involvement of the surface tissues (conjunctive and cornea) or general, hematogenic or neurogen
