Microbial metabolic potential for carbon degradation and nutrient (nitrogen and phosphorus) acquisition in an ombrotrophic peatland.

This study integrated metagenomic and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopic approaches to investigate microbial metabolic potential for organic matter decomposition and nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) acquisition in soils of an ombrotrophic peatland in the Marcell Experimental Forest (MEF), Minnesota, USA. This analysis revealed vertical stratification in key enzymatic pathways and taxa containing these pathways. Metagenomic analyses revealed that genes encoding laccases and dioxygenases, involved in aromatic compound degradation, declined in relative abundance with depth, while the r

Intensified nutrients removal in constructed wetlands by integrated Tubifex tubifex and mussels: Performance and mechanisms.

The synergy of Tubifex tubifex (T. tubifex) and mussels on SFCWs (named SFCW-MT) performance was well studied in laboratory throughout a year. The SFCW-MT were steady operated with high TN and TP treatment, with the removal efficiencies of 37.85 ± 5.22% and 39.26 ± 5.20% even in winter. The mussels had excellent NH4-N removal efficiency, and avoid the shortage of NH4-N removal with T. tubifex in winter. Simultaneously, the SFCW-MT improved the NO3-N treatment by 51% than that in control group. The plant growth was improved in SFCW-MT, which reflected in the improvement of total chlorophyll con

Metagenomic Insights into Microbial Functional Potential Associated with Soil Carbon, Nitrogen, and Phosphorus Cycling Along an Elevational Gradient in a Warm-Temperate Forest.

Soil microbial functional potential is crucial to maintaining forest productivity and ecosystem functions. However, how microbially mediated soil nutrient cycling responds to environmental changes, particularly those caused by variations in elevation, remains poorly understood. Using the natural temperature gradient in a temperate mountain forest, this study investigated the differences in functional microbial groups and functional genes involved in soil carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus cycling along the elevation gradient, and analyzed the associations between environmental factors and these d

Yeast-enhanced activated sludge for improved nitrogen removal in wastewater treatment: Focus on dissolved organic nitrogen degradation.

Dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) in effluent of wastewater treatment plants (WWTP), particularly hydrophilic DON, is usually more effective than dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) in stimulating phytoplankton growth and increases the risk of eutrophication in receiving waterbodies. Proteins, amino acids, and nucleic acids, which are the main sources of DON in the effluent, are produced during the hydrolysis of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) in activated sludge. Herein, a yeast strain Candida tropicalis O2, which was highly efficient in degrading DON in EPS was screened. Within 48-h b

Responses of aquatic organisms downstream from WWTPs to disinfectants and their by-products during the COVID-19 pandemic, Wuhan.

The outbreak of COVID-19 has led to the large-scale usage of chlorinated disinfectants in cities. Disinfectants and disinfection by-products (DBPs) enter rivers through urban drainage and surface runoff. We investigated the variations in residual chlorine, DBPs, and different aquatic organisms in the Hanjiang, Fuhe, and Qinglinghe Rivers in Wuhan during the COVID-19 pandemic. The sampling sites were from the wastewater treatment plant outlets to the downstream drinking water treatment plant intakes. Total residual chlorine and DBPs (dichloromethane and trichloromethane) detected in the river w

Wastewater treatment plant effluent alters particle-associated bacterial assemblages in an intermittent stream.

Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTPs) can be point-sources of nutrients, organic matter, anthropogenic contaminants, and microbes to lotic environments, and the input of WWTP effluent can alter the activity and composition of stream microbial assemblages in the benthos and water column. Within the stream benthos, fine particulate matter (FPM) supports especially high levels of microbial activity, but the effect of WWTP effluents on the microbial communities specifically associated with benthic FPM in rivers has not been studied. The present work sought to address this knowledge gap by analyzing

Spatial ecology of the Neisseriaceae family in the human oral cavity.

The human oral microbiome is a diverse ecosystem in which bacterial species have evolved to occupy specific niches within the oral cavity. The Neisseriaceae family, which includes human oral species in the genera Neisseria, Eikenella, Kingella, and Simonsiella, plays a significant role in both commensal and pathogenic relationships. In this study, we investigate the distribution and functional adaptations of Neisseriaceae species across oral habitats, focusing on their site tropisms and ecological roles. We employed a metapangenomic approach in which a curated set of reference genomes represen

Ca(H2PO4)2 and MgSO4 activated nitrogen-related bacteria and genes in thermophilic stage of compost.

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of Ca(H2PO4)2 and MgSO4 on the bacterial community and nitrogen metabolism genes in the aerobic composting of pig manure. The experimental treatments were set up as control (C), 1% Ca(H2PO4)2 + 2% MgSO4 (CaPM1), and 1.5% Ca(H2PO4)2 + 3% MgSO4 (CaPM2), which were used at the end of composting for potting trials. The results showed that Ca(H2PO4)2 and MgSO4 played an excellent role in retaining nitrogen and increasing the alkali-hydrolyzed nitrogen (AN), available phosphorus (AP), and available potassium (AK) contents of the composts. Adding Ca

Long-Term Survival of Synechococcus and Heterotrophic Bacteria without External Nutrient Supply after Changes in Their Relationship from Antagonism to Mutualism.

Marine phytoplankton and heterotrophic bacteria share a very close but usually changeable relationship. However, the ultimate fate of their unstable relationship on a long-term scale is unclear. Here, the relationship between Synechococcus and heterotrophic bacterial communities underwent a dramatic shift from antagonism to commensalism and eventually to mutualism during long-term cocultivation. The relationship change is attributed to the different (even opposite) effects of diverse bacterial members on Synechococcus and the ratio of beneficial to harmful bacteria. Different bacterial members

Regulation of nitrous oxide reductase genes by NasT-mediated transcription antitermination in Bradyrhizobium diazoefficiens.

In Bradyrhizobium diazoefficiens, maximal expression of the nitrous oxide reductase gene (nosZ) requires oxygen limitation and the presence of a nitrogen oxide. The putative transcription antiterminator NasT is a positive regulator of nosZ; but in the absence of nitrate, NasT is counteracted by the nitrate sensor NasS. Here, we examined the NasT-mediated mechanism of nosRZDFYLX gene cluster expression. We mapped two transcription start sites of nosR and identified two potential hairpins, H1 and H2, within the 5'-leader of nosR transcripts. Electrophoretic mobility shift assay showed that NasT

Potential survival strategies of novel comammox and nitrite-oxidizing Nitrospira synthesizing osmoprotectants in a wastewater microbiome treating high-ammonia brackish landfill leachate.

BACKGROUND: In the late stages of landfill operation, leachate becomes brackish and contains high concentrations of ammonia with limited organic carbon. At leachate treatment facilities, it is typically subjected to nitrification followed by denitrification, with methanol supplied as an external electron donor. This unique environment may harbor novel microorganisms, including nitrifiers. Although a variety of microorganisms are involved in nitrification, their substrate specificity and salinity tolerance remain insufficiently understood. In this study, a genome-centric metagenome analysis was

Metagenomic insights into mechanisms of coral larval settlement induction and inhibition by marine biofilms.

BACKGROUND: Biofilms are essential to larval settlement in many marine invertebrates, yet the mechanisms driving settlement induction or inhibition in corals remain poorly resolved. This challenge lies in the vast taxonomic and functional diversity of marine biofilms, making it difficult to identify cues associated with settlement. To address this, we analysed the metagenomes of biofilms used to induce settlement (attachment and metamorphosis) of four broadcast-spawning non-acroporid coral species: Dipsastrea favus, Platygyra sinensis, Echinophyllia aspera and Porites lobata. Biofilms were dev

Unraveling the diversity and functional potential of cyanosphere microbiomes assembled from terrestrial cyanobacteria.

The cyanosphere is composed of non-cyanobacterial microorganisms living within the exopolysaccharide sheath of cyanobacteria, interacting with the cyanobacterial hosts and their surrounding environment. Understanding the interactions between cyanobacteria and their cyanospheres can help predict the success of terrestrial cyanobacteria in providing ecosystem services in nutrient-poor environments. However, knowledge of the microbial diversity and functions within the cyanosphere remains limited. Here, we used metagenomic sequencing to reconstruct 415 metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) from cya

Distinct roles of granules and flocs in aerobic granular sludge processes.

Aerobic Granular Sludge (AGS) is an innovative and efficient biotechnology for wastewater treatment that has been successfully applied on full-scale worldwide. Full-scale municipal AGS systems typically contain both granular sludge (granules) and flocculent sludge (flocs). Studies on the different roles of granules and flocs remain limited. In this study, a laboratory-scale AGS reactor fed with complex synthetic wastewater was operated to simulate full-scale AGS systems and to study the different functional roles of granules and flocs. The laboratory reactor achieved a coexistence of granules

Microbial Community Imbalance Drives Nitrous Oxide Emissions from Strongly Acidic Soil-Insights from a Laboratory Experiment with Microbial Inhibitors.

Nitrous oxide (N2O) is a potent greenhouse gas with intensive emissions from acidic soil. This study explored the impact of the disruption of the microbial balance from microbial inhibitors (streptomycin and cycloheximide) on soil's N2O emission and nitrogen (N) dynamics. Under all the conditions examined, biotic processes accounted for 96-98% of total N2O emissions. High concentrations of streptomycin (6 and 10 mg g-1) reduced N2O emissions from 2.24 μg kg-1 h-1 to 1.93 μg kg-1 h-1 and 2.12 μg kg-1 h-1, respectively, whereas lower concentrations (2 and 4.5 mg g-1) increased emissions from 2.2

Thiohalorhabdus methylotropha sp. nov., an extremely halophilic autotrophic methylotiotroph from hypersaline lakes.

So far, there have been no reports of trimethylamine (TMA)-utilizing extremely halophilic microorganisms in hypersaline habitats. Our aerobic enrichments at 4 M total Na+ with 5 mM TMA inoculated with surface sediments from hypersaline soda (at pH 9.5) or chloride-sulfate (at pH 7) lakes in southwestern Siberia were successful only for the latter. The initial enrichment included both bacteria and haloarchaea but only the bacterial component was able to grow as a pure culture with TMA. Strain Cl-TMA forms a new-species lineage within the genus Thiohalorhabdus which includes extremely halophilic

Microbiome of High-Rank Coal Reservoirs in the High-Production Areas of the Southern Qinshui Basin.

To study the distribution features of microorganisms in distinct hydrological areas of the southern Qinshui Basin, C-N-S microorganisms were studied using 16S RNA sequencing, metagenome sequencing and geochemical technologies, showing the high sensitivity of microorganisms to the hydrodynamic dynamics of coal. The hydrodynamic intensity of the #3 coal gradually decreased from the runoff areas to the stagnant areas. The stagnant zones have higher reservoir pressure, methane content, δ13CDIC and TDS and lower SO42-, Fe3+ and NO3- concentrations than the runoff areas. C-N-S-cycling microorganisms

Microalgal-bacterial biofilms for wastewater treatment: Operations, performances, mechanisms, and uncertainties.

Microalgal-bacterial biofilms have been increasingly considered of great potential in wastewater treatment due to the advantages of microalgal-bacterial synergistic pollutants removal/recovery, CO2 sequestration, and cost-effective biomass-water separation. However, such advantages may vary widely among different types of microalgal-bacterial biofilms, as the biofilms could be formed on different shapes and structures of attachment substratum, generating "false hope" for certain systems in large-scale wastewater treatment if the operating conditions and pollutants removal properties are evalua
