OBJECTIVE: Rupture of glutaraldehyde-fixed porcine aortic roots has been reported, but the mechanism and incidence of this complication is unknown. This study evaluates the clinical outcomes and the risk of dilation and rupture of porcine aortic roots after implantation.

OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated swine and bovine pulmonary visceral pleura (PVP) as a vascular patch. Venous patches are frequently used in surgery for repair or reconstruction of veins. Autologous patches are often limited by the number and dimension of donor tissue and can result in donor complications. Bovine pericardium is the most common heterologous patch used by vascular surgeons. Researchers, however, are continually seeking to improve heterologous and synthetic patches for improved outcome.
METHODS: The PVP was peeled from swine and bovine lungs and cross-linked with glutaraldehyde.

Radiographers process X-ray films using developer and fixer solutions that contain chemicals known to cause or exacerbate asthma. Amebiasis is due to invasion of the colonic mucosa by the enteric protozoan Entamoeba histolytica. The biology of the parasite and the pathogenic mechanisms of E. histolytica have been extensively studied. Recent studies provide new insights into the mechanism by which amebas colonize the gut, interact with bacterial flora, adhere to and lyse tissue, and combat the host's inflammatory response. Elucidation of the biochemical and cellular bases of the pathogenesis of disease caused by E. histolytica may lead to the development of an immunologic or pharmacologic means of prophylaxis.

Organs from donors after controlled circulatory death (DCD III) exhibit a higher risk for graft dysfunction due to an initial period of warm ischemia.
