Molecular characteristic of antimicrobial resistance of Salmonella Gallinarum isolates from chickens in Korea, 2014 to 2018.

Fowl typhoid (FT), which is caused by Salmonella enterica serovar Gallinarum (S. Gallinarum), leads to high morbidity and acute or subacute mortality in chickens of all ages. Although a live S. Gallinarum 9R vaccine was introduced in 2001 for commercial layer chickens in Korea, until recently, a variety of antimicrobials were widely used to prevent or treat FT. In this study, we investigated antimicrobial resistance in S. Gallinarum strains isolated from 2014 to 2018 and characterized the multidrug-resistant (MDR) strains to better understand the resistance trends in recent isolates. A total o

Comparative Sequence Analysis of Multidrug-Resistant IncA/C Plasmids from Salmonella enterica.

Determinants of multidrug resistance (MDR) are often encoded on mobile elements, such as plasmids, transposons, and integrons, which have the potential to transfer among foodborne pathogens, as well as to other virulent pathogens, increasing the threats these traits pose to human and veterinary health. Our understanding of MDR among Salmonella has been limited by the lack of closed plasmid genomes for comparisons across resistance phenotypes, due to difficulties in effectively separating the DNA of these high-molecular weight, low-copy-number plasmids from chromosomal DNA. To resolve this prob

Detection and Molecular Characterization of Escherichia coli Strains Producers of Extended-Spectrum and CMY-2 Type Beta-Lactamases, Isolated from Turtles in Mexico.

Multidrug-resistant bacteria are a growing problem in different environments and hosts, but scarce information exists about their prevalence in reptiles. The aim of this study was to analyze the resistance mechanisms, molecular typing, and plasmid content of cefotaxime-resistant (CTX(R)) Escherichia coli isolates recovered from cloacal samples of 71 turtles sheltered in a herpetarium in Mexico. CTX(R)-E. coli were recovered in 11 of 71 samples (15.5%), and one isolate/sample was characterized. Extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing E. coli isolates were detected in four samples (5.6%):

Molecular characterization of multidrug-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates.

Klebsiella pneumoniae is an important cause of healthcare-associated infections worldwide. Selective pressure, the extensive use of antibiotics, and the conjugational transmission of antibiotic resistance genes across bacterial species and genera facilitate the emergence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) K. pneumoniae. Here, we examined the occurrence, phenotypes and genetic features of MDR K. pneumoniae isolated from patients in intensive care units (ICUs) at the First Affiliated Hospital of Xiamen University in Xiamen, China, from January to December 2011. Thirty-eight MDR K. pneumoniae strains w

Inadequate waste management drives the spread of antimicrobial resistance across the watershed of a large African city.

Rapid urbanization in the Global South consistently outpaces sanitation infrastructure, transforming urban rivers into AMR reservoirs. Yet watershed-scale quantification of resistomes in such settings remains scarce, limiting exposure risk assessment and intervention planning. Here we present the most detailed spatial baseline for waterborne AMR in sub-Saharan Africa, using the Akaki River (Addis Ababa, Ethiopia) as a model system for rapidly urbanizing megacity watersheds with inadequate sanitation. We sampled 38 sites across an extreme pollution gradient during the dry season, when low flow

Gene expression profiling of antibiotic resistance genes in multidrug-resistant bacteria in Northeast Syria: Evolving challenges in a conflict-affected region.

BACKGROUND: Conflict-affected regions represent under-characterized reservoirs for antimicrobial resistance (AMR), where healthcare disruption, population displacement, limited diagnostic capacity, and sustained antibiotic exposure may accelerate the emergence and dissemination of multidrug-resistant (MDR) pathogens. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying resistance gene regulation in Syria remain poorly characterized. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional quantitative study in hospitals across Northeast Syria between June 2023 and September 2025. A total of 910 patients were screened

Virtual screening of plant-derived molecules against zinc-dependent imipenemases in class B metallo-β-lactamases of Acinetobacter baumannii.

Metallo-β-lactamases (MBLs), enzymes of class B, employ zinc ions to degrade β-lactam antibiotics such as penicillins, cephalosporins, carbapenems, and cephamycins. Carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (CRAB) is linked to the existence of carbapenemase enzymes such as oxacillinase and MBL. The most prevalent resistance mechanisms include imipenemases (IMP), verona integron-encoded MBL, and New Delhi MBL-1. The effectiveness of current antibiotics against the MBL enzyme is limited due to the presence of metal ions, underscoring the need for new antimicrobial agents. Recent research has
