Disseminated protothecosis in a dog coinfected with Hepatozoon canis and Ehrlichia canis.

Protothecosis is a severe, emerging opportunistic infection caused by the saprophytic, achlorophyllous microalgae of the genus Prototheca. Though uncommon, human and animal cases are increasing worldwide, making awareness of this fungal-like pathogen important in both human and veterinary medicine. We report a fatal case of disseminated protothecosis caused by P. wickherhamii in a 10-year-old, spayed, female, mixed-breed collie dog. Clinical signs included uveitis, ulcerated cutaneous nodules on the limbs and face, pododermatitis with nail loss and, lymphadenomegaly in the prescapular and popl

Bioinspired pH-Responsive Microalgal Hydrogels for Oral Insulin Delivery with Both Hypoglycemic and Insulin Sensitizing Effects.

The oral form of insulin is more convenient and has better patient compliance than subcutaneous or intravenous insulin. Current oral insulin preparations, however, cannot overcome the enzyme barrier, chemical barrier, and epithelial barrier of the gastrointestinal tract completely. In this study, a microalgae-based oral insulin delivery strategy (CV@INS@ALG) was developed using Chlorella vulgaris (CV)-based insulin delivery system cross-linking with sodium alginate (ALG). CV@INS@ALG could overcome the gastrointestinal barrier, protect insulin from harsh gastric conditions, and achieve a pH-res

Metal (As, Cd, Hg, and CH3Hg) bioaccumulation from water and food by the benthic amphipod Leptocheirus plumulosus.

Benthic invertebrates may be exposed to metals in pore water, overlying water, ingested sediments, and other food particles. Rates and routes of metal exposure have important implications for predicting toxicity and interpreting toxicity test results. For the standard test amphipod Leptocheirus plumulosus, radiotracer techniques were used to quantify rates of Cd, As, Hg(II), and CH(3)Hg bioaccumulation from water and from suspension feeding on labeled microalgae. Measured parameters were incorporated into a bioaccumulation model to predict steady-state metal concentrations in L. plumulosus and

The effect of elevated temperature on the toxicity of the laboratory cultured dinoflagellate Ostreopsis lenticularis (Dinophyceae).

Ostreopsis lenticularis Fukuyo 1981, is the major benthic dinoflagellate vector implicated in ciguatera fish poisoning in finfish on the southwest coast of Puerto Rico. Clonal laboratory cultures of O. lenticularis (clone 301) exposed to elevated temperatures (30-31 degrees C) for 33 and 54 days showed significant increases in the quantity of extractable toxin they produced as compared to their toxicities versus cells grown at temperatures of 25-26 degrees C. O lenticularis samples collected directly from the field following exposure to elevated temperatures for comparable periods of time also

New insight on the identification of benzo(a)pyrene and benzo(a)anthracene metabolites in different components of microalgal culture using HPLC-ESI-QqQ-MS/MS.

Benzo(a)pyrene (BaP) and benzo(a)anthracene (BaA) are environmental pollutants with a well-known toxicity; however, documented information is not enough to fully understand their biodegradation pathways in Selenastrum capricornutum, a microalga that degrades polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) very efficiently. Thus, this research aimed to identify the BaP and BaA metabolite formation in the degradation process performed by S. capricornutum, focusing on different microalgal components (biomass, liquid medium, and microalgal extracts). Hence, extracts containing metabolites isolated from mi

Immense essence of excellence: marine microbial bioactive compounds.

Oceans have borne most of the biological activities on our planet. A number of biologically active compounds with varying degrees of action, such as anti-tumor, anti-cancer, anti-microtubule, anti-proliferative, cytotoxic, photo protective, as well as antibiotic and antifouling properties, have been isolated to date from marine sources. The marine environment also represents a largely unexplored source for isolation of new microbes (bacteria, fungi, actinomycetes, microalgae-cyanobacteria and diatoms) that are potent producers of bioactive secondary metabolites. Extensive research has been don

A dual-function Savinase-catalyzed strategy for enhanced bioactive protein hydrolysate production from Nannochloropsis oculata for personal care and cosmetic applications.

Microalgae are a sustainable source of bioactive proteins for personal care and cosmetic applications. Conventional alkaline extraction can achieve high protein recovery but relies on harsh chemical conditions that often compromise protein integrity, reduce bioactivity, and raise environmental concerns. Moreover, the extracted proteins often require additional enzymatic hydrolysis to enhance their functionality, thus increasing process complexity. This study proposes a dual-function Savinase-assisted in situ extraction strategy for the simultaneous extraction and functionalization of protein f

Synergistic Effect of Indole-3-Acetic Acid and Homogeneously Dispersed Ulva prolifera-Derived Carbon Quantum Dots in Enhancing CO2 Fixation, Biomass Production, and Macromolecules in Chlorella vulgaris.

To address light attenuation caused by self-shading in dense microalgal cultures within photobioreactors, this study proposes a synergistic strategy employing Ulva prolifera-derived carbon quantum dots (U-CQDs) combined with indole-3-acetic acid (IAA). Hydrothermally synthesized U‑CQDs exhibiting fluorescence emission at 580 nm were homogeneously suspended in the culture, converting UV‑blue light into orange‑red wavelengths readily absorbed by microalgae, thereby improving light distribution uniformity. The combination of 1 mg·L-1 U-CQDs and 5 mg·L-1 IAA increased biomass production to 2.17 g·

Aspartame induces hormesis-toxicity switch in microalgal‑bacterial granular sludge: Community assembly and functional gene responses.

Based on the distribution of aspartame in anaerobic digestion effluent (ADE) from food waste, this study explored the potential application of microalgae-bacterial granular sludge (MBGS) for treating ADE containing aspartame. While previous studies have focused on toxicity, the core scientific question of this work is to elucidate the adaptive regulatory mechanisms that govern MBGS performance under varying aspartame stresses. Notably, MBGS exhibited broad adaptive tolerance to varying aspartame concentrations, displaying a typical hormetic response: low-level aspartame exposure exerted a stim

Engineering Chlorella-based consortia for sustainable food wastewater treatment: nutrient recovery, pollutant degradation and advanced harvesting.

Microalgae-based bioremediation of wastewater enables simultaneous nutrient removal and production of value-added biomass. This study systematically evaluated three geographically distinct Chlorella sp. strains for semi-continuous treatment of food wastewater, addressing critical challenges that hinder practical application. All strains demonstrated substantial nutrient removal (NO3--N > 73%, TP > 78%), with film-forming Chlorella sp. CQ uniquely sustaining complete nitrate elimination. This strain simultaneously produced biomass in which essential amino acids accounted for 40% of total amino

A Low-Dimensional X-ρ-A Allocation Model for Predicting Light-Dependent Biomass, Protein, and Lipid Dynamics in TAP Batch Cultures of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii CC-400.

Microalgae are promising platforms for producing biomass and biochemicals, but changes in component concentrations may reflect biomass accumulation, shifts in composition, or both. This study developed a low-dimensional X-ρ-A allocation model for jointly describing and predicting dry biomass (X), protein (P), and lipid (L) dynamics. The model was parameterized and evaluated using mixotrophic Tris-acetate-phosphate (TAP) batch cultures of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii strain CC-400. The model uses two composition-derived indices: ρ, the fraction of dry biomass represented by the measured protein-li

Enhancement of microalgal CO2 fixation in photobioreactors by means of spiral flow vortices.

Microalgae have received a lot of interest as a sustainable solution for carbon dioxide fixation due to their great efficiency in capturing CO2 and converting it into valuable biomass, making them a promising tool for mitigating climate change and expanding carbon capture technology. This study examines the efficacy of fixed shaped portable conical helix baffles (PCHB) in enhancing gas-liquid mixing to promote microalgal growth in column photobioreactors (PBRs). Flat (90° angle from cone surface), round, and inclined (60° angle from cone surface) baffles were compared for performance. Modeling

Stability and Recovery of Palytoxin and Ovatoxin‑a.

Palytoxin and ovatoxins belong to a class of marine toxins identified in soft corals and microalgae, Palythoa spp. and Ostreopsis spp., respectively. Several documented events have resulted in human exposure to aerosolized toxins that led to significant respiratory distress. It has been reported that processing of samples containing palytoxin and ovatoxin during analysis can lead to significant analyte recovery issues due to a variety of parameters. In this study, systematically designed experiments, monitored by LC-MS/MS, were used to evaluate palytoxin and ovatoxin-a stability and recovery,

In Situ Reduction of Silver Nanoparticles/Urushiol-Based Polybenzoxazine Composite Coatings with Enhanced Antimicrobial and Antifouling Performances.

Marine anti-fouling coatings represent an efficient approach to prevent and control the marine biofouling. However, a significant amount of antifouling agent is added to improve the static antifouling performance of the coatings, which leads to an issue whereby static antifouling performance conflicts with eco-friendly traits. Herein, this work reports an in situ reduction synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) within polymers to produce composite coatings, aiming to solve the aforementioned issue. Firstly, urushiol-based benzoxazine monomers were synthesized by the Mannich reaction, using
