The duration of action of mivacurium was evaluated during a modified neurolept anaesthesia in 17 patients heterozygous for the usual and the atypical plasma cholinesterase (pChe) gene (E1uE1a) and in five patients homozygous for the atypical gene (E1aE1a). The neuromodulatory action of chlorothiazide (CTZ) was investigated in isolated rabbit bronchial smooth muscle (BSM) segments contracted with electrical field stimulation (ES). A 7-year-old girl presented at a university hospital with ptosis of the left eye. This resolved spontaneously within 4 weeks but then the right eye became similarly affected but responded to prostigmine. Left hypertropia with restriction of the right inferior rectus, mild exophthalmos, non-tender diffuse enlargement of the thyroid, normal thyroid function tests, anti-thyroglobulin, and anti-microsomal antibodies indicated an association of autoimmune thyroiditis and ocular myasthenia. A 36-year-old woman underwent thymomectomy and left pneumonectomy with total pleurectomy for stage IVa invasive thymoma without myasthenia gravis. Six years later, a crisis of myasthenia gravis developed associated with multiple lung nodules. Steroid therapy induced remarkable regression of the lung nodules that has persisted for more than 11 months. BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The use of analgosedatives in critically ill patients carries the risk of impairing gastrointestinal (GI) propulsion and could thereby lead to sepsis. The gut microbiota can influence GI motility, but whether GI microbial dysbiosis modifies GI peristalsis impairment by analgosedative drugs has not yet been analysed.
