Role of carotid bodies in control of the neuroendocrine response to exercise.

This study was aimed at assessing the role of carotid body function in neuroendocrine and glucoregulatory responses to exercise. The carotid bodies and associated nerves were removed (CBR, n = 6) or left intact (Sham, n = 6) in anesthetized dogs >16 days before experiments, and infusion and sampling catheters were implanted. Conscious dogs were studied at rest and during 150 min of exercise. Isotopic dilution was used to assess glucose production (R(a)) and disappearance (R(d)). Arterial glucagon was reduced in CBR compared with Sham at rest (29 +/- 3 vs. 47 +/- 3 pg/ml). During exercise, gluc

Middle ear adenoma is an amphicrine tumor: why call it adenoma?

Middle ear adenoma (MEA) is a rare tumor postulated to take origin from the lining epithelium of the middle ear cavity. The authors report on a case of MEA arising in a 53-year old woman suffering from a sensation of fullness in her left ear, otalgia, and light left-sided hearing loss. Histopathologically, the lesion was composed of cuboidal and polygonal cells displaying a trabecular, tubulo-glandular, and solid pattern of growth. Immunohistochemically, neoplastic cells diffusely stained with anti-vimentin antibodies and were focally positive for chromogranin A, neuron-specific enolase, lysoz

Expression of the chemokine receptor CXCR2 in normal and neoplastic neuroendocrine cells.

BACKGROUND: Chemokines effect their proinflammatory and growth regulatory roles through interaction with serpentine receptors. One such receptor, CXCR2, binds multiple CXC chemokines, including interleukin 8, GRO-alpha, GRO-beta, GRO-gamma, and NAP-2. We have previously identified CXCR2 expression on myeloid cells, notably mature granulocytes, and projection neurons. OBJECTIVE: To determine the expression of CXCR2 by cells of the neuroendocrine system. DESIGN: Archival specimens from normal neuroendocrine tissues and their malignant counterparts were analyzed by immunohistochemistry with mon

Central actions of corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) on behavioral, neuroendocrine, and cardiovascular regulation: brain corticoid receptor involvement.

The effect of intracerebroventricular (icv) infused corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH), 300 ng, infused at a rate of 16.67 ng/min during 18 min and its relation to the functioning of brain corticoid receptors was investigated in freely moving rats in their home cages. Behavior was sampled before, during, and after the CRH infusion. Cardiovascular measurements were made via a chronically implanted catheter in the descending aorta. Blood samples were withdrawn to determine adrenal hormone concentration. Central administration of the brain mineralocorticoid-like receptor (MR) antagonist (RU 28

The gut-brain axis in health neuroscience: implications for functional gastrointestinal disorders and appetite regulation.

Over the past few years, scientific interest in the gut-brain axis (i.e., the bidirectional communication system between the gastrointestinal tract and the brain) has exploded, mostly due to the identification of the gut microbiota as a novel key player in this communication. However, important progress has also been made in other aspects of gut-brain axis research, which has been relatively underemphasized in the review literature. Therefore, in this review, we provide a comprehensive, although not exhaustive, overview of recent research on the functional neuroanatomy of the gut-brain axis an

Neurocristopathy, neuroendocrine pathology and the APUD concept.

The neurosecretory cells of the hypothalamus, and the cells of the pituitary gland and the pineal, are here grouped together as a central neuroendocrine division of the APUD series. The larger, peripheral division comprises the remainder of the original series. All the cells are proven or presumptive derivatives of neuroectoderm so that, with the present exception of the parathyroid gland and its products, peptide hormone endocrinology becomes neuroendocrinology. It follows that the pathology of the APUD cell series must be regarded as neuroendocrine and it is suggested that it can best be exp

Effect of posterior pituitary denervation (PPD) on prolactin (PRL) and alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (alpha-MSH) secretion of lactating rats.

Previous data have clearly suggested that the posterior pituitary (PP), consisting of neural lobe (NL) and intermediate lobe (IL), has a role in the control of anterior pituitary PRL secretion. However, basic aspects of this regulatory mechanism like (1), the role of an intact hypothalamic innervation of the PP as well as (2) the site of production of previously found PRL releasing substance(s) have not yet been characterized. Denervation of the PP (PPD) is an effective method for having a selective lesion of the innervation of PP, indeed, PPD results in a disappearance of neurosecretory mater

Specificity in the interaction of high-voltage-activated Ca2+ channel types with Ca2+-dependent afterhyperpolarizations in magnocellular supraoptic neurons.

Magnocellular oxytocin (OT) and vasopressin (VP) neurons express an afterhyperpolarization (AHP) following spike trains that attenuates firing rate and contributes to burst patterning. This AHP includes contributions from an apamin-sensitive, medium-duration AHP (mAHP) and from an apamin-insensitive, slow-duration AHP (sAHP). These AHPs are Ca2+ dependent and activated by Ca2+ influx through voltage-gated Ca2+ channels. Across central nervous system neurons that generate Ca2+-dependent AHPs, the Ca2+ channels that couple to the mAHP and sAHP differ greatly, but for magnocellular neurosecretory

Cellular localization of somatostatin in endocrine-like cells and neurons of the rat with special references to the A1-cells of the pancreatic islets and to the hypothalamus.

With the indirect immunofluorescence technique somatostatin, a recently isolated and structurally characterized hypothalamic tetradecapeptide, which inhibits growth hormone release, has been traced in different tissues of the rat. Somatostatin or somatostatin-like immunoreactivity (SLI) was present in both neurons and endocrine-like cells. Somatostatin positive nerve cell bodies were observed in the periventricular region in the anterior parts of the hypothalamus and in probable nerve endings in the external and internal layer of the median eminence and in the pituitary stalk and in the ventro

Prenatal-lactational alcohol exposure induces sex-specific CX3CL1/CX3CR1 dysregulation linked to neuroendocrine imbalance and cardiovascular risk.

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder is associated with lasting neurodevelopmental and cardiovascular dysfunctions. The fractalkine axis CX3CL1/CX3CR1, a chemokine and its sole known receptor expressed in microglia and myeloid/endothelial cells, coordinates neuroimmune and vascular responses. We tested whether prenatal-lactational alcohol exposure (PLAE) is associated with sex-specific dysregulation of this axis along with integrated behavioral, neuroendocrine, inflammatory, and cardiovascular signatures. Pregnant C57BL/6 dams consumed 20% ethanol using a drinking-in-the-dark (DID) paradigm through

Persistent Tachypnea of Infancy. Usual and Aberrant.

RATIONALE: Persistent tachypnea of infancy (PTI) is a specific clinical entity of undefined etiology comprising the two diseases neuroendocrine cell hyperplasia of infancy (NEHI) and pulmonary interstitial glycogenosis. The outcome of typical NEHI is favorable. The outcome may be different for patients without a typical NEHI presentation, and thus a lung biopsy to differentiate the diseases is indicated. OBJECTIVES: To determine whether infants with the characteristic clinical presentation and computed tomographic (CT) imaging of NEHI (referred to as "usual PTI") have long-term outcome and bi

Sex-specific neuroendocrine and behavioral phenotypes in hypomorphic Type II Neuregulin 1 rats.

Neuregulin 1 (NRG1) is an important growth factor involved in the development and plasticity of the central nervous system. Since its identification as a susceptibility gene for schizophrenia, several transgenic mouse models have been employed to elucidate the role NRG1 may play in the pathogenesis of psychiatric disease. Unfortunately very few studies have included females, despite the fact that some work suggests that the consequences of disrupted NRG1 expression may be sex-specific. Here, we used Nrg1 hypomorphic (Nrg1(Tn)) Fischer rats to demonstrate sex-specific changes in neuroendocrine

Neuroendocrine cells in pancreatic duct adenocarcinoma: an immunohistochemical study.

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinomas can display disseminated neuroendocrine (NE) cells. Controversies exist as to their relative incidence, histogenesis, hormone production, and the prognostic implications of their presence. These issues were elucidated by means of a broad immunohistochemical (IHC) investigation of the resected specimens from 47 patients. Chromogranin A (CgA) was chosen as the major NE marker. In addition, the sensitivity of the conventional IHC procedure was increased by means of the TSA (Tyramide Signal Amplification) technique. In tumours with CgA immunoreactive (IR) cells, d

Neuropeptide FF (NPFF) control of magnocellular neurosecretory cells of the rat hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus (PVN).

Neuropeptide FF (NPFF) is an octapeptide belonging to an extended family of RF amide peptides that have been implicated in a wide variety of physiological functions in the brain. NPFF and its receptors are abundantly expressed in the rat brain and spinal cord including the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus (PVN), an autonomic nucleus critical for the secretion of neurohormones and the regulation of sympathetic outflow. In this study, we sought to examine the effects of NPFF on GABAergic inhibitory synaptic input to magnocellular neurosecretory cells (MNCs) of the PVN, which secrete the neur

Effects of long-term treatment with resveratrol and subcutaneous and oral estradiol administration on the pituitary-thyroid-axis.

The lack of estrogen during menopause is associated with various symptoms including osteoporosis, cardiovascular diseases, and menopausal symptoms. For many years, conventional hormone replacement therapy has been successfully used to treat these conditions. However, in light of recent studies that draw attention to potential hazards of conventional HRT, various attempts were undertaken to search for alternatives of classical HRT. Phytoestrogens are supposed to ameliorate various discomforts associated with menopause. Resveratrol (RES) is present in red wine, grapes and peanuts and has been im

Immunomodulatory effects of IL-12 in relation to the pineal endocrine function in metastatic cancer patients.

In addition to IL-2, IL-12 would constitute one of the most promising cytokines in the treatment of human neoplasms. IL-2 has been proven to induce in vitro and in vivo several evident changes in the secretion of cytokines and various other immunoinflammatory substances. In contrast, very little data are available about the immune effects of IL-12 in humans. The present study was carried out to investigate the in vivo immunoinflammatory effects of IL-12 by analyzing the secretions of neopterin, soluble IL-2 receptor (SIL-2R), tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF), IL-2 and IL-6 in relation to the
