Interdisciplinary management of a patient with skeletal anteroposterior discrepancy, impacted canine, and missing teeth.

For patients with complex dentofacial problems, orthodontic treatment is often not enough to obtain optimal esthetic and functional results. This case report demonstrates the treatment of a patient with skeletal anteroposterior discrepancy through an interdisciplinary approach and emphasizes the importance of collaboration with other dental disciplines to achieve the desired esthetic results.

Rib Bone Graft Adjusted to Fit the Facial Asymmetry: A Frame Structure Graft.

The authors introduce the concept of a "frame structure graft" in which a harvested rib bone was adjusted to fit facial asymmetry. On the costochondral junction of the sixth or seventh rib, a 5 cm incision was made. Through a subperiosteal dissection, the rib bone was harvested. Using a reciprocating saw, the harvested rib was scored on its anterior surface as well as its posterior surface with a partial depth at different intervals. The harvested rib bone was placed on the skin surface of the unaffected side of the face and a curvature was created exactly matching that of the unaffected side

3D vector analysis of mandibular condyle stability in mandibular setback surgery with bicortical bioabsorbable screw fixation.

INTRODUCTION: Bioabsorbable screws became widely used for stable fixation in orthognathic surgery as biomechanical technology advanced. Recently, 3D image analyses begin to be used to evaluate surgical changes. The purpose of this study was to evaluate, using 3D vector analysis, the stability of bicortical bioabsorbable screw fixation in mandibular setback using a sagittal split ramus osteotomy. Spatial change of the mandibular condyle was determined by 3D coordinates containing directional information. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Bicortical screw fixation was performed using either a bioabsorbabl

A new look at osteogenesis imperfecta. A clinical, radiological and biochemical study of forty-two patients.

In a clinical, radiological and biochemical study of forty-two patients from Oxford with osteogenesis imperfecta, it was found that patients could be divided simply into mild, moderate and severe groups according to deformity of long bones. In the severe group (seventeen patients) a family history of affected members was uncommon and fractures began earlier and were more frequent than in the mild group (twenty-two patients); sixteen patients in the severe group had scoliosis and eleven had white sclerae; no patients in the mild group had white sclerae or scoliosis. Radiological examination of

Camouflage treatment of skeletal class III malocclusion with asymmetry using a bone-borne rapid maxillary expander.

This case report presents the successful use of palatal mini-implants for rapid maxillary expansion and mandibular distalization in a skeletal Class III malocclusion. The patient was a 13-year-old girl with the chief complaint of facial asymmetry and a protruded chin. Camouflage orthodontic treatment was chosen, acknowledging the possibility of need for orthognathic surgery after completion of her growth. A bone-borne rapid expander (BBRME) was used to correct the transverse discrepancy and was then used as indirect anchorage for distalization of the lower dentition with Class III elastics. As

Virtual model surgery and wafer fabrication for orthognathic surgery.

Model surgery is one of the most important steps in the preoperative workup for orthognathic surgery. In cases of complicated two-jaw surgery, manual model surgery requires many laboratory based steps that are time-consuming and may contain potential errors. Recently, a three-dimensional virtual model surgery (3D-VMS) program (3Txer version 2, Orapix, Seoul, Korea) was introduced. The purpose of this article is to present a 3D-VMS case using combined data from 3D computed tomography and 3D virtual dental casts.

Complications associated with maxillary osteotomies.

There are certain complications involved in maxillary ostetomies; devitalization of teeth, loss of part or all of the osteotomized segment, and relapse are possible problems. The paramount cause of the complications in seven different cases seemed to be the interruption of the blood supply to the operative site. A seven-point guideline is formulated; it integrates preoperative planning, surgical procqedures, and postoperative care.

A comparison of current prediction imaging programs.

To investigate perceived differences in the ability of current software to simulate the actual outcome of orthognathic surgery, we chose 10 difficult test cases with vertical discrepancies and "retreated" them using the actual surgical changes. Five programs--Dentofacial Planner Plus, Dolphin Imaging, Orthoplan, Quick Ceph Image, and Vistadent--were evaluated, by using both the default result and a refined result created with each program's enhancement tools. Three panels (orthodontists, oral-maxillofacial surgeons, and laypersons) judged the default images and the retouched simulations by ran
