Autoradiograms were prepared from midbrains and hindbrains of male and female Siberian hamsters (Phodopus sungorus), kept under short-day or long-day illumination, after injection of tritium-labeled 1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol (vitamin D, soltriol). Concentration and retention of radioactivity was noted in nuclei of certain neurons, glial cells, and ependymal cells, and in choroid epithelium. Labeled neurons of varying intensity were found throughout the brainstem in distinct populations at characteristic topographical sites, which include cranial nerve motor nuclei, the nucleus (n.) reticul

The coordination of secretory and motor responses to food within the alimentary canal requires well organized brain stem reflex systems. In the goldfish, Carassius auratus, three vagal reflex systems control three phases of ingestion and digestion. The orobranchial system sorts food from substrate, the pharyngeal chewing organ prepares items deemed to be food for digestion and absorption, and the abdominal system regulates the digestion of food. Each system is represented in the central nervous system by separate sensory and motor nuclei. The aim of the present study was to determine whether t

5 patients with cerebral anoxia of various etiology had postanoxic coma with the syndrome of periodic synchronous and sterotyped myoclonus first mentioned by Lance and Adams. These authors observed action myoclonus as a sequel to this syndrome which is rarely survived. Most reports have dealt mainly with its bad prognostic significance. Although the localization of action myoclonus has much been discussed, and is still controversial, little attention has been paid to the possible localizing significance of its acute precursor syndrome. Most patients with this type of myoclonus (all in our seri

Studies concerning the effects of cholinergic stimulants and blockers on habituation, alternation, classical and instrumental conditioning, differentiation, and discrimination are summarized and discussed. This analysis suggests that many results originally ascribed to associative changes can be more economically accounted for by nonassociative factors inherent in the experiments. Furthermore, the data show that neither one of the more economical nonassuciative explanations at either the sensory, the drive, or the response level can by itself account for the complex interactions observed. The

The third cerebral ventricle of cats treated with nialamide and anaesthetized with chloralose was perfused, and the effluent was tested for 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) and also for acetylcholine (ACh) when the perfusion fluid contained neostigmine.2. Under ;resting' conditions a 25 min sample of effluent contained from < 1 to 6 ng 5-HT; the release remained steady during many hours of perfusion. It was necessary to watch out for traces of blood which might contribute to the 5-HT content and which were only visible after centrifugation.3. A number of regions in the ventral mid-brain and hind-

The reticulum plays an important part in the regeneration of lymph nodes autoplastically transplanted into the abdominal wall of the albino rat. The necrosis which follows transplantation involves mainly the lymphocytes. A margin of lymphocytes is preserved only at the periphery. This may be due to early lymphatic connection with the marginal sinus of the node. The reticulum cells are apparently more resistant since for the most part they do not degenerate. There are three possible origins of the lymphocytes of the regenerated node. They may arise by proliferation of lymphocytes retained at th

This paper describes a novel double transgenic-based platform developed by crossing a murine model of Alzheimer's disease (AD), 5xFAD mice with RosatdTomato (tdT) reporter mice, to track degeneration of specific populations of neurons. 5xFAD+/-/RosatdT mice received intra-spinal cord injections of AAV-retrograde (rg)/Cre at 2-4 months of age to retrogradely transduce and induce tdT expression by corticospinal neurons (CSNs) in layer V of the sensorimotor cortex as well as neurons in the red nucleus and reticular formation that project to the spinal cord. Brains and spinal cords were collected

Stressful social experiences play an important role in increasing vulnerability to substance use, including cocaine. Oxytocin (OXT), known for its anxiolytic properties and involvement in social functioning, has been suggested as a potential therapeutic for cocaine use disorder (CUD). However, limited research has explored OXT's influence on social stress in CUD, and no study has examined its effects on neural response to subconscious (implicit) social threat cues in this population. To address this gap, the present study administered intranasal OXT (24 IU) or placebo (PBO) to participants wit

Myeloid differentiation factor 2 (MD2) is a co-receptor of a classical proinflammatory protein TLR4 whose activation leads to neuroinflammation. It is widely accepted that TLR4 is expressed on the cell surface of microglia and astrocytes, and MD2 is expected to be expressed by these cells as well. However, our previous study showed that neurons from certain nuclei also expressed MD2. Whether MD2 is expressed by other brain nuclei is still unknown. It is the aim of the present study to map the distribution of MD2-positive cells in the adult mouse brain. Immunohistochemical staining against MD2

INTRODUCTION: CD4+ T cells are thought to have a central role in the pathogenesis of autoimmune hepatitis (AIH). Mucosal addressin cell adhesion molecule-1 (MAdCAM-1) directs homing of CD4+ T cells in the alimentary tract and is a therapeutic target in inflammatory bowel diseases. Here we assessed MAdCAM-1 expression in AIH and viral hepatitis and related its expression with immune infiltrate analysis and histopathological key features.
METHODS: Hepatic portal areas of pretreatment biopsies (n=10) and follow-up biopsies (n=9) of patients with a confirmed diagnosis of AIH were assessed for MAd

Zinc imidazole framework-8, abbreviated as ZIF-8, is a member of the metal organic framework (MOF) family. The chemical architecture of ZIF-8 consists of zinc metal duly coordinated with an organic ligand/fragment, resulting in a cagelike three-dimensional network with unique porosity. Because of such a unique architecture and physicochemical property, ZIF-8 has recently been explored in various applications such as gas storage, catalysis, electrochemical sensing, drug delivery, etc. Electrochemical sensors are currently a hot topic in scientific advances, where small, portable, Internet of Th

BACKGROUND: Spike-wave discharges, underlying absence seizures, are generated within a cortico-thalamo-cortical network that involves the somatosensory cortex, the reticular thalamic nucleus, and the ventrobasal thalamic nuclei. Activation of T-type voltage-sensitive calcium channels (VSCCs) contributes to the pathological oscillatory activity of this network, and some of the first-line drugs used in the treatment of absence epilepsy inhibit T-type calcium channels. The α2δ subunit is a component of high voltage-activated VSCCs (i.e., L-, N-, P/Q-, and R channels) and studies carried out in he

Several studies have reported on certain aspects of the characteristics of different sites within a keloid lesion, but detailed studies on the keloid dermis at different depths within a keloid lesion are scarce. The aim of this study was to investigate the histology of the keloid dermis at different depths. This study included 19 keloid tissue samples that were collected from 19 patients and 19 normal skin samples, which were harvested from subjects without keloids or hypertrophic scar. Samples were studied by light microscopy using routine hematoxylin and eosin histochemical staining, and imm

OBJECTIVES: Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS) is a severe epilepsy of childhood onset associated with intellectual disability and multiple seizure types. Characteristic interictal electrographic discharges include generalized paroxysmal fast activity and slow spike and wave, which we have previously shown recruit widespread areas of association cortex. We wished to determine whether patients with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS) have changes in cerebral volumes that match this pattern of cortical recruitment.
METHODS: High resolution T1 weighted structural MRI was collected from 10 patients with LGS

Patients with neurological gait disorders often present to their doctor with the key symptoms of dizziness and gait unsteadiness (e.g. cerebellar ataxia, progressive supranuclear palsy). In vestibular syndromes, on the other hand, the gait disturbance is a leading sign and many aspects of the syndrome can be recognized from the analysis of posture and gait (e.g. direction of falls). For therapy in particular it is important to better understand the physiological control of posture and gait to adapt rehabilitation programs. We recently succeeded in visualizing the hierarchic network for postura

Nitric oxide is a gaseous neurotransmitter that is synthesized by the enzyme nitric oxide synthase I (NOS I). At present, little is known of NOS I-positive neurons in the vestibular nuclear complex of the cat (VNCc). The aim of the present study was to examine the morphology, distribution patterns and interconnections of NOS I-positive neurons, including fibres in the VNCc. Five adult cats were used as experimental animals. All cats were anaesthetized and perfused transcardially. Brains were removed, postfixed, cut on a freezing microtome and stained in three different ways. Every third sectio

The fluorescent carbocyanine dye 1,1'-dioctadecyl 3,3,3',3'-tetramethylindocarbocyanine perchlorate (DiI) was used in fixed tissue to comprehensively analyze the connections of the olfactory bulbs and the different regions of the ventral (V) area of the telencephalic lobes (subpallium) of the rainbow trout. With this goal, DiI was applied to the different telencephalic nuclei and zones, as well as to the olfactory nerve, the olfactory bulb, the retina, and to several structures in the diencephalon and brainstem of juvenile trout. The olfactory bulbs maintain reciprocal connections with several

The nucleus of the solitary tract (nTS) is a major site of brainstem control of vital functions (e.g., cardiovascular reflexes and respiration). We examined anatomic relationships of the human nucleus of the solitary tract, using a bidirectional lipophilic fluorescent tracer 1-1'-dioctadecyl-3,3,3',3'-tetramethylindocarbocyanine perchlorate (DiI) in 10 postmortem human fetal midgestational medullae oblongatae. Labeling by diffusion of DiI from the nucleus of the solitary tract included: (1) neuropil of all future subdivisions of the nucleus of the solitary tract ipsilateral to the DiI crystal;

BACKGROUND: We previously studied the occurrence of muscle tone reduction (MTR), sawtooth waves (STW), and REM in sleep, and found a stereotypical sequence of these events in normal subjects. Patients with the postpolio syndrome may have involvement of the reticular formation in the brainstem, an area known to mediate initiation of REM sleep. We hypothesized that such brainstem pathology might affect the stereotyped sequence of events initiating REM sleep.
METHODS: We measured the latencies to the onsets of the first MTR, the first STW, and the first REM in 13 patients with postpolio syndrome
