Victims of chemical terrorism, a family of four who were exposed to sulfur mustard.

Sulfur mustard (SM) was responsible for more than 80% of all documented chemical casualties during the Great War. Recent literature on clinic picture of SM exposure remained so limited with the sporadic cases who were accidentally exposed to SM especially either in Western Europe or China. We reported a Syrian family of four who became victims of chemical terrorism due to SM exposure and we described the detailed clinical course of the family including the medical history, initial symptomatology, clinical examination, hematological data, and initial treatment in the first 48 hours after exposu

The incidence, timing, and predisposing factors of germinal matrix and intraventricular hemorrhage (GMH/IVH) in preterm neonates.

BACKGROUND: Germinal matrix and intraventricular hemorrhage (GMH/IVH) is a known complication occurring in the first week of life in preterm neonates. However, the precise time of its occurrence and the ideal time to perform diagnostic imaging studies remain controversial. The purpose of this paper is to address these two issues in our patient population to allocate our resources to those at highest risk. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study included 282 premature newborns (under 37 weeks of gestation) that were admitted to our neonate ICU in a year's time and screened for GMH/IVH. They were gro

Substantial spontaneous long-term improvement in subacute sclerosing panencephalitis. Six cases from the Middle East and a review of the literature.

Of 118 cases of subacute sclerosing panencephalitis identified in an extensive follow-up study in the Middle East, six patients were found by personal interview to have experienced substantial spontaneous long-term improvement. To our knowledge, this rate of 5% for such improvement is presently the most accurate estimate available. Relative to the onset of clinical illness, the conditions of two patients are still improving four to five years later, two are stable four to six years later, one relapsed and died recently after eight years, and one is currently in relapse after 11 years. The cond

Physical activity, post-traumatic stress disorder, and exposure to torture among asylum seekers in Sweden: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Forced migrant populations have high rates of trauma-related ill health, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Physical activity (PA) is well-established as an effective stress reliever, while insufficient PA is associated with adverse effects on both mental and physical health. The aim of this study was to examine the prevalence of different levels of PA and its association with PTSD symptom severity, controlled for exposure to torture, among asylum seekers in Sweden. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey study, with data from 455 asylum seekers, originating from Afghanist

Modeling the distribution of the West Nile and Rift Valley Fever vector Culex pipiens in arid and semi-arid regions of the Middle East and North Africa.

BACKGROUND: The Middle East North Africa (MENA) region is under continuous threat of the re-emergence of West Nile virus (WNV) and Rift Valley Fever virus (RVF), two pathogens transmitted by the vector species Culex pipiens. Predicting areas at high risk for disease transmission requires an accurate model of vector distribution, however, most Cx. pipiens distribution modeling has been confined to temperate, forested habitats. Modeling species distributions across a heterogeneous landscape structure requires a flexible modeling method to capture variation in mosquito response to predictors as w

Description of trauma among French service members in the Department of Defense Trauma Registry: understanding the nature of trauma and the care provided.

BACKGROUND: Since 2001, the French Armed Forces have sustained many casualties during the Global War on Terror; however, even today, there is no French Military trauma registry. Some French service members (SMs) were treated in US Military Medical Treatment Facilities (MTFs) and were recorded in the US Department of Defense Trauma Registry (DoDTR). Our objective was to conduct a descriptive analysis of the injuries sustained by French SMs reported in the DoDTR and subsequent care provided to them to assist in understanding the importance of building a French Military trauma registry. METHODS:

Measurement tools for sedentary behavior in the Arabic-speaking countries in MENA region: a systematic review of validated instruments from the BRIDGE project.

BACKGROUND: Sedentary behavior is an independent risk factor for adverse health outcomes. Screen time represents a specific domain of sedentary behavior and is often used as a proxy. Accurate measurement of these behaviors is essential for surveillance, research, and intervention. However, the availability, characteristics, and psychometric quality of validated instruments used to assess these behaviors in Arabic-speaking countries in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region have not been well documented. This systematic review aimed to identify, describe, and critically appraise the ins

Vaccine-preventable diseases in migrants in Europe: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Migrants in Europe often face barriers to vaccination, increasing their vulnerability to vaccine-preventable diseases (VPDs). Despite policies promoting catch-up immunisation on arrival, data on VPD burden and outcomes among migrants remain limited. This systematic review synthesises evidence on the prevalence, incidence, mortality, and outcomes of VPDs in migrants across EU/EEA countries, UK, and Switzerland. METHODS: We searched Medline, Embase, Global Health, and grey literature sources (including websites of national public health organisations and agencies) for primary studie

Rapid mental health screening in conflict zones: a translation and cross-cultural adaptation into Arabic of the shortened Revised Child Anxiety and Depression Scale (RCADS-25).

BACKGROUND: During conflict, children and adolescents are at increased risk of mental health problems and in particular, anxiety and depression. However, mental health screening in conflict settings is problematic and carries risk making the need for fast, easy-to-administer, screening instruments paramount. The shortened version of the Revised Child Anxiety and Depression Scale (RCADS-25) is one method of rapidly assessing anxiety and depressive symptoms in youths. This self-report questionnaire demonstrates good internal consistency and diagnostic capacity in clinical and non-clinical popula

Comparison of some quality properties of soils around land-mined areas and adjacent agricultural fields.

When agricultural lands are no longer used for agriculture and allowed to recover its natural vegetation, soil organic carbon can accumulate in the soil. Measurements of soil organic carbon and aggregate stability changes under various forms of land use are needed for the development of sustainable systems. Therefore, comparison of soil samples taken from both agricultural and nearby area close to land-mined fields where no agricultural practices have been done since 1956 can be a good approach to evaluate the effects of tillage and agriculture on soil quality. The objective of this study was
