Autobiographical memory loss in Alzheimer's disease: The role of the reminiscence bump.

Research on autobiographical memory loss in Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by conflicting findings concerning a possible sparing of older memories. The literature shows evidence for both a negative temporal gradient, a flat gradient and a reminiscence bump - that is, a disproportionally high frequency of memories from early adulthood relative to surrounding periods. Here, we expanded the number of lifetime periods of the Autobiographical Memory Interview (AMI; Kopelman, Wilson & Baddeley, 1989, 1990) from the standard three to seven in order to increase the sensitivity of the test t

Temporal Aneurysmorrhaphy Technique for the Management of Complex Middle Cerebral Artery Aneurysm: A Video Case.

A 57-year-old man who had previously suffered a transient episode of retrograde amnesia was admitted to the vascular department of the Burdenko Neurosurgical Center. Computed tomography angiography revealed a complex trifurcation aneurysm of the right middle cerebral artery (MCA) bifurcation. There were no clear focal symptoms after the neurologic examination. The patient underwent a right-sided craniotomy to approach the Sylvian fissure and MCA branches. The MCA aneurysm with 2 lobes had been exposed. One of the M2 branches densely adhered to the aneurysm dome. Attempts of the M2 separation a

Self-reported developmental changes in the frequency and characteristics of somnambulistic and sleep terror episodes in chronic sleepwalkers.

BACKGROUND: Far from being benign, somnambulistic episodes can be frequent and/or severe and potentially injurious. Episodes may also be accompanied by sleep mentation with variable degrees of retrograde amnesia. The present study investigated how somnambulistic episodes unfold from childhood through adulthood, a topic that remains understudied. METHODS: Adult sleepwalkers with a diagnosis of primary somnambulism and a childhood onset of the disorder (n = 113) were assessed for changes in frequency of their episodes, recall of episode-related sleep mentation and aggressive episodes during chi

Computed tomography of the head for adult patients with minor head injury: are clinical decision rules a necessary evil?

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to evaluate compliance with and performance of the Canadian Computed Tomography Head Rule (CCHR), and its applicability to the Singapore adult population with minor head injury. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study over six months of consecutive patients who presented to the adult emergency department (ED) with minor head injury. Data on predictor variables indicated in the CCHR was collected and compliance with the CCHR was assessed by comparing the recommendations for head computed tomography (CT) to its actual usage. RESULTS: In total, 349 patients sa

Shell shock: Psychogenic gait and other movement disorders-A film review.

BACKGROUND: The psychological pressure on soldiers during World War I (WWI) and other military conflicts has resulted in many reported cases of psychogenic gait as well as other movement disorders. In this paper, psychogenic movement disorders captured in the WWI film footage "War Neuroses" is reanalyzed. METHODS: Two movement disorders specialists re-examined film images of 21 WWI patients with various and presumed psychogenic manifestations, pre- and post treatment. The film was recorded by Arthur Hurst, a general physician with an interest in neurology. RESULTS: All 21 subjects were males

A patient with multiple synchronous gliomas of distinctly different grades and correlative radiographic findings.

BACKGROUND: Multiple gliomas represent approximately 2 to 5% of all high-grade gliomas which are categorized as multifocal or multicentric depending on the timing, location and pattern of spread. We present a patient with bi-hemispheric, noncontiguous, low- and high-grade gliomas proven by biopsy. She underwent surgical excision and radiotherapy, but unfortunately succumbed to her disease shortly thereafter. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 64-year-old female presented to the hospital with confusion, disorientation and retrograde amnesia after an unwitnessed fall. There were no symptoms of headaches or vi

Neglect of memory after dopaminergic lesions in monkeys.

Crossed unilateral dopaminergic lesions of the nigrostriatal bundle and unilateral inferotemporal cortex ablations (DA x IT lesions) in marmoset monkeys produced impaired retention of object discriminations first learnt before, or after, the DA lesion but no impairment on new learning of the same type of task. Retention testing of a pre-operatively learned task was given after new learning of a different task so impairment cannot be attributed to improvement with practice or spontaneous recovery. We argue that the DA lesion produces a form of intentional neglect, a defect of volition, which is

AMPA/kainate and group-I metabotropic receptor antagonists infused into different brain areas impair memory formation of inhibitory avoidance in rats.

Several lines of evidence suggest that glutamate receptors are involved in memory processing. To examine the role of non-N-methyl-D-aspartate (non-NMDA) glutamate receptors on memory consolidation, rats were bilaterally implanted with cannulae aimed at the CA1 region of the dorsal hippocampus (CA1), entorhinal cortex (ENTO), posterior parietal cortex (PPC) or the basolateral nucleus of the amygdala (BLA), and trained in a one-trial step-down inhibitory avoidance task. At different times after training, the alpha-amino 3-hydroxy-5 methyl 4-isoxazole propionate (AMPA) receptor blocker, 6-cyano-7

Stimulators of the cAMP cascade reverse amnesia induced by intra-amygdala but not intrahippocampal KN-62 administration.

Infusion of the calcium-calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II (CaMKII) inhibitor KN-62 (3.5 ng/side) 0 h after training into rat hippocampus CA1 or amygdala has been known for years to cause retrograde amnesia for step-down inhibitory avoidance. On the other hand, drugs that indirectly stimulate protein kinase A (PKA) (8-Br-cAMP, 1.25 microg/side; norepinephrine, 0.3 microg/side; the dopamine D1 receptor agonist, SKF38393, 7.5 microg/side) infused 3 h posttraining into CA1 but not amygdala markedly facilitate retention of this task. Chronic ethanol consumption impairs spatial remote memory in rats but does not affect cortical cholinergic parameters.

We have studied learning, memory and cortical cholinergic parameters after oral administration of 20% v/v ethanol solution to male Fisher rats for 6 months. A group of rats were trained to behave efficiently in an eight-arm radial maze and after that split into two subgroups submitted to ethanol or control treatment. Ethanol-treated rats had more difficulty in relearning the same task 1 year later, compared to ethanol-untreated rats (control). Differences in working memory performance were found, but only in the first 10 training sessions. Another group of rats, which had not been pretrained,

Parallel pathways of seizure generalization.

Generalized convulsive status epilepticus is a life-threatening emergency, because recurrent convulsions can cause death or injury. A common form of generalized convulsive status epilepticus is of focal onset. The neuronal circuits activated during seizure spread from the hippocampus, a frequent site of seizure origin, to the bilateral motor cortex, which mediates convulsive seizures, have not been delineated. Status epilepticus was initiated by electrical stimulation of the hippocampus. Neurons transiently activated during seizures were labelled with tdTomato and then imaged following brain s

Neuroimaging and behavioral correlates of recovery from mnestic block syndrome and other cognitive deteriorations.

OBJECTIVE: We conducted a follow-up study on a patient with enduring psychic shock-induced cognitive impairment to study by neuropsychological and functional imaging methods the degree of his recovery process on the brain and cognitive levels. BACKGROUND: Based on the assumption that trauma and stress conditions can alter the functions of the nervous systems, we report on a patient whom we studied 2 and 12 months after he suffered "mnestic block syndrome" and additional cognitive deterioration symptoms. METHODS: We report on a patient studied 2 and 12 months after he suffered "mnestic block

Subjective evaluation of the therapeutic and cognitive effects of electroconvulsive therapy.

BACKGROUND: Methods used to evaluate subjective effects of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) have relied on self-report about discrete aspects of memory. Although objective deficits are demonstrable, patients generally report improved memory after ECT. Patients have not been asked to evaluate the global impact of ECT on mood or memory. This study was undertaken to compare patients' evaluations of ECT outcomes using direct questioning about global impact compared with standard methods. METHODS: A prospective, naturalistic study was conducted in seven hospitals. Patients completed clinical and ne

Drugs acting upon the cyclic adenosine monophosphate/protein kinase A signalling pathway modulate memory consolidation when given late after training into rat hippocampus but not amygdala.

Rats implanted bilaterally with cannulae in the CA1 region of the dorsal hippocampus or in the amygdala were trained in one-trial step-down inhibitory (passive) avoidance using a 0.4 mA footshock. At various times after training (0, 1.5, 3, 6 or 9 h for animals implanted in the hippocampus; 0 or 3 h for those implanted in the amygdala), they received infusions of 8-Br-cAMP (cyclic adenosine monophosphate) (1.25 micrograms/side), SKF38393 (7.5 micrograms/side), SCH23390 (0.5 microgram/side), norepinephrine ClH (0.3 microgram/side), timolol ClH (0.3 microgram/side), 8-HO-DPAT (2.5 micrograms/sid

Hypothermia causes adult-like retention deficits of prior learning in infant mice.

Nine-day-old S-W mice receiving deep body hypothermia or hyperthermia immediately after escape training were retested 1 or 24 hr later. Results indicated that hypothermia impaired 24-hr retention but had no effect upon 1-hr memory. Hyperthermia had no effect, with the mice demonstrating retention of the escape response at both retest intervals. In Experiment 2, administration of hypothermia or hyperthermia 23 hr after original training had no effect upon memory nor did either treatment produce motoric deficits upon retest 1 hr following thermal exposure. Experiment 3 indicated that hypothermia

Profound amnesia after damage to the medial temporal lobe: A neuroanatomical and neuropsychological profile of patient E. P.

E. P. became profoundly amnesic in 1992 after viral encephalitis, which damaged his medial temporal lobe bilaterally. Because of the rarity of such patients, we have performed a detailed neuroanatomical analysis of E. P.'s lesion using magnetic resonance imaging, and we have assessed his cognitive abilities with a wide range of neuropsychological tests. Finally, we have compared and contrasted the findings for E. P. with the noted amnesic patient H.M, whose surgical lesion is strikingly similar to E. P.'s lesion.

Intraventricular extension of an aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage is an independent predictor of a worse functional outcome.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to determine the impact of intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) on the cognitive prognosis of subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) due to ruptured cerebral aneurysm, independent of the presence of intraparenchymal hemorrhage, hydrocephalus or vasospasm. PATIENT AND METHODS: A Retrospective review of a prospectively collected database of patients with aneurysmal SAH from July 2009 to November 2016 was performed. Patients were included if they had a saccular aneurysm with a Hunt-Hess grade (HHG) 1-3. Those who underwent craniectomy/clipping and those with vasospa

Neuropsychological and neuroanatomical correlates of confabulation.

In the present exploratory investigation we report nine confabulatory patients of comparable age, education, and general level of intelligence in the acute epoch of recovery after rupture and clipping of ACoA aneurysms. Five of the nine cases had "spontaneous" confabulation, severe anterograde amnesia, markedly poor attentional and executive functions, and denial of illness. These patients all had multiple lesions that involved basal forebrain, ventral frontal lobe, and striatum. The other four patients manifested only "momentary" or "provoked" confabulations. These patients also had severe an

[Experience with the use of posterior pituitary hormones in memory disorders of different etiology].

Results of using vasopressin and pituitrin in 20 patients with memory disturbances of various genesis (due to circulatory disturbances in the vertebrobasilar system, cerebral atherosclerosis, neurasthenia, brain concussion, epilepsy) are reviewed. The therapeutic efficacy of the hormones was evaluated with the use of a complex of psychophysiological methods. Objective changes in the patients' neurological status and subjective state were taken into account. A high therapeutic efficacy of the hormones in the treatment of amnestic syndromes is demonstrated.
