Impairment of mitochondrial integrity and redox status in brain regions during a low-dose long-term exposition of rats to pyrethrinoïds: the preventive effect of quercetin.

Pyrethrinoïds are synthetic pesticides widely used in agriculture and farms to protect crops from weeds, insects, fungi, and molds. Increased and uncontrolled use of these pollutants can have harmful effects on human health via consumption of contaminated food products. In the present study, deltamethrin (DLT = 3.72 mg/kg) and Bifenthrin (BF = 2.6 mg/kg) were used during a long-term exposition in the rats to assess their effect on mitochondrial integrity and function in different brain areas (hippocampus, striatum, cortex, and cerebellum). The results of this study have shown that chronic trea

Multi-year evaluation and release of improved soybean lines for resistance to Phomopsis seed decay.

Soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] is one of the most economically important oilseed crops grown in the world. Soybean diseases not only affect yield but can also affect seed quality resulting in significant economic losses. Phomopsis seed decay (PSD) causes poor seed quality and is one of the most damaging soybean seed diseases. Diaporthe longicolla (syn. Phomopsis longicolla) and other pathogens in the Diaporthe/Phomopsis complex are the cause of PSD. Developing and releasing PSD-resistant germplasm lines is an important step toward the development of resistant cultivars that can protect soybe

Mycoestrogen Exposure during Pregnancy: Impact of the ABCG2 Q141K Variant on Birth and Placental Outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Zearalenone (ZEN) is an estrogenic mycotoxin ("mycoestrogen") that contaminates global grain crops leading to detectable concentrations of ZEN and its metabolites, including the synthetic version α-zearalanol (also called zeranol; ZER), in human populations. Despite in vitro and in vivo animal evidence of endocrine disruption by ZEN, there has been limited investigation in humans. OBJECTIVES: To examine markers of fetal growth following prenatal exposure to ZEN and evaluate the role of the placental efflux transporter BCRP/ABCG2 in protecting against ZEN's potential fetoplacental

Oregano essential oil vapour prevents Plasmopara viticola infection in grapevine (Vitis Vinifera) and primes plant immunity mechanisms.

The reduction of synthetic fungicides in agriculture is necessary to guarantee a sustainable production that protects the environment and consumers' health. Downy mildew caused by the oomycete Plasmopara viticola is the major pathogen in viticulture worldwide and responsible for up to 60% of pesticide treatments. Alternatives to reduce fungicides are thus utterly needed to ensure sustainable vineyard-ecosystems, consumer health and public acceptance. Essential oils (EOs) are amongst the most promising natural plant protection alternatives and have shown their antibacterial, antiviral and antif

Effects of atmospheric ammonia (NH3) on terrestrial vegetation: a review.

At the global scale, among all N (nitrogen) species in the atmosphere and their deposition on to terrestrial vegetation and other receptors, NH3 (ammonia) is considered to be the foremost. The major sources for atmospheric NH3 are agricultural activities and animal feedlot operations, followed by biomass burning (including forest fires) and to a lesser extent fossil fuel combustion. Close to its sources, acute exposures to NH3 can result in visible foliar injury on vegetation. NH3 is deposited rapidly within the first 4-5 km from its source. However, NH3 is also converted in the atmosphere to

Novel Design of Citral-Thiourea Derivatives for Enhancing Antifungal Potential against Colletotrichum gloeosporioides.

Although much progress has been made in developing botanical fungicides to combat fungal diseases in crops, there remains a great need to improve the efficiency and long-term safety of these fungicides. This study proposes a novel strategy for designing citral-thiourea derivatives that feature such desirable properties. The motivation of the work herein was to enhance the antifungal activity of citral against C. gloeosprioides by exploiting the synergistic effect that arises from combining citral and thiourea compounds, thereby producing citral-thiourea derivatives that exhibit good long-term

Time-course transcriptome and WGCNA reveal tissue-specific genes in 'White BK-1' rye during early cold acclimation stage.

INTRODUCTION: The early stage of cold acclimation (CA) is a critical period during which plants gradually transition from cold sensing to the establishment of acquired freezing tolerance. Winter rye (Secale cereale L.) is a cereal crop with superior cold hardiness. However, the temporal transcriptional dynamics during early CA and the tissue-specific expression patterns between leaves and roots remain poorly understood. METHODS: We evaluated the growth and freezing survival of 'White BK-1' during long-term CA and profiled leaf and root transcriptomes at multiple time points during the first 4

Cannabis: from crop to shop-some insights about stability to access quality control.

BACKGROUND: Cannabis sativa L. is increasingly used for medicinal and commercial purposes, yet most reviews treat chemical composition, ecology, and post-harvest processing as separate topics. This manuscript advances a conceptual framework that links chemical stability, chemodiversity, and post-harvest quality across the production chain (“crop to shop”), emphasizing and detailing how environmental and technological drivers shape cannabinoid and terpenoid profiles and, ultimately, product standardization. METHODS: We conducted a structured scoping review with bibliometric mapping of studies o

From Redaction to Restoration: Deep Learning for Medical Image Deidentification and Reconstruction.

Removing patient-identifying information from medical images is a prerequisite for sharing image data directly, as in public dataset release and open benchmarks, where the images themselves, rather than only model updates must leave the originating institution. However, many methods currently used for de-identification, e.g., cropping or blacking out image regions to eliminate burned-in text, can have negative effects on downstream image analysis tasks because of removal of relevant but non-identifiable information. This work presents an end-to-end deep learning framework for transforming raw

Simulated acid rain (SAR) induced alterations in plant morpho-physiology, leaf ultrastructure, cell viability, and yield - A case study on Mentha arvensis L. (Wild mint).

Acid rain (AR), a secondary pollutant, a product of sulfur and nitrogen oxides fusion with the atmosphere's water vapor, comes on earth in the form of rain, poses a significant environmental threat, and affects soil characteristics and plant morphology, ultrastructure, physiology, and yield. However, its effects on aromatic and medicinal plants remain insufficiently studied. Due to their low side effects and high efficacy, the use of herbal plants for disease remedy preparation is found globally and their consumption increases year after year. Mentha arvensis is such an aromatic crop, having g

In vivo Antiphytoviral Activity of Essential Oils and Hydrosols From Origanum vulgare, Thymus vulgaris, and Rosmarinus officinalis to Control Zucchini Yellow Mosaic Virus and Tomato Leaf Curl New Delhi Virus in Cucurbita pepo L.

In the last decades, the interest in biological activity of natural compounds has been growing. In plant protection, essential oils have been reported to exhibit antiviral, antimycotic, and antiparasitic activities, and are regarded as promising for the formulation of safe antimicrobial agents. Attention has also been focused on hydrosols, the by-products of hydro-distillation of essential oils. Their production is easy, fast, and cheap, and they seem to arise less concern for human health than essential oils. Plant viruses represent a major concern for agricultural crops since no treatment co

Amendment of biochar and thiourea-modified biochar to mitigate chromium bioavailability and toxicity by modulating oxidative stress system in Vigna radiata in chromium-contaminated agriculture soil.

Chromium (Cr) contamination in agricultural soil poses a significant threat to crop productivity and human health. However, strategies to reduce Cr bioavailability and transfer within the soil-plant system remain limited. The sole application of biochar or Thiourea has been reported to mitigate Cr-induced toxicity in plants. However, the combined application of biochar and thiourea for alleviating Cr toxicity in plants and inhibiting Cr mobility in soil has not yet been reported. Therefore, this study examines the impact of biochar and thiourea biochar amendments on soil fertility and Cr stres

Effects of improved on-farm crop storage on DNA methylation of mothers and their infants: evidence from a randomized controlled trial in Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Stress during pregnancy can lead to adverse maternal and infant health outcomes through epigenetic changes in the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. Among farmers in low-income countries, one important stressor is food insecurity, which can be reduced using hermetic storage bags. This study aimed to determine, for the first time, whether a hermetic storage bag intervention during pregnancy positively affects maternal and infant DNA methylation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis-related genes FKBP5 and NR3C1. We further analyzed whether anthropometrics, stress, and mental
