The danger posed by cadmium (Cd) pollution to rice production is continuously increasing. Co-utilizing milk vetch (Astragalus sinicus L.) and rice straw is a good practice for rice yield and soil fertility in south China. However, its effects on Cd availability in soil-rice systems remain unclear. A micro-plot trial of two typical paddy soils (alluvial sandy soil and reddish clayey soil) in south China was conducted to investigate the effects of milk vetch, rice straw, lime, and their combined application on Cd availability and the related mechanisms. Soil chemical properties, CaCl2-extractabl

Mercury (Hg) is a pollutant of high concern for aquatic systems due to the biomagnification of its methylated form along the food chain. However, in contrast to other metals, gaining knowledge of its bioavailable forms for aquatic microorganisms remains challenging, making Hg risk assessment difficult. Ubiquitous and sessile freshwater biofilms are well known to accumulate and to transform Hg present in their ambient environment. The present study thus aims to evaluate whether non-extractable (proxy of intracellular) Hg accumulated by biofilms could be a good indicator of Hg bioavailability fo

Water samples have been extracted from inside (from standpipes) and from outside (from boreholes) of the trenches at the low level radioactive waste disposal site at Drigg in Cumbria, UK. The samples were taken anaerobically from between 8.5 and 10.0 m below the surface using a submersible pump at low flow rates to ensure that the waters in the standpipes and boreholes were maintained at constant levels. To ensure representative samples, the Eh, pH. conductivity, temperature, iron and dissolved oxygen concentrations of the waters were taken during initial purging and during sampling. The gross

Large quantity of the antiviral drug arbidol is used for resisting virus infection like the Corona Virus Disease 2019 and influenza, resulting in unanticipated environmental pollution. Herein, to investigate the environmental risks of the unanticipated arbidol contamination, a novel in vivo sampling probe was developed based on a bromo-substituted porous organic polymer (Br-POP) and then adopted for tracking the bio-accumulation and bio-transformation of arbidol in living plants by coupling with a nano-electrospray ionization fourier-transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (Nano-ES

Mitigating antibiotics during struvite (MgNH4PO4·6H2O) recovery from swine wastewater is critical to preventing the spread of antibiotic resistance. In this study, unactivated peroxymonosulfate (PMS) and ultraviolet activated peroxymonosulfate (UV/PMS) oxidations were employed to degrade tetracyclines (TCs) during struvite recovery by using synthetic and real wastewaters, respectively. Results demonstrated that UV/PMS possessed higher TCs removal efficiency (93.72 %-96.74 %) in synthetic wastewater than PMS. Unexpectedly, the unactivated PMS process showed higher efficiency (54.58 %-64.92 %) t

In situ chemical oxidation with persulfate anion (S2O82*) is a viable technique for remediation of groundwater contaminants such as trichloroethylene (TCE). An accelerated reaction using S2O82* to destroy TCE can be achieved via chemical activation with ferrous ion to generate sulfate radicals (SO4*)(E degrees =2.6 V). The column study presented here simulates persulfate oxidation of TCE in porous media (glass beads and a sandy soil). Initial experiments were conducted to investigate persulfate transport in the absence of TCE in the column. The persulfate flushing exhibited a longer residence

Urbanization contributes to the formation of novel elemental combinations and signatures in terrestrial and aquatic watersheds, also known as 'chemical cocktails.' The composition of chemical cocktails evolves across space and time due to: (1) elevated concentrations from anthropogenic sources, (2) accelerated weathering and corrosion of the built environment, (3) increased drainage density and intensification of urban water conveyance systems, and (4) enhanced rates of geochemical transformations due to changes in temperature, ionic strength, pH, and redox potentials. Characterizing chemical

Hierakonpolis, Greek for City of the Hawk, nearly 25 km NW of Idfu (Egypt), is an important and extensive archaeological discovery covering a large area. Its richness in archaeological artifacts makes it a valuable site. It has a valid claim to be the first nation state, as indicated by the Palette of Narmer discovered in its main mound. Geological and hydrogeological investigations at the Hierakonpolis Temple Town site documented nearly a 4.0-m water table rise from as early as 1892 to the present. In addition to the rising water levels, the increase of both subsoil water salinity and humidit

Nature-based solutions are encouraged for treating oilfield produced water from oil and gas extraction, a crucial undertaking that aligns with the Canadian oil sands industry's ambitious goal of zero waste, and the globally recognized Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) pertaining to water conservation and ecosystem preservation. This study explored the use of peat-mineral mix (PMM), a leftover of inevitable oil sands mining, for treating low and high-strength wastewaters during biofiltration, which contained large molecular weight (44.3 kDa), which include alcohols, aliphatics, aromatics, an

The integration of ultrasonic (US) cavitation with conventional adsorbents offers a transformative opportunity to upscale wastewater treatment processes. This study evaluates the synergistic effects of US on two distinct activated carbons in granular (GAC) and powder (PAC) forms for the removal of micropollutants (μPs) from both spiked deionized water and secondary effluent. Results demonstrate that within the first minute, US promotes a four-to-six-fold increase in μP removal for GAC, achieving levels equivalent to 30 min of conventional stirred adsorption. This time-parity effect offers the

Cyanobacterial blooms have emerged as a persistent threat to global aquatic ecosystem stability and drinking water safety. Conventional algae removal technologies (e.g., coagulation, photocatalysis) generally face two long-standing bottlenecks: the trade-off between removal efficiency and secondary pollution from cell lysis-triggered microcystin release, and the lack of valorization pathways for hazardous algal residues. In this study, a low-cost iron/potassium hydroxide co-modified bamboo biochar (BC-900-2, prepared via one-step pyrolysis at 900 °C with a Fe/KOH molar ratio of 2:1) was develo

BACKGROUND: Biting midges (Culicoides spp.) are small blood-feeding flies (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) that transmit numerous pathogens that impact animal and human health. The larvae of several Culicoides spp., including vectors, are often found in organically enriched, moist soil habitats. However, the influence of biotic (e.g., cohabiting fauna, potential prey taxa) and abiotic factors (e.g., soil or water properties, time) on abundance and incidence of larval Culicoides in natural habitats is not well understood. This study evaluated the relationships between bacterial and protistan communit

Differences in methylmercury (CH(3)Hg) production normalized to the sulfate reduction rate (SRR) in various species of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) were quantified in pure cultures and in marine sediment slurries in order to determine if SRB strains which differ phylogenetically methylate mercury (Hg) at similar rates. Cultures representing five genera of the SRB (Desulfovibrio desulfuricans, Desulfobulbus propionicus, Desulfococcus multivorans, Desulfobacter sp. strain BG-8, and Desulfobacterium sp. strain BG-33) were grown in a strictly anoxic, minimal medium that received a dose of inorg

Members of Marine Group IV, now termed Hikarchaeia, hold an important transitional evolutionary position among Archaea but remain uncultivated, and their ecology remains uncharacterized. Over a 5-year period, we performed monthly profile sampling in the North Atlantic Subtropical Gyre and sequenced V4 16S rRNA gene amplicons, while also collecting additional size-fractionated and metagenomic samples. Hikarchaeal relative abundance annually peaked at ~1% of prokaryotic amplicons. Their relative abundances were significantly higher after deep winter mixing when thermal stratification isolated ex

INTRODUCTION: Paddy soils represent key biogeochemical interfaces linking arsenic (As) transformation and carbon (C) cycling. Dimethylarsenate (DMAs), a widespread organoarsenic contaminant in rice paddies, can alter methane (CH4) dynamics, but the underlying mechanisms based on dissolved organic matter (DOM)-microbe interaction and the mitigation potential of biochar still remained insufficiently understood.
METHODS: Here, we investigated As biogeochemistry, CH4 emissions, DOM quantity and composition, microbial community assembly and functional gene variations through a 98-day microcosm inc

The presence of Fe(III) in aquatic environments tends to form Fe(III)-dissolved organic matter (DOM) complexes, but their role in enhancement of decontamination and curtailment of disinfection by-products (DBPs) formation remains insufficiently understood. Herein, we systematically elucidated the pivotal role and underlying mechanism of structure-dependent complexation between Fe(III) and DOM in promoting carbamazepine (CBZ) degradation and curtailing DBPs formation in UV/chlorine treatment. The results indicated that Fe(III) readily formed stable complexes with hydroxyl and carboxyl functiona

Microbial sulfate (SO4 2-) reduction in Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) environments can ameliorate the acidity and extreme metal concentrations by consumption of protons via the reduction of SO4 2- to hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and the concomitant precipitation of metals as metal sulfides. The activity of sulfate-reducing bacteria can be stimulated by the amendment of suitable organic carbon sources in these generally oligotrophic environments. Here, we used incubation columns (IC) as model systems to investigate the effect of glycerol amendment on the microbial community composition and its effect on t

Sidestreams in wastewater treatment plants can serve as concentrated sources of nutrients (i.e., nitrogen and phosphorus) to support the growth of photosynthetic organisms that ultimately serve as feedstock for production of fuels and chemicals. However, other chemical characteristics of these streams may inhibit growth in unanticipated ways. Here, we evaluated the use of liquid recovered from municipal anaerobic digesters via gravity belt filtration as a nutrient source for growing the cyanobacterium Synechococcus sp. strain PCC 7002. The gravity belt filtrate (GBF) contained high levels of c
