PURPOSE: There is a paucity of data on child abuse and the eye in West Africa. Therefore, a need exists to determine the causes and circumstances surrounding these occurrences and their effects on the eye and vision in a pediatric population.
METHODS: A 3-year study of consecutive cases of ocular features that presented to an eye clinic following a history suggestive of child abuse along with any associated eye injury was carried out. Socio-demographic characteristics were obtained, as were the presenting and posttreatment visual acuity, and a full clinical eye examination was also done.

OBJECTIVE: An attempt has been made to evaluate transient anterior chamber haemorrhage after canaloplasty.
METHOD: In the period from November 2008 to October 2009 a total of 21 eyes in 17 patients underwent canaloplasty for primary open angle glaucoma in our clinic. At the end of surgery all eyes left the surgical table with an intraocular pressure (IOP) of 5 - 10 mmHg and a deep anterior chamber without any bleeding.
RESULTS: The IOP on day 1 after surgery was 9.6 mmHg in average. By that time 15 of 21 eyes showed anterior chamber haemorrhage with a hyphaema between 0.5 - 2 mm in height. E

AIMS/BACKGROUND: Simultaneous bilateral extracapsular cataract extraction (SBCE) is not routinely performed in the developed world. This study investigated the safety and efficacy of this procedure as performed in the UK.
METHODS: A review of 319 consecutive patients (638 eyes) who underwent SBCE with posterior chamber intraocular lens implantation is presented.

SIGNIFICANCE: As the prevalence of post-laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) patients rises, recognition of possible traumatic complications and their management in this population becomes increasingly relevant.
