In this study, we describe an Enterobacter ludwigii clinical isolate that is resistant to both carbapenems and colistin in South Korea. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing revealed that E. ludwigii CRE2104-31 was non-susceptible to all tested antibiotics except fosfomycin. Whole genome sequencing identified a 323-kbp IncHI2 plasmid, pCRE2104-31a, that was co-harbouring mobile colistin resistance (mcr)-9.1 and blaIMP-1. In comparison with other full plasmids, pCRE2104-31a exhibited the closest similarity to a plasmid from the Klebsiella pneumoniae strain CNR48 from France, with 19.9% query cov

OBJECTIVES: Klebsiella michiganensis is an emerging pathogen. Like Klebsiella pneumoniae, this species is able to acquire antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) via mobile genetic elements. In this context, K. michiganensis isolates producing carbapenemases of KPC, NDM, IMP and OXA-48-like types have already been reported. Here we characterised a strain (BD-50-Km) isolated from a rectal swab of a Turkish patient hospitalised in Switzerland.
METHODS: Species identification was initially performed using MALDI-TOF/MS. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing was done by the microdilution method. Whole-g

Multi-drug resistant (MDR) non-typhoidal Salmonella (NTS) is a public health concern globally. This study reports the phenotypic and genotypic antimicrobial resistance (AMR) profiles of NTS isolates from bovine lymph nodes (n = 48) and ground beef (n = 29). Furthermore, we compared genotypic AMR data of our isolates with those of publicly available NTS genomes from Mexico (n = 2400). The probability of finding MDR isolates was higher in ground beef than in lymph nodes:χ2 = 12.0, P = 0.0005. The most common resistant phenotypes involved tetracycline (40.3%), carbenicillin (26.0%), amoxicillin-c

BACKGROUND: OXA-2 is a class D β-lactamase that confers resistance to penicillins, as well as narrow-spectrum cephalosporins. OXA-2 was recently reported to also possess carbapenem-hydrolysing activity. Here, we describe a KPC-2-encoding Klebsiella pneumoniae isolate that demonstrated reduced susceptibility to ceftazidime and ertapenem due to production of OXA-2.
OBJECTIVES: To elucidate the role of OXA-2 production in reduced ceftazidime and ertapenem susceptibility in a K. pneumoniae ST258 clinical isolate.
METHODS: MICs were determined by the agar dilution method. WGS was conducted to ide

BACKGROUND: Antibiotic resistance is increasingly complicating the management of urinary tract infection. We investigated the extent to which a group of Escherichia coli called clonal group A (CGA), which is associated with resistance to trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMZ), accounted for TMP-SMZ resistance among a prospectively collected set of uropathogenic and rectal E. coli isolates from a university population in Michigan.
METHODS: Resistant and susceptible uropathogenic E. coli isolates (45 each) and 79 randomly selected rectal E. coli isolates were evaluated for CGA status by use of

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistance is a growing global health threat, and extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing Enterobacterales exemplify a critical challenge. Because these organisms circulate across human, animal, food, and environmental reservoirs, a One Health perspective is essential for understanding their epidemiology. However, comprehensive regional syntheses remain limited in North Africa.
METHODS: This systematic review and meta-analysis synthesized evidence from 182 studies published between 2000 and 2024 on ESBL-producing Enterobacterales across North Africa within a One Heal

Spread of biosolids-borne antibiotic resistance is a growing public and environmental health concern. Herein, we conducted incubation experiments involving biosolids, which are byproducts of sewage treatment processes, and biosolids-amended soil. Quantitative reverse transcription-PCR (RT-qPCR) was employed to assess responses of select antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and mobile elements to environmentally relevant concentrations of two biosolids-borne antibiotics, azithromycin (AZ) and ciprofloxacin (CIP). Additionally, we examined sequence distribution of gyrA (encoding DNA gyrase; site o

There is limited information on the comparative genomic diversity of antibiotic-resistant Escherichia coli from wastewater. We sought to characterize environmental E. coli isolates belonging to various pathotypes obtained from a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) and its receiving waters using whole-genome sequencing (WGS) and an array of bioinformatics tools to elucidate the resistomes, virulomes, mobilomes, clonality, and phylogenies. Twelve multidrug-resistant (MDR) diarrheagenic E. coli isolates were obtained from the final effluent of a WWTP, and the receiving river upstream and downstream

The natural aquatic environment is a significant contributor to the development and circulation of clinically significant antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). The potential for the aquatic environment to act as a reservoir for ARG accumulation in areas receiving anthropogenic contamination has been thoroughly researched. However, the emergence of novel ARGs in the absence of external influences, as well as the capacity of environmental bacteria to disseminate ARGs via mobile genetic elements remain relatively unchallenged. In order to address these knowledge gaps, this scoping literature review

BACKGROUND: Hospital intensive care units (ICUs) are known reservoirs of multidrug resistant nosocomial bacteria. Targeted environmental monitoring of these organisms in health care facilities can strengthen infection control procedures. A routine surveillance of extended spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) producers in a large Australian veterinary teaching hospital detected the opportunistic pathogen Enterobacter hormaechei in a hand washing sink of the ICU. The organism persisted for several weeks, despite two disinfection attempts. Four isolates were characterized in this study.

Salmonella enterica serovar Gallinarum is a nonmotile host-adapted Salmonella that causes fowl typhoid (FT), and an outbreak of FT is characterized by anorexia, greenish-yellow diarrhea, paleness, and sudden death with high mortality in poultry. To control and treat FT in commercial chickens, fluoroquinolones are widely used in Korea. This study aimed to investigate the genetic characteristics of fluoroquinolone-resistant Salmonella Gallinarum isolates from 2014-18 from chicken in Korea. A total of 35 ciprofloxacin (CIP)-resistant Salmonella Gallinarum was tested, and 22 (62.9%) isolates were
