Factor structure and psychometric properties of the Italian version of the fear of missing out scale in emerging adults and adolescents.

Fear of missing out (FoMO) has been linked to problematic social media use and negative health outcomes among adolescents and emerging adults. The 10-item Fear of Missing Out Scale (FoMO) is the most used instrument to measure FoMO levels and, for this reason, it seems relevant to evaluate its psychometric properties across various cultures. In Study 1, exploratory factor analysis was conducted on the scale items using a sample of 436 college students [F = 51.1%; M (SD) = 22.13 (2.78) years old]. In Study 2, confirmatory factor analysis was conducted in order to determine whether the results o

Gender differences in use and expectancies of e-cigarettes: Online survey results.

INTRODUCTION: Given the rapid increase in e-cigarette use, it is important to understand factors that may contribute to their initiation and maintenance. Because gender differences in tobacco use, product preferences, and expectancies are well established, similar gender differences may exist with e-cigarettes. The aim of this study was to identify gender differences among e-cigarette users in patterns of use, reasons for initiation and maintenance, and outcome expectancies regarding e-cigarettes. METHODS: Participants (N=1815) completed an online survey from August through November, 2013. We

Impulse Control Disorders with Short-term Use of Cabergoline in Macroprolactinomas: A Prospective Study with a Brief Review of Literature.

Impulse control disorders (ICDs) are less-emphasized adverse effects of dopamine agonists. Evidence on prevalence and predictors of ICDs in patients with prolactinomas is limited and confined chiefly to cross-sectional studies. This was a prospective study performed to investigate ICDs in treatment-naïve patients with macroprolactinomas (n = 15) using cabergoline (Group I), compared to consecutive patients of nonfunctioning pituitary macroadenomas (n = 15) (Group II). Clinical, biochemical, radiological parameters and psychiatric comorbidities were evaluated at baseline. ICD was assessed by Mi

Parental psychological control and problematic smartphone use in Chinese early adolescents: shyness as a mediator and teacher-student relationship as a moderator.

Problematic smartphone use (PSU) has become an increasingly prominent concern among early adolescents. Although prior research has consistently linked parental psychological control (PPC) to adolescents’ problematic smartphone use, less is known about how family, school, and individual factors jointly relate to PSU during early adolescence. Guided by the Interactional Theory of Childhood Problematic Media Use (IT-CPU), this study examined the associations among PPC, teacher–student relationship (TSR), shyness, and PSU in a sample of 1,176 early adolescents from Shandong Province, China. Partic

Interpretable machine learning for identifying co-occurring internet addiction and maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation in older adults: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Internet addiction and maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation may co-occur in later life, yet evidence-based approaches for identifying this co-occurrence remain limited. This study developed and interpreted a machine learning classifier to distinguish community-dwelling older adults with versus without current co-occurrence. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 1,471 adults aged 60 years or older in China. Candidate predictors included demographic characteristics, general well-being, family functioning, and social support. METHODS: After preprocessing, correlation-based

A multi-scale, circuit-to-gene signature of approach-bias modification in internet gaming disorder.

BACKGROUND: Approach-bias modification (ApBM) is a cognitive training intervention with potential therapeutic value for internet gaming disorder (IGD). However, its clinical efficacy and the underlying neural mechanisms remain to be systematically investigated. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of ApBM for IGD and to identify the associated multi-scale neurobiological signatures, from brain connectivity to gene expression. METHODS: We conducted a randomized controlled trial involving individuals with IGD assigned to either an ApBM (N = 30) or a control group (N = 27). Resting-sta

Examining stable and dynamic factors associated with daily problematic mobile phone use: Evidence from a 14-day diary study using machine learning and network analysis.

This study used machine learning with SHAP to identify key predictors of daily problematic mobile phone use (PMPU), and then applied network analysis to examine the associations between these selected key factors and PMPU across between-person, within-day, and across-day levels. A total of 279 undergraduate students in China completed a baseline assessment and a 14-day daily diary investigation. The results showed that the Random Forest model achieved meaningful out-of-sample prediction of next-day PMPU. SHAP analysis indicated that day-level factors contributed most to prediction (e.g., daily

Exploring artificial intelligence (AI) Chatbot usage behaviors and their association with mental health outcomes in Chinese university students.

Technology dependence has long been a critical public health issue, especially among young people. With the development of AI chatbots, many individuals are integrating these tools into their daily lives. However, we have limited knowledge about the issues related to AI chatbot usage and dependence. Therefore, we conducted a cross-sectional survey to investigate AI chatbot usage behaviors and their association with mental health outcomes among Chinese university students. A total of 1004 students who met the inclusion criteria were included in the analysis. Our survey revealed that 45.8 % of s

The effect of childhood environmental unpredictability on problematic gaming among Chinese college students: a moderated mediation model.

BACKGROUND: Childhood environmental unpredictability (CEU) is recognized as a contributing factor to the maintenance and development of problematic gaming (PG) in adulthood by undermining individuals' psychological well-being. According to the cognitive vulnerability-stress model, cognitive schemas, such as unpredictability beliefs, may moderate the indirect pathway of CEU on PG via psychological distress. However, direct empirical evidence remains limited. METHODS: Using cross-sectional design and convenience sampling, a total of 1,255 Chinese college students aged 17 to 28 years (54.50% fem

Sleep quality, internet addiction and depressive symptoms among undergraduate students in Nepal.

BACKGROUND: Evidence on the burden of depression, internet addiction and poor sleep quality in undergraduate students from Nepal is virtually non-existent. While the interaction between sleep quality, internet addiction and depressive symptoms is frequently assessed in studies, it is not well explored if sleep quality or internet addiction statistically mediates the association between the other two variables. METHODS: We enrolled 984 students from 27 undergraduate campuses of Chitwan and Kathmandu, Nepal. We assessed sleep quality, internet addiction and depressive symptoms in these students
