Diving into the Digital Landscape: Assessing the Quality of Online Information on Neonatal Jaundice for Parents.

BACKGROUND: Hyperbilirubinemia is a common condition in newborns. While mild cases of jaundice are common and typically resolve spontaneously, severe hyperbilirubinemia can lead to serious neurologic complications if left untreated. With the constant adaptation of guidelines, clinical management has significantly improved, and treatment has become routine for pediatricians. However, for parents of affected children, managing the condition is not routine. In today's digital age, parents often seek additional information by accessing a wide range of medical resources on the internet. While this

Enhancing surgical decision-making in NEC with ResNet18: a deep learning approach to predict the need for surgery through x-ray image analysis.

BACKGROUND: Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a severe neonatal intestinal disease, often occurring in preterm infants following the administration of hyperosmolar formula. It is one of the leading causes of neonatal mortality in the NICU, and currently, there are no clear standards for surgical intervention, which typically depends on the joint discretion of surgeons and neonatologists. In recent years, deep learning has been extensively applied in areas such as image segmentation, fracture and pneumonia classification, drug development, and pathological diagnosis. OBJECTIVE: Investigating

Pregnancy of women with type 1 diabetes mellitus - the effect of preconception care on perinatal results. Ten years of experience.

INTRODUCTION: Despite the ever-improving medical care, pregnancies of women with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) are at increased risk of complications for both mother and child. Optimal compensation of diabetes before and during pregnancy is an essential protective factor reducing the risk of congenital malformations, pregnancy loss, and other complications. The pregnancy of women with T1DM should be planned, ideally at a time of optimal diabetes compensation. Target glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) values until the range of 42-48 mmol/mol should be achieved at least three months before pregnancy.

Earlier preterm birth is associated with a worse neurocognitive outcome in a rabbit model.

BACKGROUND: Preterm birth (PTB) and particularly late preterm PTB has become a research focus for obstetricians, perinatologists, neonatologists, pediatricians and policy makers alike. Translational models are useful tools to expedite and guide clinical but presently no model exists that contextualizes the late PTB scenario. Herein we aimed to develop a rabbit model that echo's the clinical neurocognitive phenotypes of early and late PTB. METHODS: Time mated rabbit does underwent caesarean delivery at a postconceptional age (PCA) of either 28 (n = 6), 29 (n = 5), 30 (n = 4) or 31 (n = 4) days

Baseline characteristics of a nationwide cohort of pediatric patients with acute leukemias of Down syndrome.

PURPOSE: Down syndrome (DS) or trisomy 21, brings together some unique aspects from clinical pediatrics. Among the hematological disorders present in DS, by far the most important is the predisposition for developing acute leukemia. Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) of DS has a preleukemic state with the onset in the neonatal period, rarely symptomatic but with the presence of blasts in peripheral blood smear and apparently a spontaneous remission. The unique tumor profile of DS underlines the importance of chromosome 21 in hematopoiesis and it can help understanding leukemogenesis in general. The

N-BiPAP vs n-CPAP in term neonate with respiratory distress syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Non-invasive respiratory ventilation has greatly improved the evolution of respiratory distress in neonates, especially for preterm infants, but few studies have investigated the use of non-invasive ventilation (NIV) in term infants. It is useful for neonatologists and nurses to identify the optimal ventilation strategy in terms of effectiveness for this group of newborns. The aim of our study was to investigate what type of respiratory support between nasal Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (nCPAP) or nasal Biphasic Positive Airway Pressure (nBiPAP) is more effective in term neo

[Paracetamol (acetaminophen) use in neonatology: a (re)appreciation of an old drug].

In neonates, paracetamol is mainly used for its analgesic action. This drug is actually preferred by neonatologists because of its broad therapeutic index. Recently, it has been demonstrated that paracetamol is also an anti-cyclooxygenase (COX) medication through its inhibitory action on the peroxidase arm of central and peripheral COX (Boutaud et al., 2002; Toussaint et al., 2010; Graham et al., 2013; Hinz et al., 2008; Hinz and Brune, 2011). As such, this drug interferes with the synthesis of prostaglandins. This inhibition of peroxidase is, however, limited to a low concentration of arachid

Consensus expert recommendations for the diagnosis and management of autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease: report of an international conference.

Autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease (ARPKD; MIM 263200) is a severe, typically early onset form of cystic disease that primarily involves the kidneys and biliary tract. Phenotypic expression and age at presentation can be quite variable. The incidence of ARPKD is 1 in 20,000 live births, and its pleotropic manifestations are potentially life-threatening. Optimal care requires proper surveillance to limit morbidity and mortality, knowledgeable approaches to diagnosis and treatment, and informed strategies to optimize quality of life. Clinical management therefore is ideally directed b

Autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease: the prototype of the hepato-renal fibrocystic diseases.

Autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease (ARPKD) is a severe, typically early onset form of renal cystic disease. The care of ARPKD patients has traditionally been the purview of pediatric nephrologists for management of systemic hypertension and progressive renal insufficiency. However, the disease has multisystem manifestations and a comprehensive care strategy frequently requires a multidisciplinary team. In severely affected infants, the diagnosis often is first suspected by obstetricians when enlarged, echogenic kidneys and oligohydramnios are detected on prenatal ultrasounds. Neonat
