OBJECTIVE: To determine whether the Bart's modified lateral position is safe and effective for achieving simultaneous anterograde and retrograde access in complex upper urinary tract pathologic features.
METHODS: From November 2006 to September 2010, 45 procedures were performed, with the patients in the modified lateral position. The indication for these procedures was the presence of complex unilateral upper urinary tract pathologic features. The patients with muscular and/or skeletal abnormalities were excluded. All procedures were performed using simultaneous anterograde and retrograde ac

OBJECTIVES: Percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) has historically been performed with the patient in the prone position, which has inherent drawbacks. Supine PCNL has numerous benefits in terms of safety, efficacy, and versatility and is comparable with respect to vascular and bowel injury. This study was intended to prove that PCNL with the patient in the supine position is an alternative method of doing PCNL along with comprehensive technique.
METHODS: A total of 184 patients with 191 renal units underwent tubeless supine PCNL from 2005 to May 2007. Their mean age was 32 years and mean weigh

BACKGROUND: The urinary tract calculi in children is a very unfrequent problem in the pediatric age group. Endourology plays a major role in pediatric surgery. We reported our experience in endoscopic management of pediatric calculi.
METHODS: Eighteen children (age range: 2 year-19 years) underwent endourology procedures for extraction of urinary tract lithiasis in the period from 1992 until 2006. We reviewed retrospectively the following features: calculi size, location, procedures, surgical complications, recurrent, results and time of follow-up.
RESULTS: Twenty-one endourolgy procedures w

OBJECTIVES: In September 2024, Hurricane Helene caused extensive infrastructure damage in the United States, including severe disruption to a major Baxter sterile irrigation fluid manufacturing facility in North Carolina, leading to a nationwide shortage of sterile irrigation fluids used in surgical procedures. The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of the nationwide sterile irrigation fluid shortage on urologic practice across the United States (U.S.).
METHODS: A descriptive, cross-sectional Research Electronic Data Capture (REDCap) survey was distributed to U.S. urologists.

Background: Ureteric small bowel fistulas are rare entities, with limited reports in the literature. These pathological connections between the ureter and small bowel can lead to recurrent upper urinary tract infections and pose significant diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. The primary cause of ureteric small bowel fistula formation is iatrogenic intervention, such as percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) or abdominal surgery involving tissue resection. However, they can also arise spontaneously due to local chronic inflammation and infection. Given their rarity, there is no standardised ma

BACKGROUND/AIM: Carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (CR-KP) infections encountered in urology patients differentiate from infections caused by other factors, both in respect to prophylaxis and treatment stage, and require a special approach. We aimed to analyse the predisposing factors and the antibiotherapies for CR-KP infection outbreak in a tertiary urology clinic.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: There were 75 patients in the CR-KP positive group (Group I) and 146 patients in the CR-KP negative group (Group II). Analysis of the predisposing factors for CR-KP infection and comparison of the r

OBJECTIVE: While routine renal imaging following ureteroscopy for urinary calculi has been recommended to screen for asymptomatic "silent" obstruction, the rate of silent obstruction following percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) remains poorly defined, and no consensus recommendations exist on routine postoperative imaging. At our institution, we sought to assess the incidence of silent hydronephrosis (SH), as a screen for obstruction, following PCNL.
METHODS: The records of all 162 patients who met study inclusion criteria were reviewed. Of this group, 112 patients presented for their schedu

INTRODUCTION: Ureteral strictures are a significant cause of morbidity and mortality, resulting in potential kidney damage requiring several surgical procedures. Non-malignant causes include radiation, trauma from calculi impaction, pelvic surgery, or ureteroscopy (URS). We identified risk factors in our patients with ureteral strictures and the success of their treatment outcomes.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review of 25 patients with 29 ureteral strictures was performed to determine the success of their treatment.
RESULTS: Twenty-five (25) patients with 29 benign ureteral strictures wer

PURPOSE: Pediatric urolithiasis has been treated with shock wave lithotripsy, ureteroscopy and percutaneous nephrolithotomy with high success rates during short-term followup. We studied our success rate and modifiable risk factors in patients with at least 5 years of followup postoperatively.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective chart review was performed for patients younger than 18 years who underwent upper tract stone surgery between 1999 and 2007, were stone-free afterward and had at least 5 years of followup. Recurrence rate, and anatomical and metabolic abnormalities were assessed.

INTRODUCTION: The surgical management of nephrolithiasis in Australia has changed markedly over the past three decades. Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (SWL), once the dominant modality, has been progressively supplanted by advances in ureteroscopy (URS), flexible pyeloscopy and percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL). This study aimed to characterise Australian trends in stone surgery between 1994 and 2024, examining changes in the relative utilisation of SWL, endoscopic, PCNL and non-endoscopic procedures, contextualised against population growth.
METHODS: Annual national counts were extr

INTRODUCTION: Type and screen testing (T&S) is routinely performed preoperatively for many endoscopic procedures, despite low transfusion rates. While important, T&S can be costly, unnecessary, and burdensome for patients to obtain in a short timeframe due to expiry. We aimed to assess and reduce unnecessary T&S in a safe and collaborative manner through a Transfusion Dashboard. We assessed the effect of reduced testing on patient safety, cost, and the environment.
METHODS: This quality improvement study used the Transfusion Dashboard, a web-based, institutional platform tracking blood transf
