The role of compounded mouthwash with or without acyclovir in managing chemotherapy-induced oral mucositis in cancer patients: a randomized controlled trial.

BackgroundChemotherapy-induced oral mucositis (CIOM) is a prevalent and debilitating condition observed in cancer patients, especially in those suffering from hematologic malignancies. The present study assessed the efficacy of a compounded mouthwash, both with and without the addition of acyclovir, in the management of CIOM. Although various treatment options exist for this condition, their effectiveness remains limited, underscoring the necessity for innovative approaches to the formulation of compounded mouthwashes for improved management of CIOM.MethodsA prospective, double-blind, randomiz

Recombinant Human Granulocyte-Macrophage Colony-Stimulating Factor (rhu GM-CSF) as Adjuvant Therapy for Invasive Fungal Diseases.

BackgroundSargramostim (yeast-derived, glycosylated recombinant human granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor [rhu GM-CSF]) augments innate and adaptive immune responses and accelerates hematopoietic recovery of chemotherapy-induced neutropenia. However, considerably less is known about its efficacy as adjunctive immunotherapy against invasive fungal diseases (IFDs).MethodsThe clinical courses of 15 patients with pediatric malignancies and IFDs treated adjunctively with sargramostim at a single institution were analyzed in a retrospective cohort review. Further, a systematic review of

Radiation-Induced Oral Mucositis.

Radiation-induced oral mucositis (RIOM) is a major dose-limiting toxicity in head and neck cancer patients. It is a normal tissue injury caused by radiation/radiotherapy (RT), which has marked adverse effects on patient quality of life and cancer therapy continuity. It is a challenge for radiation oncologists since it leads to cancer therapy interruption, poor local tumor control, and changes in dose fractionation. RIOM occurs in 100% of altered fractionation radiotherapy head and neck cancer patients. In the United Sates, its economic cost was estimated to reach 17,000.00 USD per patient with

Acute Generalized Exanthematous Pustulosis: Clinical Features, Differential Diagnosis, and Management.

Acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis (AGEP) is a rare, acute, severe cutaneous adverse reaction mainly attributed to drugs, although other triggers, including infections, vaccinations, ingestion of various substances, and spider bites, have also been described. AGEP is characterized by the development of edema and erythema followed by the eruption of multiple punctate, non-follicular, sterile pustules and subsequent desquamation. AGEP typically has a rapid onset and prompt resolution within a few weeks. The differential diagnoses for AGEP are broad and include infectious, inflammatory, a

Unmasking TRALI: a case report of multiple myeloma and transfusion-associated event.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Transfusion-related acute lung injury (TRALI) is a relatively rare but severe respiratory complication that can occur following the transfusion of blood products. Despite its infrequent occurrence, TRALI is a leading cause of transfusion-related mortality, underscoring the need for rapid diagnosis and appropriate management. However, diagnosis remains challenging due to its clinical overlap with other causes of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). CASE PRESENTATION: This report describes the case of a 57-year-old woman with multiple myeloma (MM) who develop

Amyloidosis: A story of how inframammary erosions eclipsed inconspicuous periorbital ecchymoses.

Systemic amyloidosis is a rare disease that can be rapidly progressive due to widespread organ involvement. There are well-described renal, cardiac, pulmonary, neurological, and dermatologic findings. Here, we outline one patient's experience with the condition from presentation to making the diagnosis. She presented with pathognomonic dermatologic findings including pinch purpura and ecchymoses found in the skin folds.

Oral cryotherapy by Kangfuxin for prophylaxis of oral mucositis in patients undergoing autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.

Oral mucositis is a common complication in patients undergoing autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (auto-HSCT), and currently, there is no universally effective treatment. This study aims to evaluate the preventive and delaying effects of oral cryotherapy using Kangfuxin (KFX) on oral mucositis in auto-HSCT patients. A total of 86 patients, treated between January 2020 and August 2023, were randomly assigned into 2 groups: the control group (40 cases) received cryotherapy using frozen physiological saline ice cubes, and the experimental group (46 cases) received KFX ice cubes. Novel Treatments for Patients With Relapsed/Refractory Multiple Myeloma.

Therapeutic options for patients with multiple myeloma have multiplied in the past decade. However, multiple myeloma remains an incurable disease, and relapsed/refractory myeloma is characterized by genetic and cytogenetic alterations that drive resistance and result in progressively shorter durations of remission to each subsequent therapy. At JADPRO Live 2022, presenters discussed the multifactorial process for choosing the right therapy for a particular patient and strategies to manage unique treatment complications associated with novel treatment modalities used for patients with relapsed/

Oral complications and management strategies for patients undergoing cancer therapy.

With cancer survival rate climbing up over the past three decades, quality of life for cancer patients has become an issue of major concern. Oral health plays an important part in one's overall quality of life. However, oral health status can be severely hampered by side effects of cancer therapies including surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Moreover, prevention and treatment of these complications are often overlooked in clinical practice. The present paper aims at drawing health care professionals' attention to oral complications associated wit

Oral manifestations and dental management in patients undergoing CAR-T cell therapy: a retrospective observational study.

Chimeric antigen receptor T-cell (CAR-T) therapy has emerged as a highly effective treatment for refractory and relapsed hematologic malignancies. Despite its clinical benefits, CAR-T therapy is associated with a unique toxicity profile, including cytokine release syndrome (CRS), immune effector cell-associated neurotoxicity syndrome (ICANS), and prolonged immunosuppression. Oral complications in this population remain underreported. This retrospective case series was aimed at describing oral manifestations and dental management in patients undergoing CAR-T therapy at a tertiary referral cente

Eficacy of Cryotherapy in the Prevention of Oral Mucosistis in Adult Patients with Chemotherapy.

Oral mucositis (OM) is a common side effect of cancer therapies. It causes ulcerative, painful lesions in the oral cavity that can provoke malnutrition, increased risk of infection, longer hospital stays, and seriously affect the quality of life. Cooling the mucosa with oral cryotherapy (OC) during and/or after chemotherapy is the most accessible and tolerable intervention available. The aim of this study is to define the efficacy of OC for preventing OM induced by chemotherapy/radiotherapy in adult patients with cancer. Secondary endpoints include associated problems as pain. A systematic sea

Oral toxicity produced by chemotherapy: A systematic review.

IntroductionAntineoplastic chemotherapy remains one of the most widely used management strategies in cancer, either alone or in combination with other types of treatment. The main inconvenience of chemotherapy is its lack of selectivity, since it acts upon both tumor cells and rapidly multiplying normal cells such as bone marrow cells, hair follicle cells and oral and gastrointestinal mucosal cells.Material and methodAn exhaustive search was made of the main oral toxic effects of chemotherapy in the PubMed-Medline, Cochrane Library and Scopus databases. A total of 1293 articles were identified

Oral mucosal injury caused by mammalian target of rapamycin inhibitors: emerging perspectives on pathobiology and impact on clinical practice.

In recent years oral mucosal injury has been increasingly recognized as an important toxicity associated with mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) inhibitors, including in patients with breast cancer who are receiving everolimus. This review addresses the state-of-the-science regarding mTOR inhibitor-associated stomatitis (mIAS), and delineates its clinical characteristics and management. Given the clinically impactful pain associated with mIAS, this review also specifically highlights new research focusing on the study of the molecular basis of pain. The incidence of mIAS varies widely (2-78%
